Can I get some crit on this post please
Top quality A++ post Timo. Finest I have seen in ages.
Thanks, it was a speed post -- only 10-20 seconds. Good to see I didn't lose any points for quality.

Daniel Jackson from Stargate Sg1/Atlantis. I used my own palate colors and its a half paint over for main shapes and the rest isnt. =)

Was doing a concept of a starship, but I wanted something epic in it, to make it different from other scifi ships. Eh, I dont seem to be able to think of something epic that would go with it. :(
Stargate is awesome :)
Should be, "Might I get some critiques on this post, please?"
It's instantly recognizable as Jackson, so great job. I think you need to work the mouth a bit more because he has a bit of a blue steel expression.
Try committing to lines instead of making short scratchy strokes. A smaller brush would help, as would some perspective lines draw out beforehand. Don't forget you can click, then use shift+click to create a straight line. As for the design of the ship, I don't find it attractive nor practical. For example, tiny sub-light engines stuck to the side of the hangars is just strange.
When I use my tablet with Shift+click, it fades away to the second point. Any idea why?
That's because it's pressure sensitive, so just press harder on the second point.
Additionally, you can do another line in the reverse direction.
Heh, I tried the reverse direction thing. Doesnt work to well.
Alright, ill try the pressure thing then, thanks!
E/ Those arent sub light things on the side of the hangers, just some sort of prop thingy. :p
@ Josh
That ship looks like it'd fit in with some of the ones from Starship Troopers.
the us army doesn't mark things that obnoxiously and they also don't use that font as much as you might think
i'd get some refs for you but a) tired, b) cousin's pc is slow as fuck, c) do it yourself.

@Llama Aren't your sand barricades facing the wrong way?
Idk about you guys, but I can't draw a line straight or the way I want it for shit. Whenever I try to draw a line on paper or tablet, its really shaky and not straight. I can think of how a line is supposed to look in my head, but when I do it my hand wants to go all over the place, and I can't get the line to look how I want. Hence I do multiple small strokes when I draw instead of one long stroke, otherwise it looks terrible. I suppose that's the kind of thing that requires practice/formal education.
I just make good use of the undo keys, performing a stroke as many time as necessary before it looks the way I want. Don't forget that CS4 lets you rotate the canvas like you would rotate your paper.
to practice drawing straight lines on paper, draw a series of dots and go from one to the other with ONE stroke. do a couple sheets like this a day and you'll get the hang of it quickly.
heck, i still do this and a page of ovals to warm up before getting into any serious drawing.
Hold shift to draw 90 degree lines with the brush tool.
A tip I was given was to never rest your wrist/forearm on the table, always draw a line with your arm raised off whatever it's resting on. You're probably already doing this but it means you won't be drawing arcs.
uh, no, draw with your whole arm, move your joints.
my left hand comes over to help whenever i draw, and even sometimes when i write. been doing it my entire life and can't help it. no idea why http://sa.tweek.us/emots/images/emot-spergin.png
I suck at drawing, but every traditional art teacher I had through college said to use my whole arm, I never really got the hang of it/confidence for it. I'll be giving Snaf's dot line suggestion a try though :P

