35 Categories of Gamers

Righto, this is born of an idea Snaf and I had earlier today, and has turned into a massive list of different types of gamers. I may have missed a few categories, but I couldn't come up with anything more than what I have here. I decided to list the categories and spoiler the descriptions, as otherwise this first post would be completely traumatic to have to read in one go. Some of them are pretty harsh, but just remember, it's all in good fun (and from personal observation) :D

1) The PC Gamer

PC gamers are the type of people to shell out massive amounts of money in order to keep their system up to par with the current generation of PC games. They are diehard fans of the system, and are often seen battling with console gamers about which system is superior. They are avid users of the keyboard and mouse, and can pull of maneuvers that console games can only dream of. Usually placing high importance on the visual fidelity of the game their playing, they take pride in the PC's ability to have customizable settings. They are not necessarily better than console gamers, but they have a noticeably better online community than consoles. Most PC gamers seem to have a higher level of respect for the games, and they definitely seem more willing to work with others and actually enjoy the game, instead of having to get purely competitive. You will likely see far more “good games” in the post-match lobby than you will see on consoles.

2) The Console Gamer

Console gamers are profoundly different from PC gamers in many cases, primarily in attitude. Console gamers will spend large sums on the base console, and little on peripherals, with no need for system upgrades. With the new generation of games, they are willing to spend $60 on console games that you can purchase on PC for $10 cheaper, as they know their console can handle it. The difference in attitude primarily takes place when playing online. This is especially noticeable on Xbox Live, where a disturbingly high percentage of gamers fall into the less unseemly of the below categories. Many seem to be in it only to win, many others disrespect the game and the players, and others are pure jerks. While this is found on PC, a higher percentage seem to be on consoles. Console gamers are also adamant about the consoles they own, and are often scene in massive flame wars promoting their system, and discussing the inferiority of others. For some reason, console gamers appear to be much harsher when putting down other consoles, and often attack those who defend their console of choice.

3) The Newbie

This is the guy who knows the basics of what he's doing, but doesn't grasp the more refined aspects of gameplay. They're somewhat competent, and you'll definitely see them help, but unfortunately, they often have a very annoying attitude, sometimes bordering on elitist. They know they're newbies, and they're very quick to let people know that they're just learning the game. This doesn't make them any less annoying however, and it can really take a toll on a person's nerves to see the newbie do something completely idiotic, and use “I'm new to the game” as an excuse. The best thing to do here is tolerate them, as getting angry at them or blocking them will simply make them angrier down the road.

4) The Preschooler

This is the kid who plays games he is way too young for, and everyone knows it, whether he wants that or not. You can generally detect them with their nasally, pre-pubescent vocal tones, but if that fails, then you can definitely tell by listening to and watching how they act in the game. More often than not, they barely know what they're doing, and in this day and age, much to the disdain of their mothers, they're also the most likely to be heard replacing every other word with curses.

5) The Self-Preservationist

This one is fairly self explanatory. You'll find these guys hanging out in the back of the crowd, concerned only for their own health meter, regardless of whether that interferes with team strategy and survival. They'll participate in battle, but they will avoid getting in the thick of things, preferring to hang back on the sidelines. Finally, they'll often find themselves the center of attention...but not for the reason they may want.

6) The Sadist

Overtly enjoys massacring the enemy force, and will go to any lengths to do so. He proudly makes it known that he WILL take his enemy down, even if it means he goes with them. Selfish and proud, they will disregard their team for their own thrills. While they may be of some use in a deathmatch game, don't expect to see them helping out in Capture the Flag.

7) The Coward

This guy is much like the Self-Preservationist, but in a worse way. You'll find these guys hiding in dark corners, far and away from any possible risk of battle. If you see one participate in battle, it's a rare occurrence, and probably a last resort on their part. They will do everything they can to let everyone else on their team do the work. Don't even think about cooperative games with these guys.

8) The Sonofabitch

True abominations of gaming, these are the worst players you can find. They will do everything in their power to make everyone else pissed off or miserable, and they get immense thrills in doing so. Teamkilling is high on the charts, but they can also be found telling the enemy where to expect ambushes, spamming the chat fields with drivel, running around aimlessly, and generally being dicks. Muting them barely helps, as they will find other ways to keep you occupied. Make sure to ban them fast, but if you are unable to, get as far away as possible. They are of little to no use in the game, and their only purpose is to disrespect the craft and piss you off.

9) The Tactician

These players are generally some of the more intelligent participants in battle. They'll do their best to organize their team to the best possible strategic positions. They make great leaders, and can often lead your team to victory...assuming the others listen to him.

