Let's see here, it takes them FUCKING FOREVER to make something new for Half-Life, and it took them a DECADE to make TF2, and then L4D2 comes out almost right after L4D1 came out.
Why, Valve, why? Focus your energies on your games which have a MUCH bigger fanbase than L4D.
TF2 is considered one of the best class-based shooters of all time (admittedly, this isn't such a big deal because of all the extra goodies Valve has been giving us over the years).
HL2 (and HL1) are considered one of the best games of all time.
L4D is not.

Maybe the developers at VALVe like to dabble in things besides decade-old titles? Take Bungie for instance...they've been working on Halo for about 12 years...TWELVE FUCKING YEARS. And they are finally making their last Halo title, probably because they want to do something new. Left 4 Dead is new. VALVe wants to spend time expanding that game, they deserve it. Half-Life may have a bigger fan-base, but as long as they continue to net a profit, they can do as they please.Quote:

Left 4 Dead 2 is the best valve game aside from the ragers you get in game, with TF2 close behind. I'm guessing their goal is work on multiplayer content more people would buy instead of spending efforts on single player content. I did like the HL2 series but it is SP, you can't play it more than once and not get sick.
Well, I don't know that I'd agree with that assessment. I don't own a single L4D game because I personally just don't like it. I'd gladly play single player oriented games over and over again if they are good, and I know that the size of the demographic that likes single player is quite sizable. I just think VALVe is taking a break from Half-Life and trying to establish itself as a studio that makes great games, not just "the studio that brought you Half-Life."
So I am playing Half Life for the first time and SHIT this game is hard.

yeah, hl1 is ridiculous. that said, i miss the days where games didn't hold your fucking hand all the way and make you akin to the destroyer in terms of ease in killing enemies

As far as i've seen, Valve likes its community mods. I think they're waiting on Black Mesa to come out before anyone says anything at all...
That said, when Valve does come out with HL: 3 or Hl 2: ep 3, it's going to be on a brand new engine. Think about it, guys. L4D2 may be a game but I think it's closer to the engineers at Valve experimenting and working with gameplay and new physics elements for Half Life 3 or ep 3 than Valve would let on.

Yeah, but the thing about the Half-Life series is that the player has never lost continuity with a conscious Gordon Freeman. So, we'd have to sit through a 3000 mile chopper ride from eastern Europe to the Arctic circle. Longer if they have to stop for gas.Quote:

Hey, it was Valve's decision to make everything contiguous. I don't think it really makes the game better, but it's their thing. They can't abandon it now.

I really want to play a Portal 2 or HL2:Ep3. Both would be so awesome. And don't they both tie into each some how? I remeber reading somewhere about the cargo ship that was talked about in ep2 had the portal tech on it, but idk. Guess I'll have to wait and see, I should probably replay the series as well becuase its extremely fun.
Story is great, gameplay is horrid. Always been the same ever since HL1. If they could at least just make walking more then a slight screen wiggle, it might add more effect to it seeing as in every Source game you glide along the floor at pretty high speeds without moving your gun too much.

ep1 started after some LOL VORTIGAUNTS and odd teleportation (as Alyx says, it's been a few hours since the citadel exploded) and Ep2 started after the train had crashed down a bridge (which you hadn't gotten onto by the time the citadel SPOILERD wait like anyone cares anymore, exploded~).

Ironic bitching aside, I would like to point out that by promising episodic releases and then going on to do other things with no intention of even finishing episode 3 in the near future, valve really seems to be saying "we don't care" to the fans of the series that made their name.
They're making more people happy with their more popular games, and they have every right to do whatever they want with their own IPs, but I still find it somewhat insulting. They started something that a lot of people love, but then decided to leave those people hanging so they could make other people happy. It's just... rude.

Yeah in all fairness, it seems like the way this typically works is a certain core team within valve works on half life, or at least is currently working on hl2ep3, and that the new games were/are done by different teams. The only trouble is that doesn't really fit with the comment that there are no near-future plans for episode 3... does that mean they really want to blow us away with their tech and content and therefore need a lot more time, or does that mean the core team actually was reassigned for the time being?

I have a conspiracy theory for you: Valve never actually had the story planned out and have been making it up as they go, and now they can't figure out how to resolve the craziness what with the gman and the slug things and aperture science and the borealis.
You know, I expected a Portal sequel as well... crazier conspiracy theory: they're working on further integrating the Portal and Half Life universes.
Or, the craziest theory of all: they've taken a break from the Half Life series to explore other games, broaden their consumer base, and try new things instead of going the Bungie route...

Bungie: Halo 1 came out in 2001. It's 2010, move on to new things!
Valve: Half Life 1 came out in 1998. It's 2010, keep expanding your story!
ee: But to be serious, the difference is, you see, that Bungie wrapped up their main storyline and now they're mucking about with the side-quests, while Valve left us withcountless questionsa fucking cliffhanger and refuses to tie it up any time soon.
Episodic games are supposed to be released faster than regular games.

I think that VALVe TIMe increases exponentially as it goes, starting a new spur each time there's a new project (ex: If VALVe intended to make a L4D3 and intended for an early winter release next year, it would take at least 6 more months, putting its release at early fall 2011, and L4D4 would take another 6 to 12 additional months, putting its earliest release at early winter 2013). With this understanding of VALVe TIMe, we can predict that HL3 will be indefinitely postponed, sadly.
Left 4 Dead seems to be immune from larger amounts of VALVe TIMe. I mean L4D2 was released on schedule, which was just a year after L4D1.
At least we have come to this conclusion: Valve is not made up solely of people from Bungie or Blizzard.
