Have they forgotten what is arguably the chief advantage of PC gaming?

Do-it-yourself-DLC should be the standard. I don't mind paying for big expansion packs, but a small handful of multiplayer maps isn't worth paying for. I don't buy their crap that "the frostbite engine isn't user friendly" etc, it's nothing more than an excuse to fragment the community with paid DLC maps. Do-it-yourself DLC is why I've sunk hundreds of hours into Valve games and even COD4. Hell, it's not like consoles don't have the capability of DIY DLC - just look at far cry 1 on xbox, or little big planet on PS3. Now it's not to say that just because a game doesn't allow DIY DLC it's bad - some of my favorite games of all time have little to no modding capability at all. But it just feels insulting to have small "add-ons" shoved in our faces for a ridiculous price.
Compared to most other DLC packs, what you get with Back To Karkand and Armored Kill are probably worth the $15. And by the way, the maps are better for BF3 than CoD. Much better. And you're not getting just maps. You get new game modes and in some cases new weapons and vehicles.

All that said, it still sucks that there's no mods. If BF3 was actually as in-depth as BF2, then I don't think we'd complain so much about mods and DLC.

EDIT: More details about Armored Kill revealed

He adds, “in Armored Kill we have four new maps. We have Death Valley, Armored Shield, Bandar Desert and Alborz Mountain,” of which the latter two were shown off in the latest Armored Kill gameplay trailer which we highly recommend you check out right here!
So now we have all four map names: Bandar Desert, Alborz Mountain, Death Valley, and Armored Shield.

“We have 20 vehicles on all levels. We place them around, divided into each base. We’re going to have quad bikes, tanks in home base, but also, you’re going to be able to capture bases to get new tanks, for example, or to get a gunship.”
20 vehicles per map is quite a step up from most BF3 maps. I think up to this point Gulf of Oman has the most vehicles on a single map?

“We have lots and lots of feedback coming in and I think one example in Armored Kill, I saw on a forum, one person who actually had an example of what he thought, “you know, this would be an awesome idea for a big map,” and I think he was actually right. I think it was a really good idea. So, one of the maps in Armored Kill is heavily inspired by that. So, that’s just one example.”
I think Tank Superiority mode was what was suggested to DICE. I'd guess the Armored Shield is the map that has an even heavier focus on tank gameplay.

Have you seen the size of these maps? There's no way conquest assault would work.

I am anticipating Armored Kill with baited Breath. Perhaps it will redefine how Battlefield 3 should play. I so want to whore that mobile artillery...

Thats not the point though. 15 dollars is still a ridiculous amount of money for what your getting. I could pay 20 dollars for the Skyrim expansion and get 25 more hours of exciting new gameplay, were as the 4 maps (idk the number exactly) you get probably max 2 or 3 to learn the layout and how the maps work. Sure, you thus get unlimited time but the maps will become stale and boring after a while and will learn that what is there is all that there is to offer.

At least with BF2 the modders themselves were able to make a level editor and such to pump out exciting new maps (for free), and even some were very good in comparison to stock ones. Same with CoD4, there were plenty of custom maps to play on the PC that kept the game alive and exciting without getting boring with old maps over and over. The fact that developers don't allow you to use some sort of tool to help create you own mp maps (even something remotely like forge would have been alright, i mean cmon) just plainly shows how they can be greedy and get rid of the competition that they might have with any sort of DLC.

I can't say you're wrong. I have to agree. But I find BF3 very fun and it only gets boring if I'm playing one mode and/or map for a long period of time. There's quite a bit of variety in it. And TDM never gets old.

    TDM...ew. Campfest supreme.

I like the Kharg/Firestorm/Caspian rotation more than any others. Caspian sucks, but in my experience it's better than playing a B2K rotation where it seems to invariably devolve into one team utterly destroying the other instead of the more desirable tug-of-war scenario.

    As a side:

Tonight, I just went 38 and 2 with an Abrahms on Firestorm, knocking out all aircraft and enemy armour. This is the first time I have ever done something like this. It was disgustingly awesome. Those 30436 points awarded were well-earned. This kind of stuff is what makes the Battlefield formula satisfying to play. When you get good with a weapon, you can work magic.

They were. They just made the mistake of coming in at very shallow angles. I also had some intermittent SOFLAM assistance.