10) The Scholar

Knows a disturbingly high level of information about a given game. If you need to know the games history, level design, weapon placement, enemy spawn rates, anything you could possibly think of, these guys know it. While useful when it comes to getting the drop on an enemy you didn't know the location of, these tiresome obsessives of the craft will quickly become annoying, trying to tell everyone everything that they know.

11) The MMO Guy

There is generally nothing wrong with these players, but it'd be wrong to say that they fit in with all other gamers. They have a lot of time on their hands, as is evidenced by their player stats. World of Warcraft is popular among these enthusiasts, and they never grow tired of discussing their ingame achievements. The only issue is that sometimes they won't stop talking, making themselves increasing annoying to those around them.

12) The Profag

These guys play games for one reason, and one reason only: to win. They spend absurd amounts of time learning the ins and outs of a game, and have no doubts about their own superiority. Elitists to the extreme, they will constantly let everyone know how good they are, and how everyone below them isn't. While they may be superb players, capable of achieving great feats, their social skills are subpar at best, and will often order subordinates to blindly follow them. If you don't follow them, you are immediately on their bad side, and will earn their disdain in a manner both harsh and sudden. Put simply, they're megalomaniacs, and unless you're at their skill level or close to it, don't expect to be treated well.

13) The Leroy Jenkins

There is no strategy with these guys. They will bum rush the enemy, without regard for personal or team safety. Their assaults consist of run and gun, with little to no prior planning. They generally die often, and in doing so, screw over their teammates.

14) The Cheater

Simply enough, these players use hacks and game exploits for personal gain. Not only does this deface the developers, but it also pisses off other players who are trying to play fair. Unfortunately, even with the sophisticated anti-cheating systems we have today, we can't squash them all out. Do your best to find these players as soon as possible and boot them from your game.

15) The Wannabe

Put simply, these players suffer from False Identity Syndrome. You'll hear em trash-talkin like the best, but when it comes to actually playing the game, it's quickly apparent that they are barely average. Don't let them get to you.

16) The Tourettes Guy

Their conversation primarily consists of curse words, oftentimes for no justifiable reason. You'll hear them cursing while giving orders, killing someone, getting killed, and overall, just for the hell of it. It is often best to mute them, lest you suffer through a cavalcade of inane screaming.

17) The Racist

You'll find these people more often than you would like to, especially on Xbox Live. They'll scream racist epithets frequently, and will often discuss their hatred of a particular race. Muting them is the only guaranteed safety, but not before some damage has been done.

18) The Stealther

Opting for a sneaky approach before going in guns blazing, the stealthers will often place importance on strategy, rather than firepower. They have no issue with lying in wait for minutes at a time, waiting for a single perfect shot that could change the game right around. They also do a good job when it comes to finding enemy weaknesses. They will often scope out enemy formations, and try to predict where they're going in order to set up a potent ambush. More often than not, you'll see them wielding silenced weapons and sniper rifles, but you can also see them with assault weapons, sneaking into the enemy base. However, in non-shooting games, you'll see them taking advantage of cover and high vantage points in order to accomplish their objectives. Very useful when trying to organize a strategic assault.

19) The Heavy Weapons Whore

Their only objective in the game is to get the biggest, strongest weapons, and forget everyone else. It doesn't matter if they're piss poor at utilizing it, they just want it. Whether it's the lone sniper rifle, the rocket launcher, or the tank, they will abandon all other tasks just to get their hands on it, leaving more qualified players in the dust, often to the degradation of the team.

20) The Item Whore

These players will run immediately for the nearest powerups, leaving nothing behind for their enemies...or allies. They care about their own power, and in cooperative games, they will leave their teammates high and dry by taking all the health and ammo they can find. They're incredibly selfish, but are also walking tanks when wielded by the right people. Pray they know what they're doing, but nobody would blame you for being tempted to give them a swift smack to the back of the head for being conceited pricks.

21) The Vehicle Whore

Much like item and heavy weapon whores, they rush right for the goods. Leaving no time for anyone else, they'll run and nab the strongest vehicle they can find, and begin wreaking havoc. Occasionally useful, but often annoying, you don't have much chance at piloting your favorite vehicle when these guys are around. Try to tolerate them, but remember that it's understandable to be supremely pissed off.

22) The Pilot

Pilots. There are good ones, and bad ones. The good ones are the people you will find yourself calling for aid in Battlefield to take down enemy emplacements, and will generally be of great benefit to your team. On the other hand, there are a vast number of completely inexperienced pilots, who will often waste the vehicle in an attempt to screw around in the skies, hoping to kill someone else. God help you and your team if a newbie grabs the aircraft.

