unfortunately you can't use a bucket o water in the nether, it burns up immediately. Its best to take many buckets, fill them with lava, and transform them into obsidian back home.

That's what I do too. On top of that, I can't mine Obsidian, 'cause I got no diamond tools. I just pour the lava into a frame.
no diamond eh? You should spend some time mining the caverns in the overworld then. Also, i've noticed that it is a wise idea to mine the area surrounding diamond ore as well as the ore itself. Sometimes diamond ore blocks will separate themselves from the rest of the vein, and people will never find them because they're at a diagonal, or a block or two off from the pack. Just a little tip for the future.
buckets dont, but water blocks ARE NOT affected
Download that XRay app, can show you where all types of block are, that is if your real desperate.
Better? Once I hit about day 4 or 5 it'll get way more interesting.
