A mosin is a pretty good choice. The ammo is cheap, the action and sights are simple, and the rifles are cheap too. You can expect accuracy to be inconsistent between rifles. I've seen rifles that were real dogs, and some that shot excellently. It really depends on the gun.
I wouldn't hunt with it. The hunting ammo selection for them sucks, and the rifle is long/cumbersome/heavy to pack into the field for long periods of time.
If you want to buy from a store, I suggest looking around for local gun stores and going inside.
If you want to buy online, I suggest going to AIMsurplus. They sell them for a very good price, they'll help you with an FFL transfer, and I've only heard great things about the quality of the rifles they sell.
If you buy from there, I also suggest ordering a pair of the ammo spam cans they sell. That'll be about $220 bucks or so after shipping. If you buy one, it doesn't come with the can opener, which are hard to find on their own.
