I've actually been to St Maarten and done exactly that at the airport when we were on an outing from a Cruise. It's actually insanely fun to do that, but only when you're standing on the sand portion of the beach.

That area is really out of the way as well, unless you go there specifically you likely won't find it. I went there specifically because I like planes.
