School, Mostly a waste of time? Give your opinion!

I think that school is a huge waste of time. During the majority of school, I just sit there with the teacher teaching other student's things that I have learned more than two years ago, and everything I learned last year in social studies, and the year before, has already been forgotten, due to me not needing to know it. Also, considering the massive amount of time I spend on a computer on a forum or such, I don't really need english class to teach me how to read complex sentences and words, along with how to write or type with proper spelling and grammar, due to me having learned it on my own in my spare time. Having learned what would take about 5 or so years in school, which i learned in about 2-3 months during summer, in spare time on the internet, leads me to think that it is even more of a waste of time.

Aswell stupidly, where I live, we have this 990hrs rule, meaning we have to be in school for atleast 990hrs throughout the whole year, when most of it is spent in study hall chatting with friends, or eating lunch. Because you could be done with all of your classes by 12 o'clock, but you would still have to stay in school due to the stupid rule. Also, now on to homework, I find it mostly pointless, all they want is to make sure you know the material, and well, isn't that what tests are for? If you spend twice the amount of checking on something, it may stay in the students head for a bit longer, but when they graduate and get a job, or go to colledge, odds are that the student will forget it due to them not needing to learn it.

Another problem I have is with the incredibly huge amounts of repetition and learning things you have learned atleast 5 times by now. How many times must we learn about how columbus went to america just for gold? Another thing, when it comes to some classes, all the teacher wants to know is if you tried and made an effort, and in the real world, that wont really do anything if you only put in effort, but do not do it correctly. Well, thats my two cents, and whatever you do, DON'T SAY TL;DR.

I don't mind going to school, I really don't like the whole learning part, but I like hanging out with my friends, which is why I go to school and dont get homeschooled.

i'm lucky i've got an amazing brain, almost photographic memory when it comes to knowledge, but then again, i suck with numbers, like phonenumbers. i only know my own ohousenumber, and dont even know my own mobile number.

i never had to do anyuthing during highschool, yet i still learnt, and remember, even up to today everythign that was ever taught there, and that was 3 years ago. i didnt even have to study for my final exam.

i never really went to school to learn anything, and most of the thigns that were taight were rather self-explanatory, and i did believe, while i was there, it was a waste of time.

now, i'm 20 years old, and have a fulltime job as 3d artist, and looking back on that time, i can tell anyone that school, isn't a waste of time. it wasnt for me anyway.

next arguement though, is that it differs STRONGLY from school to school, and country to country.

where i come from, dutch, english, french AND german, are all MANDATORY courses.
i was taught about nuclear physics when i was 14, and high level chemistry, and sub-atomic particles at 16, so i can definately say i had a good school.

some might not be able to say the same. especially when you're in america, because jesus christ, american schools are bad. no offence.
i've never been in one, so i can't really give a more founded opinion, but that's what i've heard, read, seen, and seen the results off.

in cases where you are in a bad school where you don't actually LEARN anything, its propably a waste of time, and even bad for you, because the only thing you * could * learn are social skills, but in such a bad school, i can't really imagine a healthy learning environment for socialskills, and send kids down the wrong path, so to speak.

i guess that you really have to ask yourself if you're going to a good school, and actually learn things, or not. the fact of wether you aftually care about the thigns you learn are irrelevant. and trust me, you'll realise when you're older why. might seem cliche, but it's the damn truth.

and to you personally wolf, i'd just want to tell you, that yes, i too thought homework was useless at the time, and honestly, i didnt do much of it myself, because i could get away woth it, or just copy it off someone. i COULD get away with it, because i had a sponge-brain. if you don't, i really do suggest you just make the homework you're supposed to, do it reluctantly, or pissed, but just do it. trust me, when you're 20 or so you'll see for yourself why i'm telling you this.

edit: you're in an american school, aka propagandafactory, you might not understand when you're 20, but for god's sake, keep stimulating your brain, and stay creative. THINK about things, and WANT to seek knowledge about what interests you. that's the thing schools HERE tend to, which isn't the case in america. keep stimulating yourself in as many ways as possible, and THEN you'll realise its importance when you're 20+

Depends on how good your teachers are. Through most of my school years I had shitty teachers who didn't give a damn about what they were teaching, and I didn't learn a thing in those classes. Every once in a while though, I would get a really good teacher and I absorbed everything they said. Generally, I had to study on my own to actually pass the classes and spent most of my time in school just socializing :\

Also, if you're thinking it's too easy why has no teacher recommended you to skip a grade? You should be "schooling" that homework.

