Supposedly that gif comes from a part in the game where you have no weapon and have to sneak around, it's just obviously a dumb AI that didn't see the player for some reason.

Edit: On that note:

The aliens in that part of the game are degenerate, and are blind and explode on contact. They are attracted to sound. Apparently, that's actually one of the better levels in the game since it's the only one that isn't run-n'-gun.

The final product is reminding me of that Starship Troopers game that came out several years ago...
