This is a prelude to something I've had planned for quite some time, but never gotten around to finishing it. I'm needing people to post the first thing they made when mapping. For most people this would be a box map, unfinished level geometry, your own version of the HEK Tutorial map, etc. I'm looking for good examples of showing how far people have come along over the past four or five years.
Only post the first thing you've made in the form of images or a link to halomaps. Dont waste my time posting newer stuff.
Lag gave it to me as a test. I was joking and didn't actually know how to do much at all in photoshop, so this was all done with mainly dodge and burn, the bucket and a 1 pixel brush.
This was my map that was supposed to be based off of the battle room in Ender's Game. I tried to make it weightless- but it just ended up being a very confusing, very dark, matrix creek style map with super jump on. The horizontal jump across the map were pretty epic though. I never got the stun guns the work either...

Gross.
good thing we were desperate enough to let you in :p.
Now for all the people who whine about the harsh criticism on this site, I'd write that up as a perfect example of how said criticism can turn someones work around.

Unfortunatly this is the oldest model I have, from back in 06. I used to have renders of a really shitty model I made back in 05 of what I called a pistol, but I lost those pictures after a hard drive failure. I hope this is bad enough for the thread.

Lol, I mentioned this when I was talking to you on msn. I still have it on my pc from when you showed me. And tbh, back then you thought it was the most amazing thing ever, and so did I. I still think for the knowledge and the way you did it back then, you did a fucking good job mr. ;)

Re: Post the first thing you made.
Not really my first model... My first model was made in a program called Anim8or... but yeah, this was my first serious attempt at a map:
Well, I did make a few simple models, but I don't really have any pictures of them, and I don't have the files anymore, and I haven't really improved much, so yeah... I'm more of a drawing-type person, and since I haven't posted any of my stuff yet (maybe I should do that, eh?), you wouldn't have anything to compare to.
WOL, I'm sure it's first ANYTHING ever related to mapping for Halo, Source, Cryengine, or Unreal.
I can't find my CD o' Betas™ that has my first map ever for Halo on it, but it was just a flat asphalt plane with a concrete wall built around it, and the shaders had no bump maps or anything on them. The "bases" were a bunch of large human barricades with one of each vehicle right "outside" of them. Oh, and in typical mapping nub fashion, I laid down actual weapons instead of netgame equipment. Weapons disappeared after 30 seconds and never respawned. I still can't do much better than that on my own; all I can do is work with existing geometry.
As for a weapon, I tried making a Desert Eagle. End result? Two extruded splines that made up blocks I was ashamed to call the slide and grip. :downs:

First of almost everything from me (spoiler tagged for long post):
Those where my first of everything :)
Oddly enough, I don't think I have ever released anything to the public, most of my maps/tags stayed in my HD and where lost (including the tiny bronco, highwind, humvee, the Hardy Daytona [That bike that Cloud drives during that moto chase], a Mako reactor map, a few pistols and riffles, and some other stuff I can't remember). There is one secret map that was released that I told someone else to take the whole credit for it, but it wasn't that good anyways.

Omega, Your first model actually looks kinda cool, even though its just a bunch of extrudes. And those marines+Chief lifting the flag looks awesome.

Re: Post the first thing you made.
Well, I was looking for a stair way or bridge I could use in my first map, Chewy Gumball's tutorial gave me the idea of what the bridge should look like.
Also, the only things I ever made for Halo were PC mods, usually in the interest of making the weapon set as different from stock Halo as humanly possible. I didn't ever do anything groundbreaking, but everybody who tried my mods said they were fun.
As for Source, I've made a couple of box maps for Half-Life 2 but haven't had the patience to fully learn Hammer.
You do NOT want to see my first BSP. I'll try to find it, though.

Re: Post the first thing you made.
hmm... first model I don't really remember, they were all milkshape-remodels for halo pc... I can't really recall the first model I ever made that used edit mesh or edit poly.
As for my first map that I got ingame, it was a plane, with a small hill in the middle, with the tutorial ground bitmap placed on it.
Where I went from there to be honest I don't fully remember. There were some other projects, with not much more improvement... I actually might MIGHT be able to find a drawing/sketch of the first layout/map idea I ever came up with and wanted to make. It was like, a big canyon, about as tall as the ones from assault on the control room, but desert themed, with a large forerunner structure in the middle, that spanned from the canyon floor to the top. It was actually really weird now that I think about it... After that I was obsessed with a city themed map, but never really succeeded in making one.
I jumped from idea to idea, mostly just to practice my modeling because I was pretty aware most of my models sucked ass... First ever released map was a beta of some stupid map that took place on a very poorly modeled highway, surrounded by a very poorly modeled city, and poorly made environment lol, theres the link lol.. the pictures make no sense http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=1461 and the highway texture was clearly made using a screen shot from halo 2 trailers.
I've actually never made a WIP thread for anything simply because I realize that I very rarely ever stick to one project, and I don't want to post pictures of something when it will probably never be released.

If you guys have some examples of some other people's first work who have been in the community since the early GBX days, can you post it please?

Re: Post the first thing you made.
My first anything for Halo was Delta Station.
First modding ever was some crappy stuff for DF2: Jedi Knight, of which I have no screenshots.
Actually, now that I think back, my first modification to anything ever was for a racing game called Re-Volt. I reskinned one of the models to look like the '93 Mercury my family owned at the time, but it was a simple job done in MS paint.
fy_ohgod is pretty much the best map ever as you can see

Yay, thanks. Too bad I didn't actualy design the thing, credit for that goes to raven software.
Speaking of which, read the comments on filefront there, many laughs will be had.
E: I have no idea how to make a gif from a max animation or else i'd post my first animations ever too.

First map I ever made ever. I could probably do much better now, but seeing as both Gmax and 3ds Max hate me, I won't be modeling any time in the near future. I also made an Assault Carbine, but it just ended up being a box with extrudes and connections of primitives. It looked cool in first person though.
I just spent an hour searching the internetz trying to find pictures of Precipice. :P Looks like the google caching of the epgforums has finally disappeared, and imageshack seems to have either erased or hidden my old album so far in that I cannot find it. D: It was massive, heavily overpolied, and would have been impossible to get ingame. And I spent a year on it. There's a lesson here, kids. :D

Re: Post the first thing you made.
I deleted the first map I got into sapien - it was a simple figure 8 interior - but here's the one and only map I uploaded. Who doesn't love a BG mod? :D http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=3252
It was fun, portalling for rain vertically, and adding underground tunnels from the bases to a scaled up put-put room in between, with vehicle teleports to the edges of the map. And climbable trees, welded to the bsp. Interesting portalling expierience.

Some remote searching via my younger brother, and I found the actual models on my home computer.
Screenies as soon as I figure out how to get gmax from biting my head off.

A closer look at the midcanyon base entrance.
That odd square above the base? Secret entrance FTW. =D