PS. High school Diplomas are irrelevant in this day and age. Unfortunately, it's necessary for the things that are relevant.

I hate being home schooled, and having an overprotective mom doesin't help, I'm nto allowed to go ANYWHERE without a parent, even if it means going across the street to grab a ball my little sister threw over the fence...

@ Tweek: I completely agree. I am from Europe as well. I have relatives that go to school there and they all laugh at my puny list of 6 subjects.

I love school. I am taking Economics AP, Computer Programming, and Calculus BC AP (I am one of those weird people that enjoys doing math). I find that in order to enjoy school, you take electives which encompass subjects that you enjoy and will build a nice college resume.

For me, school was/is a humongous waste of time. That's why I now take classes that let me leave the building and go learn instead. My biggest problem is that you're required to take certain classes to a certain level. Example: I had to take 3 years of history. I now have that slot replaced with my internship, and I've already forgotten everything I learned (using that term lightly) in those 3 years.

I feel like those busy-work classes could have been better spent on courses worth taking. It was only by testing out that I was able to max out my music course levels. And even then, I didn't come close to taking everything I wanted to. Because I pissed away my time in my science and history courses (the two I dropped for my internship this year), I will never be able to take comp sci 4, unless I take it in college, which costs a fuckton more money.

If you think about it, it wouldn't be so bad to drop such requirements. If a student wants to learn history, there you go. If it weren't a requirement to have foreign language, I definitely would have done it anyway. To waste the time of both the students and the teacher is just plain stupid.

Now, aside from the whole forcing kids to "learn" shit they didn't ask to learn about, I only have one other complaint. I don't know about your schools, but for some reason, my school district has an awful lot of trouble with the idea that literature isn't what an English class should be. That should be, guess what, literature. English class is where the fuckheads who still can't speak their primary language correctly should go to not sound like morons. Some of you from out of the US may be thinking, "wait, but isn't that something they should already know?" Well, not here, evidently. Instead of learning how to compile sentences properly, we learn how to read books that all say the same message/have the same plot: One/a group of black people have some menial problem, and they fight with each other for about 200 pages while noting that white people are the root of it somehow. There really is nothing to be learned from any of it. You know what may have some educational value? A book not written with dialect that contradicts the language being studied. Look, I know American literature sucks (Excluding the Alphabet of Manliness), but surely there's something, SOMETHING other than this stupid plot that someone wrote?

I've hit a mental wall about here. If I think of a way to complete this thought, I will.

Yeah... you're missing the point of school.

It's not to directly learn everything... it's to teach you how to learn and solve problems.

It's one of those things you look back on... seriously... even as early as 2nd year university.

Also -- learning something then forgetting it doesn't mean you didn't need to learn it. I forgot a lot of highschool math, and I'm a 4th year Physics major/Math minor... however I needed to know the things which were dependant on the things that I learned and forgot. (etc.)

Not *directly* using something and forgetting it doesn't mean it wasn't required to know at one point to learn something else you needed.

I believe it honestly is based on three key factors.

1) Who the teacher is
2) What the class is
3) How much the student actually takes in


I have some classes where the teachers just don't teach. I find the classes to be a total waste of time. Hell, my sociology class we don't do anything on sociology. We're just taught to break the rules. Like our school, you have to have cellphones off and in your locker during school hours. In my class, the teacher doesn't care if you text in class as long as you make sure you don't get caught if a principal comes in. Another rule we have is that you can't have food outside of the cafeteria. He doesn't care as long as we put all trash in the trashcan, then cover the can with a bunch of scrap paper so you can't see the wrappers or anything.

