He fought for the south because fighting for the North would mean claiming his home state as an enemy. Robert E. Lee had only a handful of slaves, and those were treated very well, better than a black man could live in the North. Not saying it was right, but in an old feudal sense (which is what the South really was) he was a very noble man.
