I've had a few people asking me "What addons should I get for Gmod?" lately, so I've decided to make a thread about it. I'll go over what addons you need, what addons you might want and what addons you might not want now, as well as explaining what they are, how to install them and also how to get into gmod (bold text is the latest edit). Need:
PheoniX-Storms Final v2: This is the most used model pack in all of Gmod. You'd be hard pressed to find a server which doesn't support it, and for builders, it's pretty much essential. It has uniform peices from tirangles, to tubes, to BOMBS, to RT screens (so that you can show what an RT camera sees on something anybody can view) and a pile of other shit as well.
Wire mod: Wire gives Gmod so much extra abilities, it would take me half an hour to go through them all. basically, it gives you the ability to "program" anything from thrusters, to hoverballs, to numpads, to doors, to hydrolics, to anything. It also has screens if you need to display values or something (such as energy levels on a spacebuild ship), sound emitters (playing songs from any source game you have) and a heap of other crap. Can be used to make auto-tracking turrets, deathtraps, self correcting planes and so much more. Wire also comes with the advanced duplicator, which allows you to copy and save entire contraptions or bases, and then upload them to servers (or download them to your HD if you made them on a server) to use in multiplayer.
May want:
Smart Snap: Displays a "holographic" grid over props, so that you can align things exactly (press E and your tool will automatically align at exactly 90 degrees to which ever grid intersection is closest to the crosshair). Indespensible for any half serious builder.
Easy Precision: My tool of choice when it comes to constrains. It can do sliders, axis's, welds, parenting, ballsockets and one or two other things I can't remember, and gives you lots more variables to tweek (offsets, insets, friction etc).
Stacker: If your one of those guys who likes to make random forts around the map, then the stacker tool is for you. If you've ever been in a server and seen somebody magically spawn 5 props all in lign with each other, this is how they did it. Really, this should be in the need group.
Smart Constraint: Allows you to weld and/or no-colide multiple props at once. Left click to select props (highlights them red so you can tell what is and isn't selected), right click to activate. Cheers to trace for reminding me about this bad boy.
Weight Stool: Allows you to adjust the weight of anything from props, to sents, to vehicles, to ragdolls. Be aware that adjusting the weight of a prop reduces the strength that a weld exerts on it (no idea why :/ ). Thanks to Nick for reminding me.
Random shit I like (svn's may be required for some of them):
Spacebuild: Fly me to the moon.. Anyways, Spacebuild is exactly what it says on the can. Build space ships, and fly them around the universe. There's quite a few addons needed, but if you just want to play multiplayer, You don't need them and I can't find half of them so I'm not going to list them. However, to save you 10 (more like 30 for me :/) minutes waiting time while you join a server, I suggest you get this, this and this (my favourite maps).
Gcombat: BOOM MOTHA FUCKER!! Gcombat has a pile of realistic (and less than realistic) weaponary for those who want to make war, not love. LRM, smart missiles, terain avoiding missiles, lasers, vulcan cannons, Torpedo's, Energy daggers and more are the mainstay of gcombat and brings Gmod warfare to the next level. The health of a prop is determined by it's weight, so you can use the weight stool to make your contraptions harder to destroy (at the trade off of them becoming heavier). Unfortunately, I've only found a small handful of servers that support it. :/
Spacebuild model pack: A pile of modular props for use with spacebuild. their all very minimalist (not to say their not extremely functional) to reduce server lag (definently a good thing in spacebuild)
Stargate: More than just stargates! Along with the glowy blue guys (did I mention it has SG1 and Atlantis gates?), it also has iris's (hurrr), Ring transporters, weapons (jafa staff's, zats, ribbon devices, sodan cloaks, ring callers, etc), big guns (for ships, including drones and laser cannons), shields, cloaks and more.
Shuttle: Building flying contraptions has never been easier. Simply weld the shuttle into your contraption, press e on it and you can fly it :D (and it doesn't require life support in spacebuild). you may want to set it's transparency to 0 with the colour tool first though (for aesthetic reasons). Note that this is really only useful on small fighters (anything more than 150% the size of the jalopy will start to suffer)
Hoverboard: The hoverboard is just fun. you can do stunts, glide, skid, jump, boost or whatever. it also makes it easier to get around the larger maps like flatgrass.
Tiled building blocks: Compatible with PHX, the TBB pack took a while to take off, but the extra peices it offers are incredible. Really worth a look.
There's a great tutorial on how to install and use SVN's around here somewhere, but I can't find it.
This'll do for now anyways.
If anybody feels I've forgotten something or have their own 2 cents to add, don't hesitate to speak up. I'm hoping that this can get a big fat sticky (partly to help new players, partly to stop them bugging me :p ).
E: Boba pointed out in chat that I didn't mention how to install the addons (facepalm.jpg). Navigate to your steam folder and go to steam/steam apps/YOUR_ACCOUNT_NAME/garrysmod/garrysmod/addons. Everything I listed above except the maps goes in that folder.
The maps go in steam/steam apps/YOUR_ACCOUNT_NAME/garrysmod/garrysmod/maps. I've explained this better down bellow:

This map comes complete with 4 sections for building, posing, playing around, and racing! The posing area is a forest style area that looks like the ending parts of Episode 2, the race track has a garage where you can spawn a Jeep, Jalopy, or 2 custom cars built into the map, you can also start a race with up to 4 players, or replace some with 2 AI controled cars.
The construct areas have regular Construct textures and buildings, as well as some water. There's a taxi system if you don't wanna walk or noclip to places.
Plus everything custom is injected into the map file, so that there's no problems!
This map is great for building in general, there's the main area above ground with water and a large flat grass area.
There's an underground area with a lot of rooms for testing contraptions, as well as subway system that connects both areas.
There's also a teleporter system that brings players to different areas of the map.
This is a great tutorial on how to use an SVN updater. The one used in this tutorial is Tortise SVN and is the one I and many other people I know use.
To use addon's, simply extract them to your steam/steamapps/your steam user name/garrys mod/garrys mod/addons.
To use custom maps you downloaded outside of the game (as in; not while your were connecting to a server), extract the .bsp to the steam/steamapps/your steam user name/garrys mod/garrys mod/maps folder, and any other files that came with the map in the appropriate folder (eg, if there's stuff in a "materials" folder, extract them to the material's folder in the garrysmod/garrysmod folder).
For those not sure if they want to get into gmod:

To play Garry's mod 9, you must own atleast 1 of any of these games: Half Life 2, Counter-strike: Source or Day of Defeat: Source.
For Gmod 10, any source engine game will do (any of the above, any of the HL2 episodes, Team Fortress 2, Portal or Left 4 Dead).
I suggest giving Gmod 9 a go before buying Gmod 10 (although it is only ~$10 USD..) just to see if Gmod is the sort of game you'd be interested in. There's certainly a wide variety of game modes for Gmod (mainly Gmod 10, like Role Play, Space Build, dedicated construction, Melon Racer, etc) so you should be able to find something to enjoy.
Then again, it's not everybody's cup of tea.
However, if you encounter any troubles with Gmod 9 and still want to try it, your only going to get one option when you ask for help:
Buy Garry's Mod 10.

Smart Weld is good for Single-player or LAN servers, but not for mulitplayer.
For Multiplayer, use Smart COnstraint.

Updated OP with a good tutorial on how to update your version of wire using SVN so you always have the latest and the greatest.
The same method apply for plenty of other SVN's too (such as stargate or the SBMP).

I've been hearing alot about Gmod, it sounds realy cool... But what game is the mod for,
and is the game (legally) free? (Once a game gets old enough it might become free, depends on the EULA.)

I should also mention you can get it in a pack with either Counter-Strike Source or Team Fortress 2 if you don't already have Half-Life 2. You will need some Source engine game to go with it for it to work though. You can also try Garry's Mod 9 for free, but Gmod 10 is better in every way.

I'd also like to point out you can get the old version of Gmod (9) for free. Look it up on google.
Gmod 9 doesn't have as many features and isn't as polished as the retail version (Gmod 10) but it's good to check it out before you spend the $10 on the retail version.

Supposedly if you host your own multiplayer server, spawn some props and then rejoin whatever server you were in it works fine.

Re: ATTN: new Gmod players
If you mean where the spawn menu is messed up and and shrunk into a single tab well it's something to do with the server not having the latest update, because on update 46 I think it was Garry made an error, that's why a further patch was released soon after.

Lucky for you, I think if you download steam (or already have it dled w/e, I haven't read much of the topic) and put in the cd key that came with your DVD, steam will let you download all those games instead of making you install them via DVD. And no, none of the steam games to my knowledge require a disk to play.

The reason is because when you buy one, you also get the Source SDK(for mapping, making mods, etc.) and the SDK base, which Garry's Mod runs on.

Well, now I'm right back where I started...
Ok, I gotta' make a list of this real quick, help peple helping me know what's happening(without going through other pages).
Half life 2: episode 1, 2 and deathmatch
Gmod 9
Tried:
Changing "220" in the MOTD file in Gmod 9 untill it showed up, then changed it back,(if that's the problem a simple reinstall would fix)
Ran Source SDK base, only real option was "video stress test" so I tried that,(for 29 FPS through out the whole thing)
Restarting Steam(20 times)
Restarting my computer
Things I noticed that might help(but havin't tried yet):
Installing HL2: lost coast Tchinese(want to install when I try and run Gmod9)
have SDK base running while playing Gmod9.
Other then changing the MOTD(then changing it back), I have NOT modded ANYTHING inside the Steam folder.
If anyone spots a problem with this(other then typos, I'm sure you noticed I make them alot )let me know.

Remind them that people associated with large, successful companies (Valve) are most likely not scam artists. (That is if they're willing to pay the sum of 10$)
If it's the fact that its a mod and not a full game, remind them that it's only 10$ and that its distributed through Steam.

I don't usually bother with SWEPS (i mainly play online where they're useless unless the server has them). But, go to garrysmod.org and search for halo swep, realisitc CS (if you're into that), chainsaw gun, dismemberment mod and this badboy looks like fun too.
NPC packs, i really don't pay much attention to. Just type NPC into garrysmod.org and you'll find some (i know there's packs for all the HL:S aliens, a dragon, terminators, etc)
And you don't really need more tools than the ones I mentioned, but you may as well check out the fin tool (don't ask me how to use it), measuring stick, (you can see i'm only interested in building tools, not silly ones), etc.
Just join a MP server and see which ones you like vOv
As for portal guns, I've seen a few but never tried any. just look some up on garrysmod.org

Re: ATTN: new Gmod players
I would recommend Half Life: Renaissance. Lots of Half Life and Opposing Force aliens and humans. Pretty much bug free and also adds some redone Half Life weapons.
This one adds additional Combine NPCs such as the Strider and Gunships.
And finally Dan's Mega NPC Pack V2 adds a whole ton of NPCs from a whole bunch of universes including Star Wars, Aliens, Doom. Most of them are based on the standard HL2 NPC's but if you want some variety this is perfect.
These are all ones I use so I can personally say they work(for me anyway).

Re: ATTN: new Gmod players
Tell me what needs updating and I'll look into it, I don't play that much Gmod these days (though my bro still whores it for hours every day so if I can't find it, he can).
