Got it to work with a DLL injector.
Did you disable any internet games with this? When I tried to connect to an internet game with the DLL injected, none showed up. The moment I restarted the game without the DLL, I could see them again. I joined a dedicated BG game, walked around, checked my ping (120) and injected the DLL. Then, I mysteriously got a ping so high, I disconnected from the server in about 3 seconds. Did you disable Internet games for this build? Or is this some kind of bug?

Re: OpenSauce and Halo CE Crashing *PLEASE TEST FOR FEEDBACK*
When using Open Sauce, Halo CE limits the servers listed, based on if the server being listed is running Open Sauce or not.
Of course, if it is being run, it'll show up.
If it doesn't, it won't.
If you want to play online, just don't inject the dll, and you'll be able to play online.

It won't run unless I'm running a .DLL injector. It's the only way I can get around the startup exception at the moment.
OS works just fine after I get past that point, if I inject it.

Re: OpenSauce and Halo CE Crashing *PLEASE TEST FOR FEEDBACK*
I dont know if this is caused by OS, but it just happened recently and hasn't happened before, so it's likely.
I was able to use OS fine for a day, but today I had no text chat ingame. I ran the msi in the redist folder like you're supposed to, but now the game exceptions as the ingame F2 menu disappears after loading a map (when chat is meant to be shown). Removing OS doesn't fix this.

I had the server listing issue too. I tried using the latest OS listed on the first post (the 'correct version'). Under client version it's identified as 1.09 so maybe that's why you can only see servers running OS. reverted back to the OS link that is crossed out and I could see the servers once more.

Put the new strings.dll into your halo ce root folder.
Then when you get to the main menu.
Hit the ` key to enable console then type version 1.08ce

Hah, thanks, I managed to get into a Blood Gulch server and tried to mess around with OS. It just made it look like I was REALLY lagging when I modified the gravity, and, sadly, I couldn't get in the side seat of an opposing Warthog (it almost splattered me when I tried and saw the option to get in, but when I killed the driver I tried to get in when it was just the gunner, to no avail).
Again, I can ONLY load up OS through a common .DLL injector. I think it might be wisest to include a static .DLL injector with any download of OS. It wouldn't really be any extra coding, I got it to work with a .DLL injector meant for the game America's Army, so it shouldn't have to be customized.

for me it changed my halo ce version to 1.09.

The host of the game MUST be running OS too for things such as gravity changes and MTV to sync correctly. You can't just join another regular server and try getting into an enemy vehicle, it won't work.
Update 2 CAN'T be used with a DLL injector. A portion of the new code has to be ran before the game's systems are initialized.
Release builds have their game builds set to a new version (9). Debug doesn't (which is what jcap is still using) Why? Because release was meant for public usage and I didn't want to have people all :confused2: about why MTV wasn't working, but instead they're all :confused2: about not seeing any servers
Also, I would assume it pretty much a common sense thought that if you're running anything that messes with DX, and the game is still crashing, that you should test it without. IE, DXT camo fix

Re: OpenSauce and Halo CE Crashing *PLEASE TEST FOR FEEDBACK*
Ok, with regard to init.txt:
It seems ANY init.txt WILL crash Halo CE on startup, right before it reaches the main menu.
To clear up the reason I didn't have any problems when I tested, it was because I had a malformed init.txt which put everything as one long line with no spaces. No idea what caused that to happen, but now it's clear what could be the reason for many crashes.
To be specific, it is sv_name which crashes it. When the name is specified, the game will not make it past the loading screen.

There are no benefits from using OS features in regular 1.08 games. Regular games don't have MTV enabled (thus you can't use it) and they don't have the ability to change gravity. This is why I didn't allow OS to see regular v1.08 games.
Command line arguments like "-port" cannot be used in the init file. Isn't there a separate "init" file used for the dedi server anyway? Most of those commands make no sense in a "client" startup.

Re: OpenSauce and Halo CE Crashing *PLEASE TEST FOR FEEDBACK*
The init is the same for the client and server. Yeah, I know it makes no sense for CE to load it, but it does anyway. Maybe have OS prevent CE from loading it?
For the version number, maybe there should be a way for you to either see both 1.08 and "1.09" servers, but you can type something to filter only "1.09". I know someone figured out how to get a 1.08 server to display for all versions of clients, but can you do something similar for the client?
If not, I think it would be best to leave the version number at 1.08. Changing it would make the population smaller.

I think your confused... Xfire does work while the OS is in the root folder. You can play it and talk at the same time but the chat windows are seperate than halo ce right. You have to alt+shit+tab to the window to talk to him. Instead of using the in-game chat feature. Xfire does work but not the in-game chat feature or any in-game features.

May I ask, what happens if you inject the OS dll after you launched the game with Xfire? I'm curious if they can both work at once. If they can, then that's something that Xfire needs to look into doing, like Steam.