I used Mental Ray materials in Maya with a physical Sun and Sky. There's presets in the mia_material_x material so that you can get close to a lot of the types of materials you'd want. I just tweaked the presets a bit and called it good. Then made sure my render quality was set to Production (Motion Blur) and hit render. Rather simple, just long render times.
That's cause you're not used to it. You gain more control over time as you get used to using your whole arm. I used to draw with just my wrist but now all I use is my arm. (Im an art major ;p)
No. For drawing, always use your arm to draw unless its something extremely small and detailed that you have to use your wrist for. Any college art professor will tell you to use your arm while drawing and use your wrist as minimal as possible. Im going to trust my drawing professor's teaching as use my entire arm.
Veex, check out these tutorials here
http://racer445.com/
they're super helpful
I usually only use my wrist to draw if im doing something thats say.. smaller than a 7" x 7" block. Im just so used to using my whole arm that I have a good amount of control over what im drawing. Our professor usually has us draw on 24" x 18" pieces of paper though so I get way more practice using my whole arm than my wrist.
an image the size of your hand you'd still use your whole arm, just small things in that image where you're trying to get really small fine details in is where you'd use just your wrist/fingers
Limited, if you're doing something of incredibly low detail, maybe that's okay. But it's nowhere near artistic, nor does it look good on any otherwise hand-drawn artistic piece.
You always use your arm when drawing and you really shouldn't rest or have your drawing hand in contact with the paper or resting it on the surface. Have your paper at an angle also helps. You shouldn't use your wrist all too much, maybe if you're going for some details a few mm in length. That's generally how it is, but when I draw circles, I usually have to use my wrist to get a visually perfect circle (key word is visually). Even then, the circle is usually less than 1 inch. anything larger would require movement of the arm instead of the wrist.
E: also I got a little less than half the glyphs done. Almost done with this, just prob 2-3 more simple details after the glyphs.
Really, really nice!
Dont get lazy and keep at it. It will be worth it.
Fake E/ are you planning on making a low poly model for this one? or you just making this for render purposes?
Got my tablet back and messed around in mudbox for my first semi-serious sculpt

My latest set of animations. These are kind of at a stand still right now. I wouldnt call this version complete, but its not too far. Maybe some CnC will help me get back into it. I'm working on an animation set for dual wielded sawn-off stoegers, and it sure as shit isn't easy. Will post when it nears completion.

Also: these are some animations I made for the sole purpose of exploring the process of putting animations in unreal. Didn't work quite so hard on them, but may as well post. If anyone has any advice for putting these in unreal, please halp.

Had a budget of 15k tris. I'm almost done. Need the rear stock for the default gun. I'm also suppose to make a flashlight, laser, and forgrip for this gun. Right now, you're looking at about 4.5k tris gun.

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/3884/testdv.jpg
I might go back and add a few more details if I'm under 10k tris with all accessories, but I'm just getting the basics down first. Guy just told me it was going into source. I have no idea what it will be use for or what mod at all =\
@Mr. Big: work on defining the mouth and ears more.
I see a huge symmetry line you can get rid of.
you're missing nearly every major detail and the ears are flat as fuck, pay attention to the actual skin first and worry about hair later
this could be the result of me hallucinating due to lack of sleep but i think i see inaccuracies with the scaling in particular
by the way that g36 mag is an airsoft mag, lmao
Might have been better if you could see down the road in the background, the trees look like they have a nice connecting arch.
My attempt at a design for the halo reach icon contest.
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/7770/13313249.jpg
Suggestions?
It's a little abstract. I can't tell what it's supposed to be, if anything. Also, it feels a little off-balance to me.
It looks nifty, tho, I can maybe see some people putting that on their armor.
e: maybe try seeing how it looks on different backgrounds to see how you might make it a little more balanced
meh, got better stuff to do.
I sent it to bungie. If they like the concept I also linked to the .psd if they want to change it.
Wait where is this? Like province/state?
Looks really beautiful btw. =)
It's a bit north of Victoria BC, where I live.
Lucky bastard. :(
Lovely picture yet again.
So I made this crate. Some people don't like it. I need to make it more fit for the Halo Universe. What should I do?
http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s...1R/bababba.jpg
It's neat and all, but if you want it to fit into halo you might as well scrap it unless you repurpose it as some kind of machine. Cargo containers don't have screens, and UNSC crates have different shapes than what you've got.
There's a typo in the directions. Additionally, the grammar is terrible. (And unfunny.)
My humor is dying =(
Well, I didn't want to make a copy of some Halo 2/3 crate. I wanted it to be different, but if you say so, I can scrap it. Any suggestions on how to start the new one?
go into it looking at references. base your designs on them, but tweak them to be original. it'll be on a ship, so it won't have to be olive drab. be realistic. crates don't have screens on them because it costs too much to put it on them, and it doesn't make much sense to have them on items unless the items are high priority and need to be secure as hell.
e: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Crate
serials and other text are pretty bad, serial numbers aren't just random strings of characters. screen text is not funny. none of the fonts used look suited to the halo universe, nor does the colour palette.
Crossposting here for some quick crit. Still in my sketchy phase with the tablet. Also, he's doing that painful trick with his index finger. I don't have photoshop on this computer, so I did it in sumopaint (no fucking pressure sensitivity support ). Ignore that single line across his chin that makes it look square.
http://imgur.com/gTfbA.png
eh...sumopaint drags your stuff way down.
Just test of the low poly model. IDK how good it looks. is it too low quality for unreal? I think it's a bit low quality, but we'll see once i get it into the engine (kinda having prob with that, but going to see if I have better luck with the school's unreal engine). Stand isn't done, prob going to lower the quality of the stand to fit with the stargate.
version 4.7.5.5 (yup, a jump back sincev5 model wasn't used in any part of this model.actually, there is one part that used the v5 model reworked the v4.5 textures and fixed up the model a bit. some parts were made from scratch, most of the textures are redone.
version 4.5.2 for comparison: both models are in the same tris range if i remove the glyphs
Pretty cool, nice work.

