Thanks for the post. To me, it's only the confirmation of lame design choices (like Win XP officially not supported).
Did you get any "official" reaction to this letter?
Ha what a lovely cause from the letter. :D
I have'nt been on these forums for a little while and was wondering did the letter ever get a responce?
Don't think so.
Yeah. An unofficial response from a Hired Gun employee saying the support for the game has been ditched and the team has broken up and moved on to other projects. This is just to give you a taste of how microsoft will be handling Halo titles in the future without bungie.
ugh, you people
Korny, are you upset about this thread getting bumped?
:/
Although, Maybe Microsoft has learned their lesson...
Fat. Chance.
:(
no, just some people's ignorance on the subject and their ability to get carried away :/
If your so much in pain by ignorance, then enlighten us with what we're missing.
just continue to blame just microsoft and we'll all live happily ever after, the end, kk
You know. Halo 2 Vista pisses me the fuck off GRRGGG >: (
Well, the good news is is that Micro$oft will realize how big of a colossal failure H2V was and hopefully make Halo 3 for the PC as a reconciliation and much better than H2V or even HCE ever were. H2V has so much wasted potential to it. I hate it when companies (mainly publishers) focus on what multiplayer online experience IS instead of what could be MADE out of the multiplayer online experience by the users. What do I mean by experience? That totally depends on what experience you're being "cheated" on, such as what was mentioned in the article.
I've heard too much negativity from H2V from a lot of people and already declared it being on Vista to be an absolutely waste or loss of point. It could have easily ran on XP (hell if GoW can) and H2's graphics weren't even anywhere near that good. Sure, they are juicier than the Xbox's graphics, but what difference does that make that the "filter" is a bit darker than on Xbox. EVERYTHING looks better in a darker "filter" than it does in a lighter one. Now, if they made it with FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE settings and FULLY CUSTOMIZABLE HEK, then that would easily overcome the graphics and maybe the need to waste another $150 on Vista. The fact is, like Halo3 (even though Halo3 is awesome), H2V was just another pawn in the Micro$oft marketing campaign. Since H3 on 360 is offtopic, I won't go into that, but H2V was pretty much just a lure for people to buy Vista to play the nuked Xbox classic. Microsoft has officially failed as a publisher for games with even more recent news of copying the Wii's retarded avatar system. Like everything Microsoft has touched, future UI's will be called "user friendly," but in the end will be just as confusing as the meaning itself.
At least H2V has some good features going for it, like a basic HEK and map making system (which really doesn't matter due to needing to have a bloody expensive modeling program), but it is completely nuked by the fact that MS didn't allow more to be done with it. Why should a release date influence there release of a remake of a game, especially for the generally accepting audience of PC gamers? Why couldn't Microsoft hire Gear Box and Gamespy to take care of the server and HEK? Why do I see a constant decline in the use classic Microsoft themes? There is update and there is downgrade. I believe H2V was downgraded from HCE. Of course, this is what I have heard and gathered through observation. I don't own H2V because of Vista. Either way, this is really a huge argument against MS and how the once good publisher has turned corrupt with their desire for money and deception. I hate it when good things go to waste.
tldr version:
I feel bad that he wasted all his time typing that out when nobody cares :|Quote:

sorry for this but...

I think everyone has a right to complain.
Wait uhhh....
What?
Does this mean that the product is still supported? Or does it mean that when support expires, there is a chance that the game will never work after future Windows updates?
By "Mainstream Support" I think they might mean just basic technical support, like how they tell you to call some 800 number if it breaks your computer or something, as well as what jcap said.
No matter the case, Hired Gun's been long disbanded, and Bungie's busy with Reach and whatever the hell their next project is. There's no more support in the form of patches and tweaks, unless Microsoft Game Studios gets assigned to is somehow, which I doubt considering that instead of advertising Halo 2 Vista when they shut down XBO Live, they told everyone to play Reach instead.
Don't forget 343i
How do you find that anyways?
I don't take credit in finding that.
Generally, they don't have specific definitions of the Mainstream support they will provide for different products, but I'm sure some can be translated into gaming support =D
It's quite sad, 5 years, and it was only supported in the 1st year.
Mainstream Support
Mainstream Support is the first phase of the product support lifecycle.
At the supported service pack level, Mainstream Support includes:
- Incident support (no-charge incident support, paid incident support, support charged on an hourly basis, support for warranty claims)
- Security update support
- The ability to request non-security hotfixes

Don't forget Halo 1 PC/CE was abandoned, but that was until someone had the initiative and good luck on his side,
sawnose actually volunteered to provide security updates, no matter how small they are, a game that had no developers working on it.