Then my creative writing class the teacher doesn't teach anything that I haven't already learned from my Expository / College Writing classes last year. I see that class as 1 major waste of time.

Now for the classes I do care about, I find class to be very beneficial because I'm learning a lot that I will be able to hopefully take with me into college and then a career after. Like i love to draw and show my artistic sides, so my photoshop and drawing classes are really entertaining for me and I love being in them. Im also a big physics guy so my physics class rocks and its cool cause outta 25 students in our class im one of the 5 kids with A's while the rest are C's and below.

Pretty much about how the school system is broken thanks to the constant fear that a full interesting curriculum will offend a minority and then get all the schools bombed.

Depends on the school. Up until high school my parents put me in a series of hippie schools that pretty much left me to my own devices. Everything I know now I know because of high school, and because I'm pretty much self sufficient when it comes to learning things. If I need to learn something, I google it and teach myself, maybe get some help from a couple people along the way.

Now I'm in college and I'm learning the same shit I learned in high school all over again in my general ed classes...

School is a pretty big waste of time, considering here in America, we get taught how to take a test.

I'm fairly confident that if I had to take a test without knowing anything (unless it's a foreign language), I could do fairly well. We learn how to use problem solving skills by taking multiple choice tests.

School isn't a TOTAL waste of time, but our education system needs a serious refinement. Doing "real world" stuff would help us more than taking a standardized test. I'm not sure who the idiot was that thought taking a test would prove if we learned the material or not, but he obviously didn't go to school!

Sure it's a waste of time, however, society pretty much made it a necessity. In order to get a job, in most cases you need to go through school. In my opinion, it's better to have hands on experience with an interest of your choice than to sit in a room and learn about something that I have no use for, or will forget the second after i take a test on it.

I think school is necessary, but at the same time just a pain in the ass. No more regulatory rules on facial piercings and hair and it would be a better thing to go to.

Are you complaining that you are hanging out with friends? I enjoyed school very much. A lot of the time we were hanging out with friends, during freetime in class, or in three hour Study Halls. I never got sick of it. If I wasn't there, I'd be home alone on the computer. That's not better. Even in college now we have three hour breaks between classes and we just hang out in the cafeteria chatting. Of course that free time that we had in class is gone, which is I kind of miss, but I still enjoy it.

And you say that we won't use what we learned in High School? That's not true. In fact, today my calculus teacher was telling us that we better think back to how to solve quadratic equations (back in High School) to figure out how to solve these problems we are doing currently in class. It's never really gone.

I'd treaure the time you have now. Soon, once you graduate, you might want to be back in High School. Like I'm feeling now...

Hi, we have much to discuss. I've been homeschooled all my life, and in affect, I hate my life. My only friends are Christian, and have overprotective parents. They can't even come to my house because they will (god forbid) play "violent" video games. Luckily (can you call it lucky?) my mom isn't overprotective, and I can do things without a parent. But yah, i still can't meet people, as I don't have a car/live in a neighborhood. I'm leaving home in a year to go off to college, but what then? I'm fucked up and antisocial.

Anyway, how old are you? Heres some advice that was to late for me to use. Just stop working. Let your parents bitch and moan, ruin your life, whatever, but just don't do any school work. Unless they are assholes and don't care about you, they should cave and let you go to public school.

That happens to me to. I used to go to a school where a majority of the students would have no hopes of at least getting past the 10th grade. The teachers were horrible and students didnt care about the class and just acted like duechebags.

Meh, school is fine. Although you have to go through a few uninteresting subjects, it all pays off in the end. I'm probably going to specialize earlier, so I can get to what I'm interested in. I just wish that people my age were generally more mature... :smith:

its true that the American public school system is quite bad, and no matter how much money Barack Obama throws at it it won't improve until our culture starts to value education more. However that doesn't mean its a waste of time. School is a place of social development, and whether you realize or not, you do learn a lot there. Maybe you won't actually use the math, but you will most likely use the logic that is related to learning the math.

