I used to think that too. I used to think the SKS was the ugliest rifle I'd ever seen (that was designed pre-1970s and actually mass-produced, anyway).
Seeing a single Soviet SKS changed my mind entirely. The Soviets had a thing for red shellac and deep blue and it just works.
Top is a 1949, OG SKS had a cruciform bayonet

i may have posted about this before, but does anybody know of red wood furniture like this exists for something other than the ak47? as pretty as it is on this gun, im interested to see if it can be found for any other russian weapons, like the rpk, svd, or maybe even a thompson (yes im aware the thompson isnt russian).
i feel like this is definitely a matter of personal preference, but i think the red is really pretty on this gun
The Soviets loved red shellac. Anything that ever saw a refurb or a factory shellac finish came out with a red (or red-brown/red-orange) stock.
The only times I have ever seen pre-70s Soviet rifles with stocks in any colour other than red were almost factory 91/30s or owner-refinished ones.
e/ If that red colour is actually the wood, I have no idea. Take off the buttplate and see what colour the wood is underneath.
spartan094....your wasr looks like a typical century build, with a grey parkerized finish (which btw is a great foundation if you decide to paint your rifle...lol) i just hope you have gotten one of their better builds...
donut...the soviets used "tinted" shellac to get that look , if your interested...this guy does awesome work with rifle furniture http://www.innovationarms.com/

It was actually not red shellac, it was an amber shellac and red stain or just amber shellac layered on so many times. You can find furniture like that for basically any Russian weapon that still used wood, but it is mad expensive at this point. I wanted a set of AK-74 stuff...that would have run me $750. Soviet AK-47 was not quite as expensive, but it was enough to make me pass on it in favour of the Polish set I got for $150 (I also got a an AK-47N type side-rail...).
As for how an AK should look; Soviets had a thing for their guns being very clean. They don't stay that way when used, but they were always in much better shape off the line than anybody else's, except maybe Bulgaria and East Germany. That said, for an AK to look good in a "worn" condition, it has to actually be worn in places that would experience the most rubbing. That means the bluing would first disappear off of the edges and corners, as well as where the selector lever carves a path along the receiver. The stock is going to get dings and nicks from getting dropped. The hugest problem with that WASR is that it has a grey powder finish...even modern AKs still use a black finish.
Anybody who paints camouflage and puts rails on an AK is a faggot, though. I don't even care if Russians love rails and do it all the time in real life, it's still hideous.

Neh I'm not bothered by what you said on the metal finish haha, the grey parkerized is neh, I may do something with it in the future.
It is a good build, I inspected it and dissembled it completely. No canted gas tube or front sight, or any signs of rust/pitting anywhere. All the metal mags I have are good, 2 dont wobble and 1 does wobble slightly but it doesnt affect it feeding. The bolt assmebly completed is matching and the gas tube is matching, everything else isnt but i dont care for a matching akm gun.
Also I have a thing for blued/worn AK's and red shellac. Also I'm going to remove the welded muzzle nut sometime and get a new gas system by knocking out the pins and replacing it with a new one with a bayo lug on it. I might just get a worn parts kit and do something with this WASR. Cheapest way. Oh and I got a ATI grip included with the purchase.
Also what is the best ak mags from what country. I'm aware of the tapco mags but idk how well they work or what you guys think/experience with them.
any surplus mag will be fine.....tapco mags generally are looked down upon by the ak community because of durability issues (ie feed lips not reinforced with metal like surplus polymer ones ) but imho they are fine as long as you dont abuse them....no magazine speed changes ala bf3 aek971 annimations :-P