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=1951
1.08 was released within this mainstream support, however, 1.09 was released a month after =O
Source of information is right here.

There another thing I wonder, 1year after Halo 1 PC's support has been ended, can Microsoft release the source code?
:iamafag:
so true besides the unlocked h2ek is the real thing its the damn compiler i say that they fucked us over on
"H2EK" refers to the whole editing kit package, which includes Guerilla, Sapien, and Tool ("compiler" according to you). It is far from the "real thing" that we were shown before release. Sure an unlocked Guerilla is useful to some people, but we are extremely limited by the other tools.
what were we shown
There is a video that show Warthogs (on an MP map) playing a type of Soccer with the huge ball from SP.
At a minimum that takes proper collision and perhaps the ability to use items/objects/scenery/models from SP. Why would they promise us this and then rip it away? Do not answer that. I'm just giving you an example.
we can do that we just need to figure out i,j,k,d demension's and put um in
You really have no clue what you are talking about. We cannot compile any render models, collision models, physics models, or animations, the four most important tags for custom assets. We can "upgrade" a few of them from their Halo 1 counterparts, but that is something people in the community have done. In the video, it specifically mentioned the ability to build assets, which we cannot do.
Kantanomo, this is visual evidence of what we were "supposed" to be doing.
Something like, the soccer version of CTF or Assault, (this would've been a hit on H2V if it were allowed).
the thing is that is fully possible to do you just need to do it manualy hell if i had the time i would put it in myself but i dont know how to read or figure out i,j,k coord system
You say that is fully possible, yet you cant do it. What the heck are you basing your assumptions from? I havent see anyone else do it, so the only rational thought process is to use your own abilities, which as you've already said you do not know. Your talking rubbish.
i am working on it... entering data by hand sorta is slow TLYK
So you opened 03b_newmombasa using gravemind, and you are copying the values from the "scenarios\objects\solo\earthcity\soccer_ball\socc er_ball.collision_model" tag into a brand new collision model tag in Guerilla. That is hardly custom, as you have no clue what those values actually do, and would not be able to create a completely new collision model from scratch. Also, there are hidden fields in that tag that you cannot access, which means the tag will not work properly, or at all for that matter.
One more thing, don't try and deny what I said and say this is a completely custom tag. I extracted the tag into H2V tag format using my program, had the same exact values that you have displayed.
i know how it works it uses the x y z values on a grid and the point of the i j k is were the planes meet case closed d is direction
and for the missing pieces i have a idea for that too
im taking the soccer ball to make that thing in the video okay so kthnx bai
You sure d isnt the plane equation, or the intersection point of the ray, or the normal of the plane? Do you even know how BSP trees work?
Also, you will all need to do this again for the render BSP planes.
this thread is :ugh:
yeah i know i will like i said it is a long process :ugh:
did you know that collision models were imported to there "tool" with a jms file O.o
Code:tool release pc 02.09.04.09422 Sep 4 2004 04:18:15 Sat Sep 04 04:35:26 2004 zachr 1.3 secs data\objects\weapons\grenade\plasma_grenade\collision\plasma_grenade_collision.jms
well some people didnt know *sad face*
I was able to get a sphere (of any size) to bounce like a ball. I can also stick a large shield box on the front of a vehicle and drive around with it. It is extremely easy to increase the size of an existing render_model. So yes, editing values by hand can work to some degree.
My latest "Box Shield" has an invisible box inside of a sphere. The box only stops munitions and nades bounce off of it. A fired Rocket will come to a halt but the explosion will still damage you if you are within its damage radius. So, using what I have we have a semi-decent Bubble Shield.
To make it more accurate I need to increase the size of an existing spherical collision_model (and its physics_model) such as the Plasma Grenade. I have attempted this a few times. It must be possible, the issue I run into is that the working examples I have studied are from Halo 3 and while the fields are mostly similar, I do not understand what some Halo 2 values mean or how to modify them without breaking them.
Does anyone know what the e means in a value such as this 3.40282e+038? And if so, how do I multiply such a value by 2?
kills on the collision model and stuff for the plasma grenade only change the D which is the distance from center leave everything else same
the E is most likely a scintific exponent so it may mean 3.40282x10^38
The "e" denotes scientific notation in a floating-point value. Basically when you see that, you multiply the decimal number by that many powers of 10. So, 3.40282e+38 = 3.40282 x 10^38, or 34,028,200,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 .
Simply multiply the decimal number (before the e) by 2. If the result would be greater than 10, move the decimal place over by one to the left, drop the last decimal place, and increase the e value by 1.
TY for the detailed explanation, that is exactly what I needed.
