Don't worry, he's a native. Note the Japanese text on the water bottle and that all of the manga is also in Japanese (may be hard to tell, look carefully if you really care). Also notice the Shinto charms hanging from the wall. The calendar is also Japanese, but not anime/manga - it's from Mitsubishi (三菱) [Also note that the second Monday of October is red - it's a holiday, specifically Health and Sports Day... which I highly doubt our photographer here celebrated].
