E: ARGH...so I just realized why I was a little confused at some parts. I gotta play blue shift and opposing force. I know they arent vital, but I would have loved to have recognized barney when I saw him in Black Mesa, and I would have loved to know where the combine came from without having read the wikipedia entry.

Valve considers both of the HL expansions as non-canon; neither of them explain the Combine's arrival, as the player is meant to extrapolate from various tibits from characters (particularly Kleiner's breencast in Ep1), and the Barney gag is a reference to the HL security guard's model filename and that one of their lines pre-Resonance Cascade said something about catching a beer later.