23) The Boss

You know these guys. They get a thrill from telling everyone else what to do, even if their strategy is wrong. They do not listen to the suggestions of others, and will put down anyone who does not get in line behind them. They do not tolerate insubordination, and will show their distaste for your rebellious act in a number of ways, including team-killing, abandonment, and at the highest level, booting you from the game.

24) The Complainer

These incessant talkers have very little to say that's useful. They are always finding fault with the game or their teammates, and it becomes unbearable very fast. Nobody really wants to hear someone going on and on about the faults of a game while playing it, and they certainly don't want to be complained about for doing something stupid or accidental. These people are very tiresome, and apparently find no joy in playing video games. Muting them will be your only way to tolerate their existence in the match.

25) The Necrophiliac

Also known as the “Compulsive Corpse Humper,” you'll often find these guys doing the nasty with the deceased polygonal corpses of their fallen adversaries. It is unknown if these peculiar denizens of gaming get some weird, perverted thrill from this act, or whether it's simply their maturity which has taken a nose dive. Give them a wide berth.

26) The Idler

Among some of the more worthless in gaming, these gamers (if you can call them that) will often be found standing there. Just standing there. They won't tell anyone what they're doing or what they ran off to, and they won't have the decency to simply quit the game and let another player take his place. Instead, they'll put themselves into an area where they think they'll be safe, and will disappear for an unknown period of time, leading to intense frustration of the other players. They are known for having some of the highest ban rates in gaming.

27) The Clueless Guy

Far worse than newbies, these players don't know what the hell they're doing at any stage. They will wander off aimlessly, never know what the objective is, and will have piss-poor accuracy ratings in any shooting game. Don't expect them to follow a team strategy either. Anything you tell them has a 90% chance of failure, and when you get mad, they will turn into “The Complainer.”

28) The Oldfag

There's nothing inherently wrong with this category. These guys have been around since gaming started, or close to it. Long have they played games with decency and respect for the craft, and are one of the few who can call themselves true gamers. Despite this, they are not guaranteed to be top players, but when you're looking for someone who plays the game purely for enjoying it, you can certainly count on them for that.

29) The Recreationist

Also known as casual gamers, these players are decidedly average when it comes to gameplay, but they're here simply to have fun. There's nothing wrong with these players, and they'll often come to your aid when you need it. Just don't expect them to have the highest score by the end of the match.

30) The Techie

Constantly bragging about themselves, they find profound joy in discussing their gaming setup, and all the cool gadgets they own. Talking about monitor size, peripheral brand are common, and it becomes unbelievably annoying because none of it holds any relevance in the game. Telling them to shut up won't help, because they'll quickly return it by discussing the obvious inferiority of your system. Like many others, muting them is the only solution.

31) The Collector

There are two variants of this gamer. One has every version of every game ever made. The other has everything relating to games they enjoy. They'll get the collectors edition, the books, the action figures, everything you could possibly think of. Don't expect them to be incredible at whatever game you're playing, but if you want to stand in awe at physical Altars to gaming, then look to these players first.

32) The Audiophile

Among the more annoying players in online games, they love music. They REALLY love music, and they want everyone to know it. They'll put their headsets right next to their speakers, allowing everyone to hear whatever piece of drivel they have in the stereo at the time. Nobody wants to hear music they don't like while playing a game, but these guys couldn't care less. In fact, they thrive on hearing other's complaints. Mute them immediately.

33) The Role Player

These guys put RPG elements into any game they play. Shooters, casual games, whatever. You'll find them founding guilds, making up ranks, and other such activities. Their skill level varies, but finding one with a good social life is a rarity.

34) The Man With a Grudge

Whether for revenge of for the hell of it, these players will find one opponent and track them mercilessly, regardless of their team. They will stalk their chosen player to the end of the map, and if their in the middle of a battle, they will pick one person and stick to them, much like the enemy artificial intelligence in Call of Duty 5.

35) The Beggar

By far some of the most annoying players, they want what they want, and by Christ do they want you to know it. You'll hear them at the start of every match, asking for you to stand by while they grab their weapon of choice. It doesn't matter if someone else wants it, THEY want it, and that's what counts. Most of the time, they'll suck horribly at using it, but it doesn't matter, so long as it's in their hands. As if that wasn't annoying enough, if you disobey them and grab the weapon for yourself, they will have no qualms about pestering you through the com, or even going so far as to betray you and take it for themselves.

I'm a PC gamer, Stealther, Recreationist, Man with a Grudge, and I used to be a scholar for some Halo 2 maps (splitscreen on console). I might be a Sadist, but I'm not good enough.

