[WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
The name presents itself. I got a concept drawn out.

If you can imagine a chain-link fence to the right, with a street to the right of it, and another building wall to the left. Of course with some trash on the ground.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
I don't get what those things below the window are for.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
...May I ask what practical application using subdivisions here will have? None of the shapes are particularly interesting or requiring of it, why bother? It's pretty much all boxes and other primitives here, so it's not like you'll really get practice keeping things quads :S

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
That's part of the window sill:
I don't know why I subdivided, but it certainly looks better than no subdivision at the moment.

It does look a bit nicer on the edges though. It looks a bit more realistic.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Many of the edges there could probably benefit from being hard though. Ok, maybe subdivs would make SOME spots look nicer but it's not being used very well to that effect.
Ex : no reason for there to be an in-between from the window frames to the windows, nor the ground to the wall.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
WHERE ARE THE BLACK PEOPLE???
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
all of the new kids using subdivision dont seem to understand the proper applications for it. you dont really make a subdivision model unless youre trying to make a professional looking scene thats going to be skinned and everything, or unless youre making a game asset. you really dont make it "just because." this scene would be better off low poly, and you should probably finish the scene in low poly before subdividing it.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Your backboard is huge, I was going to be all WTF?! but then I found a picture of one like that....
http://staff.harrisonburg.k12.va.us/...tball-hoop.jpg
Do you have the supports and such on the back of it?... is your pole just straight there, or does it go up and curve?
Your whole scene is too clean modelwise too, rip a chunk out of that building, break a few windows.. put a small dent in the pole, make the hoop lopsided, put trash everywhere..... make the scene interesting.
E: add a net to that hoop haha.

This was the one based off of it, the front of the building and the hoop. I now realize looking at the shadow, that the pole curves into the hoop backboard.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
bottom right corner of that backboard is broken, do that. It's interesting. Bottom left side has a small piece missing too.
Perfect = boring. Somehow in Halo that's not the case... in Halo perfect = good for some reason... but this isn't Halo... so make it look good.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
if your gonna do subdiv, make the walls brick or something, so then there will actually be enough detail for it to be worth it. Tilt the backboard a bit like maybe one of the brackets is broken or something. make the hoop thinner, and not just a ring, and make it bent. (see llama's image).
seems like a lot a lot of the feel of the scene will rely on textures, so you'll need some faded paint, rush, cracked asphalt, etc.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Um, whats making it ghetto?
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Have you ever been to the ghetto? Courts located in "ghettos" are in tip top shape.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Um, actually, there is pretty much a set of ghetto apartments close to where I live.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Ghetto apartments isn't a ghetto. I'm talking about whole city's.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
your windows are way too over sized

I think the tutorial (still need to finish it,but from the first 15 min I've seen, it doesn't really explain the practical use of subdivide).
You use subdivide to add details to your object, this can be greatly seen in freeform character modeling. Its use is NOT to make your edges rounded for no reason. That part is only necessary when using turbosmoothing and NURBS to limit the deformation of non organic objects by the algorithm.
Watch a few subdivision modeling of heads to see the real purpose of subdivision (its purpose is not to make ur edges round...)

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Add bullet holes then it will be ghetto :realsmug:
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
why is it ghetto?
who puts a hoop 2 feet from a building?
i dont care what reference image you have the backboard is too wide. i bet that ref photo is 40-50 years old. that hoop is huge i wouldnt miss a shot on it.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
add black people in the image, instant-ghetto.
. in cate you're a mentalpatient, this is jokingly >_>)
(don't use too many or the crime rate will go up)
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
You got to have a cop car driving in circles monitoring them too
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Add a boom box and people break dancing on the side.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
You guys aren't very helpful. Just because he named it something and you guys don't agree, doesn't give you the right to shit up his thread with useless talk. (No offence to anyone.. but I like seeing pictures and crit in studio threads. :) )
Instead of having it duplicated and almost all perfect, you should remodel each set of windows with different damages/looks/ect. It looks to clean.

^Wrong.
Don't "remodel" just model one, UV it, duplicate over like you have, then cut in places and move around some verts to make them look unique.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
That's if he is planning on uving it.
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
You should always UV your stuff... even if you're not planning on texturing it. it's not like it's difficult or anything.
Plus it's newbkilla's.... he's all more than eager to texture stuff.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Not diggin' this piece.
Too clean, not high res enough, not organic enough

Organic Enought? Oh you mean the K people. (Reference to printer inks. If you still don't get it, go kill yourself)
-
Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Yea, organic ya tool, have you ever seen a concrete wall turn 90degrees sharp and have an edge like that? Or ever seen a soncrete pad without a crack or bump.
Organic shapes.

Re: [WIP] Ghetto Basketball Court
Should have done Rucker Park.
