Loving how most of the people who hate 4chan have hardly ever been there themselves.

You have no idea how 4chan works, do you?

They should take them on via the usual legal system, not block them.

Why wouldn't they just come out and say that then, I'd accept that as a much more legitimate reason than the usual OMGTHEYHAVECP crap.

That happens for a few days, every other month.
4chan doesn't go away though, the community just moves elsewhere (/b/ shits on /x/ if it's just /b/ that's down, or everyone goes to other *chans if the whole site is offline).
4chan's legacy is here to stay, like it or not. As it stands, 4chan is actually containing the mess (I'm mainly talking about /b/ here, most of the other boards are pretty good).

If by that you mean page 1 has 5 different but disturbingly similar "baaw" threads, then yeah it's great.

I'd see it as a more legitimate reason too, but think about most of the common internet userbase. They hear at&t blocked a kiddie porn site. Not only does that sound like a "good" reason to block the site, it actually gets people on their side rather than staying neutral. Now some (stupid) people can be like, "hey my isp blocks kiddie porn what does your shitty isp do? " Or if someone brings it up on some news show they can ask a normal person, uneducated about any of this (read: damn near everyone), and they'd be like, "oh yeah sounds like a great thing at&t is doing."

Uhhhh am I supposed to not be able to see porn on 4chan or something? Because I just tried it with my iPhone (which is using at&t's 3G network atm) and I could see every damn thing on that site.

    From the 4chan statusblog:

For the past three weeks, 4chan has been under a constant DDoS attack. We were able to filter this specific type of attack in a fashion that was more or less transparent to the end user.

Unfortunately, as an unintended consequence of the method used, some Internet users received errant traffic from one of our network switches. A handful happened to be AT&T customers.

In response, AT&T filtered all traffic to and from our img.4chan.org IPs (which serve /b/ & /r9k/) for their entire network, instead of only the affected customers. AT&T did not contact us prior to implementing the block. Here is their statement regarding the matter.

In the end, this wasn't a sinister act of censorship, but rather a bit of a mistake and a poorly executed, disproportionate response on AT&T's part. Whoever pulled the trigger on blackholing the site probably didn't anticipate [nor intend] the consequences of doing so.

We're glad to see this short-lived debacle has prompted renewed interest and debate over net neutrality and internet censorship—two very important issues that don't get nearly enough attention—so perhaps this was all just a blessing in disguise.

Aside from that, I'll also add that there is some big news due later this week. Keep an eye on the News page, Twitter, and global message for updates.

As always, I can be reached at moot@4chan.org.

PS: If any companies would like to hook us up with some better hardware, feel free! The architecture we've got powering this large and influential beast is really quite embarrassing. ( ._.)
