Dream combo - AK-74M with 1P29. I want it so badly. Other white whale: a side-mount PEM 91/30 (not repro). SashaVedernikov on YT (cool dude who posts tons of stuff on Red Army snipers and recolours some amazing WWII photos, got me back into doing so myself) says he knows the serial of Zaitsev's original rifle from before he was wounded - the one he used in Stalingrad - but the odds on that one are a bit long I think
Totally agree, point being you just can't find authentic cold war era russian 47's for even a remotely cheap price, provided you can find one someone's willing to sell

Also they have his PU sniper on display in a museum. I think in Stalingrad he had a PE scope

74M's only come in polymer. AK-74 proper comes in wood and plum polyamide, as does the AKS-74. Legit '74s in wood look absolutely stunning.

Also, an SVT-40 is ~$900 here in the States. I wouldn't call that steep, really.

My "white whale" gun would have to be a .303 Lee-Enfield Mk. V transition rifle. It looks almost the same as the Mk. III*, but it has a single-piece top and it uses aperture sights instead of the traditional v-notch sight. I hate the No. 4's looks, I do not want one of those.

Other hard-to-obtain desirable would be a Winchester M1894 Legacy rifle; it's a full-length, full-stocked lever action with a semi-pistol grip on the stock (rather than the typical straight grip). I want the one in .50-90, but I'll take any caliber.

That's not bad at all considering I'm definitely going to pickup one of those RobArms XCR-M's in .308 if/when I get into the Reserves or get a job again.

He had a PEM on the side mount in Stalingrad, like Chekhov and most of the other snipers there. The top mount was more common but for some reason they returned to the side mount for a while before switching over to the PU. Zaitsev was wounded by shrapnel from a mine and had to have his vision restored, when he returned to service he was presented with a PU with a hero plate on the butt.

They are $280 in Canada. I wouldn't call 900 steep either; I'd call it fucking extortionate. Your government is fucking stupid and makes dumb laws. On the same topic, things are like that here but for any gun, so consider yourself lucky.

Speaking of which, I had a good chuckle earlier - a friend told me the guys I got my Mosin from have some 'snipers' in stock. To their credit the inverted commas are theirs, not mine, and they clearly state that the scopes and mounts are reproductions and the other work was done by gunsmiths. The rifles are not ex-snipers but very good condition Izhevsk infantry rifles, but they are asking a lot.

Like, $1,150 kind of a lot. My ex-sniper, absolutely mint, was $575, a PU scope from the same year with its mount was $400 including postage, and the rest of the work will probably bring me close to the same price - for a WWII scope on a legitimate sniper rifle. Jesus Christ Australia is a shitty place to live if you enjoy shooting, and even worse if you're into milsurp or rare items.

I can't recall for sure, but I believe I've seen original sniper rifles - as in, those left in their WWII state and not converted like mine - fetch $2,500 here. They're what, $150-250 in the US based on rarity and condition? Fucking disgusting.

e/ One last addition to this post - if any of you get an ex-sniper Mosin or SVT and intend to convert it to its proper form, don't bother with a reproduction scope. The cheap ones are shit, the good ones will run you north of $250 US, and an average wartime-production PU in still very much serviceable condition will seldom go for more than $400 US unless it is a rare variant, and that includes the mount. PE and PEM scopes and mounts are another matter entirely, though, and originals are much harder to find than the ubiquitous PU.

Probably not the best idea to post that on a public domain

Also call me a bitch but breaking the law, even a fucking stupid law that makes no logical sense, is still not a good thing and you should probably not do it, least of all because it just reinforces the stereotype of shooters not caring and doing illegal shit and THE BLACK MARKET