First test; I multiplied the Vertice Points by 10 (in the Plasma Nade Collision_Model) and it was successful. xD
The collision was closer to the size of a basketball, however, the Plasma Nade does not have a Physics_Model after all and I modify an existing Physics_Model to make my shield function. I may have to use the Assault Bomb instead.
Further progress
It makes me smile to know that people haven't entirely given up on H2V. People should have some detailed letter somewhere about all of the problems in H2V so we all know what needs fixing. :P
not funneh :P
I noticed, Halo 2 Vista loads alot slower compared to Halo 1, why is this?
I take it you also like poking dead animals with sticks Shock?
This horse ain't dead until it's been rode on.
H2V DOES allow you to play only with your friends, and family or w/e only.
It's called Party Privacy, set to Invite Only.
When this game was first released, there were a bunch of bullshit limitations on LIVE Free members, including the inability to host listen servers or set party privacy. A while ago, when they finally figured out that wasn't working out (which was long after they killed the game with a bunch of bad decisions), they lifted the LIVE Gold restrictions.
Oh, thanks for pointing that out.
Considering this topic is pinned and this forum is virtual decayed, I thought I might as well post a funny thing I did the other day:
I though "Hey, maybe I should check out what Windows LIVE Marketplace is like" after being on Steam a while. I had always played Fallout 3 PC on Windows LIVE, but never thought to check out the Marketplace. So I go and was generally displeased. The loading was slow, it seemed very choppy, and the functionality wasn't smooth, but rather inconsistent. I see this 'feedback' button in the corner of the screen though and am like "Okay, I think I'll give some feedback that'll probably be dismissed." Now, another reason why I went to the LIVE Marketplace was to see if they had H2V on it for Download (because Steam obviously did not). Well, the LIVE Marketplace didn't, so here is what I wrote for the comment at the bottom underneath the aforementioned problems:
"Please put Halo 2 Vista/Windows 7 back on the Marketplace with the completely unlocked Editing Kit."
Then send. They now know what we want. It's in their feedback mailbox. Now they can't say someone didn't try.
lololololololol
They don't want to put it on the marketplace because some people have problems with the game on Windows 7 :p
Yeah, I believe a re-release is in order. I'm positive we all do.
Speaking of which, I've been hearing that H2V as it is now is FAR different in terms of fixes and support than it was when it was released. Is this exactly true? Is H2V still bad for multiplayer? What about the Campaign?
One major factor is join lag. That is (as it sounds) when another player joins and that causes you to lag. I mention this because it was not a factor when H2V MP was gold users only (pay to play). I believe it has to do with MS scaling back the servers and changing the Live back-end. Join lag can take your ping to red or yellow, and what the hell are red and yellow anyways? We want numbers.
G4WL is terrible, still crashes sometimes when using the Live guide. And that guide, it was so much better pre-patched, they continue to devolve its functionality. I'm not a big Steam fan (though not a hater either) but at least they know how to make a game-overlay without killing your system's resources.
MS cares not about hackers, crashers or other malicious players.
Another annoyance is how that when you are downloading a map the game does not show your percent complete to the other players. Or how you cannot download the map if the game has started and have no way of knowing until you join which them causes the previously mentioned join-lag for the players who are actually in-game.
Also related; they limit us to ~47-50 custom maps and after that point there is no warning; a new map will download and at about 99% it will freak out and start the dl over again. If you have one user who cannot download the map this kills the chances of that custom server ever starting which goes back to the percentage issue previously mentioned.
Campaign is never as fun without the option to play co-op. H2V is also missing the whole built in clans and stats tracking from the Xbox version. And now that they are remaking Headlong in the Reach engine, well they are already dipping into Halo 2 assets when I thought it was supposed to be all about the first Halo.
Halo 2 Vista - Bastard Child Edition
"First introduced in Halo 2, the map is set within the New Mombasa locale."
Headlong is not part of Halo the first, nor is New Mombasa. AFAIK the New Mombasa location was introduced in Halo 2/ODST/Halo 3. Whereas Halo Combat Evolved was on the first Halo. Have no idea about the books but then I wouldn't read a book about the Quake/DOOM back-story either.
Call of Duty is made and released every year along-side the next being pumped out for the next year. Some of the same teams are involved. That does not equate to Black Ops assets being intended Modern Warfare 2 just because they were created during the same time period.
If you have some evidence of these claims I would love to see it.
All they meant is that the concept for the layouts and gameplay came back from Halo 1's design phase but didn't get put into an actual game till Halo 2.
kind of like the Mongoose
Now we just need an online coop day. Then we can sail this ship and give up on h2v :D
I hope Jo Clowes is doing well.
I forgot what a great post this is, bravo
They never gave a fuck, never will.
Fuck 'em.