It's ok. It's meeting and talking to your friends that makes it really fun. :D

Basically that. God forbid I don't cite the specific fucking coordinates on the planet of where I quoted/found information from. Community service is stupid too. What the fuck does that have to do with academics, also fuck the community for fucking my academics.

I find school a great place to be. Sure, it might not always be fun and games, but without school, we'd be anti-social morons that are on the internet all day doing nothing (not that I'm calling anybody that). My social life at school has helped me become who I am, and without it, I probably wouldn't be as good as a person as I am now.

I have great friends there, and I really enjoy hanging out with them. Due to school, I have a reason to get up in the morning. Without it, I'd have nothing to do, and nobody to do it with. School isn't just about learning, it's about teaching you how to live life with others.

In conclusion, school is very much worth it, not a waste of time in the least bit.

School system is pretty fucked up. Though the real problem isn't the actual system but that it actually works in our society. So society is fucked up.

I won't even begin detailing all of the things wrong with how schools are run: Grading ect. I could write several page long articles on the matter. The only thing schools are good for right now are: Getting you into college and being social centers. They fail at everything else.

The community service is a fucking joke, and it's 40 hours up here :|

Or 150 for us IB people...though it's in categories, so only about 50 is actual service, the rest is jusy bullshitting about how doing daily activities is creative or active.

All I know so far is that in FL I need about 10-20 hours of community service and at least B's to qualify for scholarships.

I got out of my community service by talking my way out of it. As I did with most issues at school, fucked around a lot...

Community service is nothing, quit complaining. I need 75-100 I think and I accomplished that the first two years of high school.

I really just don't like doing extra bullshit work that I don't need to do. Like tweek said, I've always just been really well... smart. I get most things right away, and the homework/busywork is just a pain in the ass. I dont need to do fucking 40 pages of bookwork to understand something. I usually get by doing barey any homework but I ace nearly ever test. I've scored in the top 10% in our state standard test, the FCAT, nearly every year for the past 5 or 6 years.

I dont like taking bullshit classes where they teach me stuff I either already know, or dont care to (even though I know it'll help me in the long run, I still have a right to bitch and moan.) An example is a course I'm taking now called CCC(computing for college & careers, or something) in which we literally type shit from these 25 year old books all class. I usually finish all the typing assigned in 1 class, then have 2 more in which i have nothing to do. Just seems like a waste of my time. I know how to typw and use a computer but I have to take it as a pre-requisite for another course. My favorite classes have always been social studies, since I find it to be very interesting and easy.

To those complaining about their school specifically: Quiet you. We're talking about district/state/country education systems in general. We get it, you have a teacher who doesn't know anything about the subject they're teaching. That's what a teacher is. That's why they are teachers. Nobody who actually understands the subject would ever take a job with such shitty pay, unless they legitimately enjoy teaching, in which case, they probably aren't teaching something in the mainstream part of the graduation requirements. Use your school as an example, not a reason.

Now, on to my next point, which I don't feel like editing my other post for: the social life. In short, I don't have one. In long, I honestly don't think it's necessary, especially if you have shit to do like me. I mean, having friends isn't bad, I just think that if it's the only/best reason you have for going to school at all, there must be something wrong. Do you really need to get up at 6 AM just to see friends? I always figured a network of home schooled kids would be ideal for that kind of situation. Of course, the flaw in that plan is meeting the people, but I'm sure someone could think of a way around that.

EDIT- Just thought of something: The clubs/teams. That's where people could meet/find common interests. What you could have is like, a district system for stuff like sports, the arts, etc. So basically, leave the extracurricular things the same way, but the school stuff can be done at home.

If I'm supposed to find completely unbiased data and compile them into a research document that I can thus draw a conclusion at the end, why wouldn't I want to use a online encyclopedia that is 99% correct, and 99% unbiased. Surely using the document that has been proofread, and edited by countless users is reliable is it not?

