343 announces new F2P Halo PC game tailored for Russian audience

Most of me wants to think this is an April fools joke. It says on the site they "partnered with Saber Interactive and Innova Systems to make an all-new, free Halo multiplayer PC experience that will launch in spring, only in Russia."

It's running on a heavily modified Halo 3 engine so it can work well on older systems.

Go to halo-online.ru and click on создай аккаунт on the right side. Click on Facebook icon, sign in with facebook. Check the box and accept. Tell them where you live and your email. Now all you need is a code.

Of course, it has halo 4 assets. no way it's possible for those old engines to handle high definition and modern assets.

It's running way smoother than h2v ever did on my PC.

Anyways I was so fucking pissed when it was announced for Russia only, I'm glad it was leaked. Kind of expected Russians leak Microsoft Builds all the time...

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but forge is now playable and works to a decent degree.

"Works" as in you can place weapons and that's it because we can't change menus. D:

You can now navigate the forge menus with a x360 controller in the latest release.

My camera keeps pointing upwards while in forge mode...

Xbox isn't as popular over there as it is in the United States, and that means Microsoft isn't making a whole lot of money from Russia.
This free to play Halo game on the PC is designed to have purchasable (rentable?) weapons (and powerups? I'm not really following it atm)
It'll probably make it overseas one day, and I bet by then it'll either be horribly maintained or dead (H2V levels of both).

Halo: Combat Evolved for the PC and Halo: Custom Edition already work. Sometimes there are mostly Blood Gulch CTF 24/7 servers and really bad custom maps, but the games do indeed work. I've seen some pretty bad map variants and gametypes on the servers in Eldewrito, so apparently only graphics have improved, not peoples' taste.

Loadouts and custom weapons can sometimes be fun, but Halo's philosophy in balance was "Everyone starts with these two weapons, everyone is balanced" with everything else pretty much being a power weapon. It worked well, and it continues to work really well. When you mess with that balance, to me, that's when it starts to feel less like Halo and more like generic modern shooter 2.

Reach did all right with loadouts where the only difference between different loadouts on most gametypes were your armor abilities. The only exception to this rule I can recall is Invasion and Firefight, but then that also worked really well because it was Spartans versus Covenant and was intentionally imbalanced; this meant that players had to change up their play styles from traditional Spartan versus Spartan matches. Because of the customization behind them, I have doubts about Halo: Online's version of loadouts.
