Sorry if the thread title is too startling for the context. Now, I'm not a hardcore gamer, and I've never claimed to be. But today I was reading a webcomic I've frequented for many years, and saw something that made even me cringe. Ladies and gentlemen:
Because I'm a deep lover of sociology, I wanted to know what the more experienced and loving gamers of the world think about this. Some say they feel exploited. Some say they feel things like this further the industry. I neglected to include a poll, because I think this is something that can't be adaquetly expressed through a few choice options. Post your opinions if ya got 'em.

Re: The End of Times for Gamers?
Uhh...wow. That has to be the most retarded thing i've ever seen. Even back when they had that Forza Challenge thing on Speed channel or whatever it was on, they went too far with it. How do you even get in those things? Everytime I see the people in those, I wonder how the hell they stumbled upon this. They usually aren't the best, and they most likely don't live for whatever they do. It's pethetic.

Re: The End of Times for Gamers?
Yes, the current trend is turning series with great games like CoD into franchises that suck (Treyarch). Developers use to know when it was time to let something die, but now great series are turning to shit, and they aren't being permitted to rest in peace. Instead publishers tell the devs to stick a T-Virus in the series and continue to shit out games. Resident Evil, Call of Duty, Mario, Grand Theft Auto, and many other series just need to be let to rest.
Banjo-Kazooie was a good example of an industry turned corrupt. Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie: GoodAwesomeMy favorite two games ever. Nuts and Bolts: Crap. I mean it wasn't even a true BK game. They just stuck the characters in there.

THE GAME
So basically they get a bunch of randoms who like teh vidya, stick them in a house together and make them compete? With video games?
WHAT A TWIST, SURELY THIS SHALL ROCK TELEVISION TO IT'S CORE
The thing that shits me about how gameing is presented on TV is that it seems to be dumbed down for the 12 yr old market. Infact the game related media in general (I've never read a bigger rag than a console specific gaming magazine, 360 or PS3). Even worse, people (adults) still buy/watch it in droves, and will defend it to the grave (years of being social outcasts must have made them clingier then the superglue between my middle and ring fingers).
And it's on SciFi??

Re: The End of Times for Gamers?
We start with a community that is small, but functional. Even in small numbers, they are able to do great things, some even making a place in history. Then, the group's abilities are discovered, and anyone who wants a cut of it will waltz in, attempt to take part, and, whether they succeed or not, will pretend to be the original group. Of course, most of these new people will fail, and be a horrid mutation of what the original was. However, because it is now the majority, the system is basically forced to work for them, even if it is considered harmful. Sound familiar?
MOTHER, FUCKING, CANCER.
They can take this fabled "hardcore" bullshit. That's fine with me. Instead, I'll continue to be the real gamer. To me, that's really the best term left. These casuals in disguise who've only been playing games since Halo (2, usually) can be "hardcore" or whatever, and I will be the real gamer in the classic poorly lit room who's been playing games since the end of the 8-bit era.

Not interested, and I expect many will not watch this. It's a niche market, but it's also a niche that tends not to like lowest common denominator stuff like reality TV.
Also, to be frank, video games are usually boring unless you're the one playing it. I wouldn't watch TV to watch someone play a game, no matter how many comments they throw at eachother.

The only two notable series that I think should have ended a LONG time ago (preferably after each made 3 games), are Spyro the Dragon, and Crash Bandicoot.

Choose your next words carefully. CoD3 and 5 were absolutely awful and anyone who disagrees is as much a gamer as I am a world logsplitting champion.
GTAIV was good, but the series is starting to drag on. There are only so many cultural backgrounds you can give a character before it gets old. CoD should be continued by IW only, and they should bloody well leave WWII alone for games that do it better like BiA. RE I've never really played but even I can see they're just milking it for all it's worth, and Mario is fast running out of new things to do. What's next, Mariokart: Streets of Baghdad or something? Where you have to drive Hummvees around and not get blown up?

This a thousand times this. I loved the original Spyro games (though I was young at the time, I still think they're pretty good games.) I loved the first three, but it went downhill at what I think was the fourth one, where you had to rescue the dragonflies or some shit.

Re: The End of Times for Gamers?
I've seen it this way: gaming has always been about escaping reality, doing the normally impossible, and having fun, be them board games, video games, etc. As long as people are doing those things, I don't see where anyone has any right to say that someone is/isn't a gamer.
However, I also agree that people making a big fuss about this kind of shit is retarded. People taking games seriously is where I see a line, and I don't mean the people who ragequit because they're getting their ass kicked in an online game (think about it, wouldn't you get worked up if you failed to do ANYTHING repeatedly, no matter what you tried?), I mean these tournaments and shit, and not necessarily the players either. Televised tournaments? Reality shows? Fuck on off back to MTV and make more shitty Flavor of Love seasons, who cares?
What is wrong with the gaming industry, just like the fucking music industry, is the people who're trying to exploit gamers for their own gain.

Re: The End of Times for Gamers?
wait, so let me get this straight. you have the best of the best at halo 3, computer games (probably an rts of some sort) and classic joystick games, and you call the best all around gamers the people who play rock band? wow.
see, i dont care if you play rock band or guitar hero, thats all well and good. in my opinion, you are not a hard core gamer unless you have a basic grasp of the history, as in youve played games from the old generations, and you have played most, if not all of the genres of games. im getting really sick of these people who pick up the controller when their boyfriends leave for 30 seconds to take a piss, walk into walls in the meantime, then call themselves gamers. same with the people who just pick up a guitar hero game. i dont call that intense gaming, unless maybe they go to national competitions with it.
this though, this is just stupid. the best of the best in the world is not a rockband team. i dont know who this is supposed to target as an audience, but it doesnt make sense
E: oh lol, duh. its not supposed to.

I love how long term gamers feel the urge to classify other gamers into "hardcore" or "casual" categories, using casual as an insult and then getting all pissy when the casuals take over the media.
Like it actually matters.

nah i dont mind the tournaments and shit, it's just hte best of the best, and we have these competitions for just about anything, so why not gaming.
when they are elevated to superhuman status, reality TV shows ect and seen as idols is when alarms go off in my head.
Fuck exploitation AND commercialization. it's these i cant stand.

I don't have any problem with what people classify as 'casual' gamers, but what I do have a problem with is people who have no comprehension of or respect for the history of gaming.
