32 bit vs 64 bit vista

K, so I'm buying a new desktop. Wooohooo. I've got most of the technical stress out of the way, but I need to decide between 32 or 64 bit vista. I'd be fine with whatever, but I need to know: does 64 bit pose any technical problems for any aspects of CE modding (HEK, Max 8, playing the actual game, etc)? I've heard that it has other technical problems with hardware. Is it worth getting the 64?

I've heard of driver issues, never cared to check for anything else. The driver issue (I've heard) is basically that anything that isn't WHQL certified won't install.

I haven't had any problems with 32-bit Vista lately. Getting the 64-bit lets you use more Ram and that is probably all I know about it.

I couldn't get max 8 running on my 64 bit vista comp. There was a problem with direct x initiating. I just upgraded to max 9 sp2 for vista 64 and now its all good.

I've used Vista x64 basically since launch and I've only had one device that wouldn't work with it; some very old TV tuner card from KWorld.

Other than that, it's been perfectly fine.

As for whether 64bit is worth it; Do you use any 16 bit apps (eg. DOS games)? If so, unless you don't mind using Virtual PC to emulate Vista x86 or XP I wouldn't use it. Also, if you aren't using more than 3 gigs of ram then you should probably stick with the plain old x86 version.

Better solution: wait for Windows 7 and use the 64 bit version of it.

PS; if you want to get Max 8 working in Vista x64, just disable Aero/UAC and make sure you have the latest 3DS Service Pack for it. Max 9 will work with both Aero and UAC enabled with the latest Service Pack for it but it has some issues redrawing viewports; disable Aero and it will work fine. In fact, if you want to make this easier I think there's an option in the shortcut to make it automatically disable "visual styling" or something like that; basically, that kills off Aero whenever you launch the app.

Never had an issue with Vista 64 on all the computers I've used it on extensively. Unless you have some old legacy hardware you can't bear to part with or ancient games/apps, there's no reason not to switch over to 64-bit. When Vista Home Premium 64-bit is $99.99, it's win-win.

Get XP Home now and then upgrade to Win 7 Ultimate or Home Premium when it's released. If you're buying an OS at the moment, your wasting money if you buy Vista, Windows 7 blows it out of the water.

Vista is cheaper than XP if he buys at Newegg...XP is running at $120, and Vista is $99.99.