School in general? Well, the system definitely needs to be reworked. Here is a very interesting read about mathematics specifically, although you can branch that out and say that about pretty much any subject taught in school.

My particular school is great. My only complaint is that the staff are a bit overprotective of the students. For a charter school named "High Tech LA" that claims "Community Ethics" as one of it's strongest points, it seems a bit childish to force WebNonSense down our throats.

One incident in particular really pissed me off, but it's not worth dealing with it in my senior year. I just want to get out and go to college. Anyway...

Last year computer access was taken away after a large number of students were caught using proxies to get around the LAUSD (school district block at the server level) and WebNonSense block. I personally never used that app myself but the entire student body was still punished. Funny, the IT guy always claimed that he had "records" that he could check. Interesting how he couldn't check them when the time came around that they were needed.

We also had a relatively lax "business casual" dress code. The seniors last year were notorious for breaking even that and while there was a "3 Strikes" rule in place, it was never actually followed by the staff. Instead they would send students to the office and bitch to us about it. Their method of fixing this? Around the time computer access was blocked they came up with a brilliant solution. They would punish the underclassmen by tightening up the dress code. Ummm....the seniors were going to be gone in a few months....they really don't fucking care anyway....why are you punishing our class for their disrespect?

Computer access was given back a few weeks later (after numerous classes were hopelessly behind - the photography class was reduced to cutting pictures out of magazines and the programming class had to use TiBasic on TI-89's....lol). I honestly couldn't give 2/3rds of a fuck about computers being taken away. The thing that bothered me was the fact that everyone was blindly being punished for the mistakes of a few fuckups. Although the fact that they took computers away around the time that summer program stuff was coming in was stupid; I found out that I wasn't accepted into COSMOS a week late because I made the mistake of using the school email for it (which they kindly disabled while the computer priveledges were gone).

What upset me even more was that one staff member made a holocaust reference about it, saying that "none of the lower level Germans told anyone about what was going on during the holocaust and said no" and that we were just like that because no one snitched on the people using the proxy. I'm not Jewish and I'm not much of a religious person in general, but to say something of that magnitude about a group of students is a bit too much for my tastes.

Oh, and don't even try to use the iMacs at my school. They are the old "Pod" style ones (with the LCD screen on the "neck" thing) with 256 megs of ram running OS 10.4. The OS is horrifically broken on most of them and things like Word won't open. Hell, on most of the computers word documents will silently dissapear while they are being used/written. These are the only computers we can really use outside of class and it's a shame that they aren't properly maintained. With about an hour of work on each they would be screaming fast, but the IT guy doesn't seem to give much of a shit.

That is a mixed blessing though, considering the fact that full Terminal access is granted to our accounts. :downs:.

Some of the old Dells are in shambles as well, but that is to be expected. They are close to 5-6 years old and should have been replaced long ago. Our IBM's have held up like tanks, although the batteries are finally failing on some of them so that there is less then an hour of battery life. The newer dells are nice - they have Core 2 Duos in them but they have Shitegrated graphics. This year we got a cart of HP MiniNotes - those things are awesome. Netbooks ftw. Normally I'm happy about even having computers at all but the netbooks are really something else. <3.

Would I say that the past four years of hell at HTLA were worth it? Of course. While the staff can be tempermental and unprofessional, the education you get there is top notch. The teachers know what they are talking about and actually enjoy their jobs. I've always been the type that learns better by doing homework then by studying and the staff realize that people have different learning styles. My history, calc and physics teachers are awesome people and are great at what they do. There is a lot of work but it isn't particularly hard. I'm taking AP Calc and AP Physics right now and I'm getting all the stuff that we go over. Our History teacher is actually talking about relevant things (the economy in particular, economics is his favorite topic and he does an excellent job of integrating that into his history class) and he has a very relaxed grading policy.

