Well that's fine considering you said you've only got a laptop now. If you get a desktop in the future though you'll definitely have no excuse unless you already have the consoles.
I don't get people who already have a desktop that's capable of being a half-decent gaming PC with nothing but an upgraded/added discrete GPU and maybe some memory. Easily doable for that same $400 - $600 budget. Although if you've already got the consoles, I guess you've locked yourself in for another cycle from the financial-practicality perspective.
I'm done with consoles forever unless something durastic changes with the PC gaming scene or consoles obtain the ability to use multiple input methods (specifically keyboards and mice natively). Biggest thing that turns me away from consoles is the clunky controllers.

This has always been the case, nothing has changed. PC has always been the better option in the long run.
