Downloading is the better option since it includes the patches already. Alright, so once you have your clean install, use this guide to get the English files installed and activated along with patching the game. Remember, when you get to step 3, only use ONE of the methods. It's the exact same guide I used to change my game to English, so if it doesn't work you're missing a step or your computer is seriously borked (well, if you're using Vista, your computer is borked by default).

Just poking fun at Freelancer's comment that EA didn't make BF3, which is true. I just don't consider DICE 2011 the original DICE. DICE were the guys who made BF1942 through BF2. From what I've heard, a lot of them left because of the EA acquisition. So you could say that "DICE" made BF3, but in actuality, the real DICE didn't make BF3.
Now we're stuck with the console-focused sell-out misery that is BF3. The game isn't fun. It's addicting, but it's also really fucking stressful. Five minutes in, and I'm already popping a blood vessel because of all the retardation going on (people and mechanics). Unfortunately, BF3 is better than 90% of the multi-player games out there. Terrible state of affairs, really.
