It's called a slide release. When a magazine loaded weapon runs out of cartridges, the slide typically stays back after the round is fired. In this case, the bolt moves back to locked position. This is so when you load a fresh magazine, you dont have to pull the bolt back to load a fresh cartridge into the chamber. Instead, all you have to do is release the bolt and it will automatically push a new round in. For some weapons, this can be done with the push of a button/lever while for others you might need to release it manually. I'd have to imagine in the future, it might even be done automatically after loading a fresh magazine. Who knows? I mean, it is fictional after all.
