He is indeed French! Complete description is in the link. His uniform is a cross between early World War I French with the red pants and WWI Belgian in the pouches and webbing.
I have side views of 70% of the military guns in my universe, but only one drawing has the necessary top-view and cartridge/canister schematic to go with it. I will go scan and post them up as WIP later.
As for the airship...it is damn hard to draw at any angle, even though it's such a simple shape. I have a ship-ship combat image in progress.

I also edited the first post to fix the missing pictures (broken courtesy of Image Shack). Now they all link back to the dA hosting. It's actually rather interesting to compare some of that old shite to the newer stuff. So much has changed both visually and philosophically since then.

Me, I'm skinny all over. So maybe I have a bit of a bias when I draw, because I end up utilizing myself as the figure model when I need one.
That's because the pads he is wearing are around the same thickness as Level IV body armour...even on the legs. The helmet is also necessarily huge. Other than that, it's just straight-up BDUs.