Kid, fix the G36 before I drag Freelancer into this thread
Yes, because what would a soldier know about rifles :lolugh:
I'm telling you right the fuck now, those are airsoft mags.
http://world.guns.ru/assault/as14-e.htm
Next time, maybe you should check your references before you decide to argue with someone whose job it is to handle military firearms? Don't ever use airsoft gear for refs. In fact, don't use anything that isn't a real, serviceable firearm unless it's on modelguns.uk, and even then tread carefully.
e/f;b
The way your post came across to me was more "I MADE THIS OFF OF GOOD REFS I CHALLENGE YOU TO PROVE ME WRONG" rather than "Oh, what's wrong?".
It's not FOV distortion, trust me. I thought something looked off and it took all of two seconds looking at the world.guns.ru photos for me to twig on what it was. The rail spacing is wrong, the mags are definitely airsoft mags, the pistol grip is of the wrong cross-section, the ejection port is too high and slightly misshapen considering the detail in other areas... I realise refs of the real thing are a pig to find, but they're out there if you know where to look. I'd imagine you're probably not as into rifles as me, but it shouldn't take long to work out what's an airsoft mag and what's not; a real mag wouldn't have that 'step' at the rear, and would have some form of lip curling inwards at the top to prevent the rounds from just popping out of their own accord.
@kid908
It needs to be more shiny and have more lights, which UT is good at.
So it's been what, 2 years you've been working on that model?
nice, i like the layout and ui.
There is an extreme overuse of 'glow' and drop-shadow on things that really don't need it. Plus the shadows seem too intense and at nasty angles for the thumbnails. I do not like the border around the thumbnails, it should have an even pixel border rather it just looks a bit stretched and awkward. I don't get the Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop icons in the bottom middle. Why are they there? I hope they're not actually supposed to be there. The italicized font for your name and the title under it doesn't match the rest of the websites flow of design. There is a lot of blank space in the dead center and it, as well as the Icons mentioned before, look a bit off. If you scrapped the icons in the middle and made the brightness darker it would look more interesting as a center piece. Just noticed all the gradients, you might wanna ease up on that a bit.
You really gotta think of how you are using your space. It can end up being a problem or looking bad. You could just add 2 sections under Digital art, one for Wacom Paintings and the other for the rest. Think about integrating the giant icon above 'Home' into the banner and create a small image to go along with it, and within that image throw in your name and title to spruce it up. I would imagine 'Contact' would either have a tab of it's own or most likely under about.
It's alright, I'm not a fan of it but gave my critique.
I think you need something more bandwidth friendly. All of it is made up of images, and large non-repeating images at that.
