    Re: Bungie's Destiny

My one worry for this game is that there won't be a set protagonist and we'll be playing as something like Spartan III's and IV's -- dime-a-dozen soldiers with no personality or characteristics that define them as special. I think you could come up with the most creative and engaging world, but if you don't have that face to put on it, you don't really have a franchise.

How long has it been since Jason Jones put his name on a project, anyway? Since Halo 2?

I'm pretty sure post-Halo2 is when Jason started actually planning/working on Destiny.

Yeah, Harold Ryan has been the guy leading the charge with Bungies Halo games since halo 3. Jasons last Halo game was Halo 2 and we all know how that development went.

Yeah, but Jones was gone during most of Halo 2's development. If he were actively there, helping with development, Halo 2 would have been infinitely better for it.

With him spearheading this project, my hopes are high.

Jason effectively laid out the ground plans for Halo 2 as I recall, one of the Vidocs mentioned he locked himself away in his office for days on end and came back out with a large book full of things to do in Halo 2.

He did do groundwork, yes, but if I recall correctly from the Halo 3 Dev Commentary, he was gone for a long period of time while the team developed Halo 2. He wasn't able to lead the project for some reason. He was physically away from the office for a long time (and so was Harold Ryan if I remember right). Halo 2 had little traction after the Mombassa E3 presentation. Without their fearless leader to drive them forward, development hit a wall.

That's why, with Jones fully behind this game, I am looking forward to it.

Well, the office structure has changed significantly since then to reduce the impact of no leadership. They have an absurd amount of people dedicated to production making sure artists and engineers are working on useful things and kept up to date.

Harold Ryan didn't take over for Jason Jones, he took over for Pete Parsons, who took over for Alex Seropian. Studio manager is the guy that handles the operation of the studio. Jones is more of a creative director type of role. With 343, the two-headed monster of Kiki/Frankie is their Harold Ryan while Josh Holmes is their Jason Jones.

The weird thing is that Halo 3 either didn't have a project lead or Jason didn't want to be credited. ODST was headed by Staten, while Reach was led by Lehto.

Hopefully, that mercurial bastard still has the touch. It could turn out that he's the Howard Hughes of gaming and the past 8 years have been a descent into madness. Either way, I'm on board.

Some of you seem to forget that Jason is not only the co-founder of Bungie, but a programmer. I have not idea where you got this idea that he was "physically away from the office"
