IMO, the short was kind of pointless if you already played the game. For the people who haven't but were thinking about buying it, the film was probably a very effective way of persuading them into getting the game. The only thing I didn't really enjoy about it, was how rushed it felt - I realize they had a lot to put into a 22-minute segment though. Also, one thing that really bugged me was the fact that they portrayed Seth finding his treasure at Fort Mercer. It just seemed wrong considering the environment differed greatly between the fort and Tumbleweed.

    Re: Red Dead Redemption

so iv been playing this game nonstop, and i love it. the attention to detail is pretty incredible imo, for example when it rains the road fills up with puddles. at one point i actually watched a black smith pull a red hot horse shoe out of a fire, bang it with his hammer a few times, the drop it in a bucket of water. there was a steam effect and sound, and when he removed the horseshoe it wasnt red hot anymore. then he put another horseshoe in the fire and walked to the saloon fr a drink while it heated up. i was impressed.
as far as gameplay goes, this may just be my controller with its sticky sticks (i know), but sometimes the cover in combat doesnt work correctly. for example ill take cover behind a rock, then my guy will start walking circles around the rock. thats probably just my controller, but trying to counter-act the way the analog stick likes to stick up a bit causes me to walk back and forth while being shot at.
another thing that i can actually blame on the game is clunky controls in some areas. i mean all in all, the controls are a tiny bit awkward to get used to (x is jump, repeatedly tap a for sprint), but you get used to that. my main complaint at the moment is the weapon selection system. bear in mind that i play on a 360. for me, if i hold down the left bumper, i get a weapon menu overlay that shows up in real time which allows you so select a weapon. its not as easy as it sounds though. let me explain how complicated this is:

Press Lb to bring up wheel (keeping in mind that everything is still happening including combat, and you can still walk around with the left analog stick)
while holding Lb, use the right analog stick to select a weapon from the overlay wheel
now normally this would get you your weapon, but in the heat of combat it confuses me. its gotten me killed twice now
to make matters even more confusing, if i want to switch to a different weapon of the same type (since you seem to hold all of your weapons on you at the same time) i have to do everything above, and while holding Rb and the right stick in place, i have to use the Dpad to move left and right to select my new weapon. remember that this is all in real time, so if youre getting shot at you better be fast.

just now while playing (yes i was irritated enough to pause the game and post) some guy was trying to kidnap this woman. so the first thing i did was punch the guy. as im beating up on him, he pulls a gun on me and starts shooting me. at this point i was like "SHIT SHIT" because when you die you go back to your last hard save (apparently autosaves dont count) and i furiously mashed down Lb and pressed the right stick to the right to select my shotgun. i released Lb to close the select overlay, and pressed Left trigger to aim my shotgun so i could blow this guy's brains out. well instead of pulling the shotgun out and sighting in like he should, my guy didly-fucked around for a second, finally pulling the shotgun out as the killing bullet hit me and i dropped dead. i was irritated to reappear at the last place i had slept, especially seeing as i had JUST partaken in a game of "who can stab the table with a knife and not lose a finger", and saw the autosave icon in the corner as i left the table.

apart from that issue with the weapon selection (which again, as confusing as it may be, is only made worse by weird ass controller and my tendency to freak out at the first sign of danger), the game has been absolutely incredible so far. definitely play this game.

Autosaves save game data. Hard saves save data and location. If it autosaves, and then you die, you respawn at your last hard save location, but with the autosave data. Also, if you are killed in a sidequest, it respawns you, not at the hostpital, like in GTA, but at your last hard save. This means that the quest is still out there, and you don't have to go back to the last save to try to find it again. I only realized this near the end of the game, when I kept spawning in a room a few hundred yards from the quest, and I was able to just walk out and try it again. IN GTA, the quest opportunity would be lost unless you reloaded the last autosave or hard save.

As for the weapon selection, once I got used to it I liked it a lot. I rarely switch weapon types mid-fight- I select the model of each type I want before I get into a fight, and that way even if I want to switch types I don't have to mess with the gun models, only the broad selections.

    Re: Red Dead Redemption

well as i was saying, the times i got killed were times when i was caught off guard. i mean one time i was walking around and heard a yell, turned around, and there was a pack of coyotes right behind me that killed me. that wasnt really the weapon selection's fault, but things like that catch me off guard and lead to me getting killed.

despite what i said before, i DO like how the weapons are laid out, its just frustrating to have to switch mid battle because i tend to panic. im talking about situations like trying to lasso a guy who suddenly pulls a gun on you. its a bit difficult to switch, especially when the game delays the weapon take out.

and that thing about the saves i was talking about before, i realized i left something out about 30 seconds after i closed my browser window. thanks for the clarification on the saves

So? Not like I know about every show on every channel that is available in the US. That is just a dumb thing to assume.

i originally wasnt going to get this game, but after having to watch the same fucking commercial before every AVGN video on screw attack, it started to grow on me.

THAT right there is effective advertising.

Didn't do a good job. And it was aired at midnight, meaning no one gave a fuck.