I'd say Recreationist describes me the most, though I used to be a complainer. Mostly it was "no fair, people with better frame rates and higher resolutions always WIN :(". Then I realized that gaming is for fun, so the Recreationist has taken over.

1, 9, 10, 16, 18, and occasionally 8.

I won't count pilot, since you really can't do anything else in Il-2

1, 11, 18, and 28-30, minus the talking in whatever category has it. Also, I take offense to 32's title. XP

I'm a lot of those, but I can proudly say that i'm an oldfag. Hell, I still have an atari (original, not the new shit) in my closet, and can say that my favorite game of all time is Zelda OoT just because of it's amazing storyline(inb4 amazing graphics back in the day).

You forgot the part where many die-hard PC gamers are stuck up pricks who like waving their fat wads of cash in front of peoples faces before blowing them on more PC parts that will be obsolete in a year or two <_<

1, 9, 10 on most of my games, 18, occasionally 25, and 28.

PC gaming is superior. Sadly, everyone's on a console these days so nobody knows what good gaming is anymore :gonk:

PC gamer (excpet the latest hardware bit vOv), occasionally the sadist (snipers :snafubar:), sometimes the tactician (I used to be like that in halo actually), the better half of the scholar (I only tell them what they ask), Leeroy when I play spy (except I pwn everyone and go out in a blaze of glory opening the door for imminent victory :iamafag:), vehicle whore (ghostbansheehog), the clueless guy (DOTA) and Man with a grudge (snipers :cheeseargh:).

Most types I must be the most hardcore gamer woo :smugsome:

But I think you missed a class:

The developer: the guy who knows how games work and isn't afraid to flaunt that knowledge in the middle of a fight. Often blames a missed shot on a "collision error" or netcode problems, knowing full well that no one else in the server knows or cares what he's talking about.

I got one:
The Ninja: The guy who always hides in a spot that is difficult/impossible to get to, and often will sneak up on large amounts of enemies at one time, using ninja trickery to quickly lead to the demise of all of them, without anyone else noticing.

You should add this one:

The sprinter

Often running around shooting at random people.
Right before you die you go run off and hide somewhere.
You just explore everything in the level.
You never kill anything or anyone.

Tactician on CTF, CP, Power struggle, Search & destroy, etc. Sadist on death-match or any gametype with the main objective of killing, and a Pc and Console gamer.

E: and the oldfag, I didn't see that one.

1, 2, 28, and I'm afraid to say a bit of 10.

I'm more of a 2 than a 1, and for 2 I don't use my headset (If I don't have something to scream into, I don't).

I only consider myself a 28 because I've experienced everything on that list... way too freakin much. This is also the reason why I don't wear a headset anymore.

The Rage-Quitter
Complete jackasses, these players will quit at any point in the game if they feel like either A) They're losing, or B) Their team will lose. They do not have the common decency to complete a game, and apparently dislike the experience of losing. Egocentric to the max, they feel that they are too good to lose, and if they're not in the winning position, it's someone else's fault. Unfortunately, there is no way to get rid of them, but they're still fair game to rant about during lull periods in the match.

I find these guys to be uncannily common in Left 4 Dead.

1, 5, and 18. Its all about sneaking up on someone and fucking em up with a shotgun, sniper, or any other cheap fag weapon. I'm a bit of a self-preservationist, as I really dont enjoy getting killed over and over again, but on some maps im a combo of 9,12, and 13, rushing in, using vehicles to break through lines, and using the Pistol/AR combo to profag it up.

The game ceases to be fun on either side if you're the only infected against 4 survivors, or the only survivor with 3 brain dead AIs against a full team of infected. Out of the games I finished, some were a few public ones where both sides actually stuck around, but most of them were games with some 2f2f buddies who actually stick around, and are a lot of fun to play with.

I've had a few absolutely golden games, but my net drops right as our team is really shining and it pisses me right off

e/ Ahhh, ragequitters... I kept picking some idiot off in CoD4 as he went to the exact same spot, after copping an eyeful of verbal abuse and killing him about 5 times, I had enough kills in a row for an airstrike... guess where I called it :haw:

Bullshit. I bought a 120 dollar GFX 2 years ago and I can still play all the games coming out at medium or high settings. TBQH most people already have PC's that can handle games if they just bought decent GFX cards. So why not buy the card thats a hundred bucks instead of a console thats 600 bucks (along with live play with a mountly fee map packs and updates that cost extra money and all sorts of extra charges M$ and Sony add on.)

