Halo PC/CE now just that bit more safe from piracy!
So you know that "Halo Keygen" that's been floating around? The one that cycles through eight legit cd keys that were shared way back when? Well I was finally able to get all eight globally banned via the gamespy master server, take that you cd-key-already-in-use-join-spamming-cheatersfaggots!

Ask if they can prohibit clients 1.0 and 1.04 (THOSE ONLY!) from querying the server list. Heh.
Actually, just block the servers from talking to Gamespy on those versions. Then you don't need to worry about clients since there will be no list.

Will do!
I asked him if he could ban via hash so that I could give him some hashes from my Devicator database that have a bajjillion names associated with them:
Quote:
I need to figure that part out; I don't currently know how to correlate the key with the hash that appears in the ban file, so I'll have to dig through the source.
I have to be careful about that from a policy perspective, though: if someone files an official complaint with Microsoft that they were banned, I don't think I can cite "community volunteers" as a legally valid source of ban data. When you give me the CD key, that's actual proof (or, put another way, if posessing the CD key makes you its owner, then you just asked me to ban 8 copies that you own, and I obliged :-)
anyway, the Gamespy site automatically tracks keys that are being used from multiple IPs and I can continue to ban the notable offenders based on that, so don't trouble yourself over it.
thanks,
Roger
Also, I'm testing the waters with my latest message to him... Lets see what kind of a reaction he has to what we, the community, mainly Rec0, Kornman, etc, have been able to do to the dedicated server in terms of the Devicator. I'd like to see if he's for researching the game like this or not, though since Halo CE is mainly Gearboxes game I'm not sure he'll much care.

Thanks for asking about blocking the versions. They can effectively eliminate probably 95% of the piracy by doing that. I'm not saying that everyone who plays the game uses those older versions, but rather that most of the people who DO pirate the game play on those versions.

We're not asking for support here. It's not his job to support third-party "hacks" (if you want to call them) for the game. Freelancer was asking more for his opinion on them. I'm curious as well of his reaction to these things, especially with regard to OpenSauce. (PS: Hire Kornman)

Thats you, I bet more people would rather have more then a 100 player base. There's over a 1000 in 1.00 and 1.04 combined, and getting rid of those would drop. Halo CE is still 20 dollars at my Gamestop, and my local walmart dosent even sell it.

Re: Halo PC/CE now just that bit more safe from piracy!
Some of the people playing 1.00 and 1.04 actually own the game and are only playing the older versions so that they can play with other people. Removing the option to play in 1.00 or 1.04 would force those people to update to 1.08.
Also, I once reinstalled HCE and decided to put in a UI that didn't check for updates before I updated it to 1.08, just to see what the 1.00 community was like, and I must say, it is full of people who either don't speak English or those who are asses. Also, I did not spot ONE custom map in the server browser (after selecting the option to show maps I don't have), so you might as well play HPC.
Edit: Yeah, I meant 1.00 between "the" and "community", not 1.08. Thanks Polar.

Re: Halo PC/CE now just that bit more safe from piracy!
All the people that legally own the game that are playing on a version other than 1.08 are only doing it because the other versions have more players due to piracy. If said versions are disabled all the people who legally own the game will update to 1.08 and increase it's player base by that much more. Legally and ethically this is the best way to go about this, if I kill Halo PC/CE in the process, awesome.
Also, no response yet to my latest message, it takes him a couple days to respond usually.

Re: Halo PC/CE now just that bit more safe from piracy!
They could use the version changer to get in 1.08 with their old cracked 1.00 exe. Server side they download the fixed 1.08 server executable that fixes the current exploits in halo.. which additionally also disables version check and cd key check. All of these are public programs/tools that already exist. You're only forcing them to use these tools.
In short you're welcoming pirates to 1.08. Maybe to 1.09 as well if these programs get updated.
I'm against pirating halo - it's cheap. So don't just suddenly block these versions without thinking of all the consequences, since halo ce dying is not the only one.

Because they're lazy and what they have now is a lot simpler. They probably think there's also no advantage at all to move to 1.08. That's partly true because it is more difficult from them to play on 1.08 (they have to know about the workarounds - and I think most don't even have a clue they exist). Plus server operations would need to host the modified exe.

Most dedicated servers on 1.00 are 1.08 dedi exe's modified to show up on 1.00 instead of 1.08. It also is set to not send the player cd-keys to gamespy. So blocking them on gamespy will probably do nothing.

Yeah, and that's why they should block those versions. Freelancer, make that another point. The majority of the servers don't even have the Gamespy validation, so blocking the keys is pointless. It's best to render those servers completely useless.

Re: Halo PC/CE now just that bit more safe from piracy!
The reason the outdated versions have players is not because of piracy. It's because everyone would have to move at once or else they won't be playing with their friends, and the faggots are just too lazy to do that. If they're forced to all migrate at once, then the same population you see on the old version will be on the new one.

It'd be nice to have a bigger playerbase, but we'd be sacrificing quallity for quantity (and the quality of the current players is dubious at best). I like HCE as much as anyone here, but the only people left are either elitist fuckheads (you know, the ones that type 'headshot' every chance they get or can't stop ROFL'ing anytime you might actually kill them since they can only attribute their deaths to a lucky shot) or people who love to play nothing but stock maps.

Why would we give a shit about killing the player base of the old versions? Almost everyone here and in the various other CE communities plays on 1.08. Also, as already pointed out, killing the old versions would actually result in an increase of the 1.08 player base. How would disabling them kill CE? You think the life of this game relies on those old versions? What...? The state of the game has always been gauged based on the player base of the current version.

You'll always be able to direct connect to a server. That's why I made mention about not listing any of the 1.0 and 1.04 servers. The game would still work for directly connecting and LAN, but it would not provide a server list.
I really want to change the direction of this thread back to finding CD keys. If you can find a LEGIT Halo CD key that is not on that list, post it here. (+rep for posts)
I was planning on making a thread similar to this eventually. We need to blacklist all the CD keys ourselves from our system (and to add to the global banlist). Then, no keys can slip through the cracks.
