why, you can only use the CD/DVD key 3 times, then you have to call M$.
:/ I hope, cause I'd hate to find that out the hard way, and when I get a new laptop I'm just going to buy me a 2nd copy of H2V.
I've reinstalled about five times now. Never had an activation problem.
......
i mean something like theghost made for halo 1.
i lost my case, and want to know my key.
There is no question of legality, KIWI, because if you own the CD key, and use a tool to recover it; then there would be no legal bindings that you could be pursued by.
Basically, you make a tool that has nothing to do with modifying/redistributing paid/owned materials, and all it does is benefit the idea of backing up what you own, then there is no problem. For what I know, is Microsoft can't sue you for writing down your Product Code somewhere just to keep it secure.
Seeing as I'm totally anti-vista, I have no clue which registry key it is stored in, so could you take a look? :) If we know that, it might be possible to get original key :)
Edit:
I'd check
KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\
Look for DigitalProductID :D
You can't assume this, because you've never been contacted by Microsoft before. And yes, that was total assumption on my part, but something that allows you to recover your key as this thread implys would indeed NOT give someone an advantage towards stealing someone elses key, and if you were targeted by Microsoft for any legalities, you're in the clear, all you need is a lawyer to back you up, information from your IP about what you do, and then sue them back for time lost. You see? It's a win-win. Life may not always work that way, but hey, think positively and don't back down from the big hand that M$ has made itself to be.
Hmm, surely theres some thing, although you do assign it to your LIVE account dont you :)
The key seems to be registered over the internet instantaneously when entered. Of course this brings to mind that Microsoft could be the ones storing the key, rather than the user actually getting it stored on their personal computer. So perhaps there's more to it, such as generated code that signifys it's legitimate? Unique codes? And maybe this code doesn't even have the Product code.

PID is in there.
No offense KIWIDOGGIE but if you were really the programmer you brag to be, you wouldn't be taking so long, making excuses. and generally putting it off. It's already been done, it's legal.
I write all my game keys and names down in a word file and print it, so when one of my cases goes lost, I still have the key, no need for an app to find it (just a suggestion).
I just don't lose the case. That works wonders for me.
Not everyone owns a digital camera or camera phone.
Not everyone owns a scanner.
Both paths still lead to it getting lost. Shit happens, it'd be nice to have a piece of insurance, that's all.

Now, has anyone tried the decoding methods that appeared to have worked with any Microsoft PID Halo CE-era or earlier, or has Microsoft Changed PID encryption?
Lol +rep for you
odd, i just checked my bros pc..
only the last 2 digits were different.
Probably something to do with computer-specific hardware in the process.
I don't even own H2V, so I obviously don't even have a PID to play around with, but maybe if I bought the game or something and had an executable to play around with I could find how it decodes the PID to check the CD-Key.
Of course, if they just hash it or something... good luck getting that CD Key back.
