That's ridiculous. I bought a 1945 M44 for $150 and a friend of mine bought a 43 M38 for $120. Both in top condition. Those prices are absurd.
they're only going to get worse. allow me to introduce you to australia!
no.4 mk.1 i bought 2 years ago: $400.
no. 4 mk.1 today, and not necessarily in as good a condition as mine: $6-800, minimum.
infantry 91/30 in the us: $100, give or take a few dozen.
comparable rifle in australia: $375, might find it for less at a gunshow but not likely. people often use gunshows as an excuse to gouge even more than the stores do.
91/30 sniper (original, unmodified) in the us: $400-450 i believe?
same rifle in australia? you're looking at anywhere north of $2,500. in fact any rifle with the word "sniper" anywhere near it will fetch well over $2,000 (which is roughly what you can expect to pay for a nice tikka or sako hunting rifle, slightly used or new).
i'm not real good with mauser values and i don't see a huge number here, but i do have one specific example -
portugese contract oberndorf kar98k, 1941, immaculate and all-matching: $2700 in a gunstore. one of my friends was selling his (same serial batch) a few years ago for a far more reasonable $1,900. the same rifle in the us? you'd be an idiot for paying any more than about $1,700. keep in mind that the australian dollar is far stronger than the us dollar recently.
infantry 91/30 with repro scope and mount and turned bolt handle, us: maybe $3-400, the cost is largely in the optics
same deal here: $1,150 which is roughly as much as it is going to cost me to convert my 91/30 sniper rifle back to sniper standard, using an original 1944 scope and mount.
consider yourselves very, very lucky.
oh, and
HELLO COMRADES. I GO TO FARM FOR TO SHOOT MOSINKA. I DO NOT HAVE AMMUNITION YET, BUT I GET MORE PICTURE WHILE I WAIT AND LATER I FIND CAMERA WITH UNBOX PICTURE ON IT.
$2700!?!? For a MAUSER!?!? What the fucking SHIT!?!?

That's me having a fucking seizure over that outrage.
Dat picture.
I could have gotten a 1952 Hungarian M44 all matching for $135 but I was a day late, I was pissed off for the rest of the day, but that was at my LGS (local gun store) and not the one with absurd prices. I need to go back to my LGS to see if they got anything new if not I'll wait for the Grand Rapids gun show.
Trust me, my money is going nowhere near them unless my friend can talk them down a very good amount since he knows the owner and a few other employee's.
E: Also at the one with absurd prices I found a Winchester Model 1895 in 7.62x54R, the russian contract ones, and guess how much they wanted, $1,200. It looked nice but not even close to that price.

www.gunbroker.com
that's where I've gotten a few of my guns including my 91/30 rifle. They usually have a lot of guns for the right price, especially C&R ones. Just browsing for a few seconds I found a few M44's between $120 and $220. Didn't check for M38's though.
Also not sure if that winchester price is right, but those are kind of rare now so I'd expect it to be a bit more
