More than likely you'd probably need 7 or later, but I really don't want to leave Maya users in the dark, but a certain someone has failed to talk to me...

I guess I may have to learn Maya's SDK :o. Wouldn't look bad on the resume though

all mayas can use MEL (Maya Embedded Language) which you can write scripts with and stuff. Anything you write would be compatible with most mayas I bet.