You forgot The Twitch. You know, the people with godlike reflexes who can and will pick up the sniper rifle of the game they play and headshot ANYTHING that gets in their way, usually with no scope, regardless of how erratically they or their target is moving.

And also The Man With The Identity Crisis: The guy who picks up a weapon for the sole purpose of using it the way it was NOT meant to be used. People who use sniper rifles for point-blank headshots, handguns for sniping (not referring to the Halo pistol mmk), anti-vehicle weapons for anti-infantry purposes, etc. Usually done for the sake of irony; the killer will usually find it funny that they managed to kill someone the way they did.

I like to fall into the latter category when playing Halo 3 and use detatched turrets for use in close-quarters combat, and magnums on pretty much anything, though my skill in said situations is very random. Sometimes I will wipe the floor with everyone and other times I'll die before firing the first shot.

PC gaming is really stupid.
I wouldn't dish out a few grand just to get a pc that will be obsolete in a few months. Especialy with games being as advanced as they are today. It's really not worth it.

Yeah new shit comes out all the time, but game technologies often develop slower than hardware technologies, except in the cases of when a game is made for the sole purpose of supporting a new tech.

I bought my PC is 2001 i think and i had the best of everything that was available in the time. Only to find out that it is obsolete a year later.

I own an XBox 360 console, and I would say that it gets old way faster than the PC does. The main reason is the way online gaming works on the console. It based around short rounds and fast point earning, Not nearly as fun as the epic PC battles that can be had. Unfortunately, the PC I'm on at the moment has no capacity for gaming, and its really pissing me off.

It is a well known fact that PC gamers will spend large amounts of $$ in order to keep their PC up to date. Just because YOU didn't, doesn't mean everyone else follows that.

Consoles are far better. Unlike PC's they stay around for a good 4 or 5 years.

bought my computer 1 and a half years ago and i still play everything max

Righto, two things I need to know in order to understand your justification.

1) How old are you?
2) When did you start gaming?

I had a 5 year old PC that ran UT3 and Crysis well enough to bear, so please explain to me how PC's are no good for 4-5 years. Consoles are definitely powerful machines, but the problem is, the instant PC systems catch up to console power (which they did long ago), the console quickly becomes obsolete. Gears of War 2 seems to be the graphical height barrier on the Xbox 360, wheras PC gaming is always improving its technology.

Yes, I'm a PCfag, but not without good reason. If for nothing else, I consider PC gaming better because of 1) Ability to have Über high resolution games running at 60fps, and 2) A more entertaining, and respectful community.

And theirs always the fact that we get our wonderful kb/m :3

PCs and consoles have their places. I mean, the X360's hardware is certainly nowhere near the latest DX10 PC graphics cards and quad core Intels, but the X360 costs $199. To get a PC that runs COD4 at the same level of the performance as the 360, you'd have to shell out at least $400 assuming you build your own. PCs will always be ahead in terms of technology, but not everyone is overly concerned with it or can afford it.

so yeah imo PC isn't better than console, but console isn't better than PC either. They have different targets. Personally I favor the PC because most of my favorite shooter games are on it, but I'm also a regular console gamer. My friend plays both too but favors the console because it means he can play with his two brothers at the same time without having to take turns (split screen...).

A common argument is that the keyboard/mouse owns the gamepad - while that is certainly undisputable for shooters, the fact is that there are other genres of games out there. I'm definitely not keen on controlling Mario or Crash Bandicoot with a keyboard/mouse. I don't like using a keyboard in NFS as I can't handle as well as I'd like.

Also -- the upgrade for a PC is typically pretty cheap... most PCs can run games on fairly high settings with only a ~150$ videocard dumped it.

If Intel didn't release such horrid crap for videocards... PC gaming would be a LOT better off.

One thing people keep forgetting when they consider console gaming...

Edit: Oh right almost forgot -- besides being the obvious PC Gaming oldfag ((Whatup 80286!)) I'm the jackass... but in a unique way...

Basically I'm that dude who actually uses the environment against the enemy... throwing propane tanks against tanks in L4D versus (nailed the first tank in Dead Air last level with 2 while he was trying to chase down my teamates)... luring a tank down two halls, around a corner where I already placed a gas tank... hiding C4/RDX packs around bottlenecks to surprise people ((PROTIP: No-one looks up... I've successfully ''hid'' RDX packs in plain sight in 2142 by placing them on the ceilings of hallways))... circle strafing around a post in GTA4 when someone's trying to run me over

((REALLY effective by the way... they can't run you down and their aim/guns are crap from inside the vehicle... just keep them going around the pole until you decide to strike))
