they, like jesus, are the ultimate torch. They stay lit, provide light, and anything that touches them takes damage and may light on fire.

They don't burn out? Is that a server-side addon or has Notch disabled them?

some servers (see most) disable flint and steel because it is a powerful griever tool

It's actually a glitch, the infinite log burning. It only works on single logs, though. A stack of them will burn away. I'm not sure why it happens, but it's great for making damaging torches, or decorative fireplaces.
