Ordered my first Mosin (a 91/30 from AIM with the laminate stock) and a 880 round crate of ammo.

Should come in a couple weeks. Gonna be fun.

    Ammo came:

    7.62x54R, 8x57mm, 7x57mm, .30-06

E: Rifle came, soaked in cosmoline of course. Anyone have expertise on cosmoline removal? I'm planning on doing it Friday.

WD-40! Have used it successfully in the past.

Just like, spray it onto the metal parts and wipe it off? I was planning to use a plastic tub and pour boiling water over the disassembled metal parts.

I tried the boiling water thing, it was a mess and overall a pain in the ass. Biggest thing was the water didn't stay hot enough, long enough, for me to clean everything off. Went into the garage, got some WD-40, sprayed it on and it whipped clean off. The thicker globs just dripped off. Got the idea from several other gun boards. Technically WD-40 is also a rust preventative but wouldn't hurt to give the whole rifle a good cleaning after you get the cosmoline off and coat it in a light treatment of oil.

What's the theory as far as the wood goes? I've heard all kinds of things, and decided to use mineral spirits after all things were considered.

    Re: Modacity shooters' thread

Took the cosmoline off, then played hooky from studying to drive up to the mountains and fire it.

Used WD-40 (thanks Penguin!) on all the exterior metals, and used carburetor cleaner to remove the cosmoline from the bore. Just rubbed some mineral spirits along the wood to try and get it off that, which worked but not to the dramatic effect I was hoping. Dipped all the small bits in a boiling pot of water as well and that got some more out,

Thing shot very very straight at about 50 yards. If I'd been using good technique, I could have probably shot two inches, but I wasn't caring about grouping and was just shooting an 8x18 inch box. Hit every time as long as I did my part. Had some cosmoline bleeding out of the wood and the bolt after a while, which I wiped off carefully and continued usage. Only problem was a bit of sticky bolt (wouldn't close at times), and a few failures to cock (happened twice in twenty rounds).

Only got to shoot twenty rounds because I accidentally grabbed my GI can of shot shells instead of the one I am storing my 7.62R ammo in, but 20 was enough. Cleaned the bore after shooting and put it in a case. Great gun, and I can't wait to shoot it some more.

I've had mine for almost 6 years, and was scrubbed clean when I got it. On super hot days after a handful of rounds my stock starts to ooze too. Just small drops but it happens.

Seems like a decent buy. Sounds better than most Century AK's and more affordable than an Arsenal one
