yah, windows update simply DOES NOT restart your pc automatically, even if you have them install and everything.

if you have it set up a certain way it will give you a 5 minute countdown to restart, which is what I'm guessing happened.

Yeah, I have it set the same way, but it downloaded anyway, and restarted without warning. Now I remember why I hate Windows.
I'm running XP, btw.

i always get a pop up that lets me either click restart now, or postpone, 5 minutes being the default postpone time.

if you have it set up a certain way it will give you a 5 minute countdown to restart, which is what I'm guessing happened.

This is what I do to stop it. And it's really easy to remember how to do it so you don't have to look up the fix everytime you want to use it.

Actually, this is what you should do: Go to control panel, go to administrative tools, then services, then in teh list look for automatic updates, then right click it and click stop. Problem solved.
