why, you can only use the CD/DVD key 3 times, then you have to call M$.

I'm pretty sure they remember the machine you installed it on...like windows...you can install it on max 2 different systems but I installed it like 4 times.

:/ I hope, cause I'd hate to find that out the hard way, and when I get a new laptop I'm just going to buy me a 2nd copy of H2V.

There is no question of legality, KIWI, because if you own the CD key, and use a tool to recover it; then there would be no legal bindings that you could be pursued by.

Basically, you make a tool that has nothing to do with modifying/redistributing paid/owned materials, and all it does is benefit the idea of backing up what you own, then there is no problem. For what I know, is Microsoft can't sue you for writing down your Product Code somewhere just to keep it secure.

Seeing as I'm totally anti-vista, I have no clue which registry key it is stored in, so could you take a look? If we know that, it might be possible to get original key

    Edit:

    I'd check

    KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft Games\

You can't assume this, because you've never been contacted by Microsoft before. And yes, that was total assumption on my part, but something that allows you to recover your key as this thread implys would indeed NOT give someone an advantage towards stealing someone elses key, and if you were targeted by Microsoft for any legalities, you're in the clear, all you need is a lawyer to back you up, information from your IP about what you do, and then sue them back for time lost. You see? It's a win-win. Life may not always work that way, but hey, think positively and don't back down from the big hand that M$ has made itself to be.
