Recorded animations were a system Bungie used to move actors and vehicles in a uniform fashion utilizing the animations already imported into the game. It allowed dropships to follow the same path every time without having to turn it into some form of a scenery object. It had a lot of potential at the time, but it turned out to be really hard to do.