The best thing about my school is that the teachers are actively trying to get us ready and into college. All of our coursework is pretty much at college level, if not above it. We have a dedicated college counselor who actually gives a damn and who helps us with the applications and stuff. A+ to the school for that.

Oh, and I have friends, lol. And they actually understand me when I babble on about how my C++ Compiler broke itself. Hell, sometimes they even fix the problem. xD.

I still built most of the custom computers for people at my school. Lol.

Lanparties are pretty win as well. They generally are small and not many people play CS 1.6 or CS:S. Lots of Halo and COD fans though.

If I said I envied you, would it matter? I wish my school was like that, sad thing is I know more about what they teach then they do, and it took them 20 years of school to make it to where I was in 10th Grade.

School here is awesome. The grading system is a bit iffy (There's only four different marks you can get, Not Achieved through Excellence), but other than that and one teacher who is obsessed with war and bullshit, and thinks that giving you a book is teaching you, everything is awesome. My classes are relatively small in the last year, the biggest being Calculus with 11 people, and Physics with 3. Social side is great, lots of mates with a common room for us to hang out at lunch. All of the 'cool doods' decided not to stay for the final year, which means they're not distracting the teachers all the time.

The only mandatory subject for your first 3 years (out of 5) of high school here is English and Maths, which is fair enough. From there you can take whatever is available, provided you meet the prerequisites, although if you're good enough the teachers are sweet about you taking classes you didn't take the previous year (eg taking 7th form Chemistry without doing 6th). Social Studies involves world studies, not New Zealand's history which is good because nothing interesting ever happened.

Also, reading over some posts, is it mandatory that you guys do a minimum amount of community service and PE each week? That's retarded. Community Service here is reserved for people who can't pay their fines, or are in trouble with the police.

My school has something called "X-Block" for PE. Every quarter they get everybody in a room and randomly select names. When you are selected you can then pick your X-Block. DDR is usually the first to go for obvious reasons.

We don't have any minimum Public Service hours to do, but we do have to take at least one semester of Internship. We didn't get to pick our internship. While I'm happy with my choice I would have liked to have gotten a place where I do more programming type stuff, even if it is just web programming.

I have a friend who has completed all of the highest level Math, Science and Elective courses (2 choices) and so he gets to choose 4 college classes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays he doesn't need to come in. Lol.

Next year I'm probably going to take a full on C++ course (more to strengthen my current knowledge then to actually learn it - I have a pretty good idea of the basics) or my school's web design class (Javascript and PHP IIRC, I already skimmed through some guides and get the general gist of it). Funny how all these things are C based :p.

I dunno why you guys are bitching about PE. Get out and exercise much?

4 years of water polo, 4 years of swim team. 3 years on Varsity for both. I also started the first surf team before I left. Sports and other social shit were the only way I got through that bullshit.

10 years of soccer, football every recess lunch and after school, massively active in PE, surfing every weekened, and i made an entire camp consisting of felled trees that we cut down with a tomohawk to construck, jetties for our water shit such as canoes, a shack to store our barbie equipment and 2 bridges spanning along a gully as well as other stuff used to construct and improove 2 swings and jumps we had into the river, couple that with 2-3 hours of swimming a day as well as 8-14 on the weekened when available.

back in my hay day i was a fit whipper snapper lol.
i went down to the river the other day to check out what was still there, but sdaly most of it got washed away in the flood, and the simple swim accross the river that i used to do about 8 times daily had me fucking Rooted rofl.

Meh, we don't get a PE class in the IB...not that it really matters to me, since I do some other stuff outside of school, such as skiing, TaeKwonDo, biking, etc...

And about the teachers, ours are great, and are very flexible when they we we have too much work on our hands. They actually try to make our life easier, not harder.

My teachers are NOT flexible this year...all of them have rigid schedules with a plan mapped for the whole year, which is already causing problems because these schedules do not allow me to sit down and actually get my IB Extended Essay out the damn door...

English and French make up 75% of my homework. Math is 20%. The rest is everything else.
