the second you stand on someting like that you can pull it out before your muscles contract. It'll still hurt like a mother fucker, but you wont have to go to surgery. I've done it before with nails.

The whole reason the muscles contract is to help with stopping the loss of blood.
If you pull the thing out and you've hit an artery, pulling the object out could cause as much damage if not worse on the exit than entry.