Scoob, make sure you're not using Xfire and check that there's no init.txt in your CE directory.
Also, does Halo crash immediately on launch, or does it load and then crash before the main menu?
Edit: If you have the dll error, then download the new OS d3d9 in the first post. There was a mistake during compiling which caused to ask for d3d9x_37.dll

Re: UPDATED: OpenSauce and Halo CE Crashing *PLEASE TEST FOR FEEDBACK*
Well there we have it. Xfire doesn't know how to hook a game properly.
I'm going to guess that if it Xfire could look like Steam, both would work.
Xfire should be injecting itself into the game after it has fully loaded, much like Steam does. This is a problem with Xfire's programming, not with OS or any d3d9. No matter what you use, Xfire will crash the game with a hook in the folder. This is just shitty coding by them.
I'm considering making a post on their forums about it in the feature requests section. They should absolutely do it the same way Steam does.
I wonder if this happens for all games. It probably does. It might be the reason why SoftTH (Software Triplehead) disabled Xfire from hooking into the game - because it crashed with everything.

I deleted init.txt from my CE directory, and everything worked! I tested OS on one of the maps in the Infernal Map Pack.
Also, I request a list of commands, as well. Speed doesn't work, and I can't tell what does or doesn't.

Re: UPDATED: OpenSauce and Halo CE Crashing *PLEASE TEST FOR FEEDBACK*
Ok, so it turns out that you can inject OS after Xfire has loaded, but Xfire cannot be injected after OS is loaded. Interesting.
I noticed that if you open Xfire after CE has loaded, it will immediately inject itself. So, I then started CE with OS, then launched Xfire. A few seconds later, Halo crashed.
There has to be a conflict that Xfire has, trying to modify something that OS has already modified. OS can work with whatever Xfire hooks, but Xfire cannot work with whatever OS hooks. But what? Is it possible to find out?

You can inject OS and have it work because none of its DX code gets called. Its only when the game calls it's version of Direct3DCreate9 that OS's DX code is executed. While I didn't use any of the DX resources by default in Update 1, Update 2 does (a la Battery menu system).

So it is xfire_toucan_xxxxx.dll (in this case xfire_toucan_37323.dll) which injects itself into the game. Find the conflict!
Edit: Ok, maybe the dll doesn't directly crash it. I can inject it, but of course it won't do anything without Xfire to work with it (Xfire was closed). I started CE with the d3d9, injected toucan, and then it was fine, despite not having any actual overlay because the key commands in Xfire's settings do not work.

That's because CE can only inject it on startup. And as Kornman has said numerous times, it needs to be loaded before CE loads its code for all of its features to work properly.

I have this version of haloce.exe but I'm not using the copy of sauce you had for download, I'm using the one I complied (I'm 99.99% sure it is the one I attempted to upload to halomaps). The code is pretty much unchanged, but the statistics line is commented out, as sugested by Kornman. Last night I decided to run it (with the -console extension in the halo shortcut), and all seemed fine, except for one thing

I have never downloaded version changer, and yet I was still able to find servers!! Also I had been playing with the gravity command prior to decideing to look for some servers, and when I joined the game it seemed I still had reduced gravity, while everyone else appeared normal. Just out of interest I typed cheat all weapons in, and to my supprise it worked (I had the -console extension remeber, not -devmode, or I wouldn't have been able to join the game). I'm not really the sort of person who cheats online though, so I promptly stopped using the dev button after trying to set my gravity back to normal. However, I don't know what number normal is, and typing gravity reset didn't seem to do anything (I'm guessing the fuction doesn't except strings).
Also, back on my hek PC a while back, the .dll seemed to be crashing Sapien, so I couldn't use the gravity command in scripts.

Rhydgaled simple answer is you dont have the source code that makes Halo think its 1.09.
The copy kornman has put up for download isnt the one with 1.09. Thats why you could join 1.08 servers.

Re: UPDATED: OpenSauce and Halo CE Crashing *PLEASE TEST FOR FEEDBACK*
I found a few bugs no one's really touched on:
1. I can't see ANY text anymore. I tried running that MSI thing, but to no avail. I even removed the .DLL from the CE folder, still nothing. I can't even see "the English committed suicide", etc. in a LAN game.
2. When you close Halo, although the task manager doesn't say the WINDOW is up, and while it doesn't appear down on the start menu windows bar, the PROCESS haloce.exe is STILL running, and every time you open and close the game, another process is created, but not destroyed. I was wondering why my computer turned into a snail, when I noticed that, even though Halo is technically closed, I was running close to 20 haloce.exe processes still, and each one of them took up as much system memory as if the window was still running. Again, this DOES NOT go away when you delete the .DLL.
Also, probably unrelated, but now my Firefox is slowing to a crawl, as well. It works fine for all of 10 minutes, then I have to end the process and start Firefox back up because all of a sudden, Firefox is taking up 99% of my CPU power, according to Task Manager. This didn't start until I started Open Sauce, though it may be unreleated.
I've run several virus scans, and all turned up zilch.

Connor was telling me something similar last night. No text, and he couldn't join any games even after it was removed. I denounced it as user error, though, because what he was describing seemed impossible for a dll to do.
I'm wondering if they are related to CE not closing, though. Did you close every instance? Did you try restarting your computer?
I ran with the d3d9, and I had no issues (with both the old and "new" one). I don't see how anyone could be any different.
