Halo PC's key with Reach
So I was just looking through HBO's forum, when I found This, which then links to Here

We're dealing with the keygen problem as best we can. For starters, I pulled a list of keys that had actually been used as of a month or two ago, and we'll probably validate against that list. So people won;t be able to just get the keygen now and claim the... reward. (i.e., people who didn't even bother to pirate the game :-) It also means that buying one of the few remaining copies at retail won't help you anymore.
So yeah, we're on it. Start spreading the word on other sites that Halo PC users should check here a couple weeks before Reach launches for details on what to do with the key.
So it looks like the reward will be something to do with Reach. I can't really understand why we need our Halo PC keys for it though.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
If this was a dream, it would be something like a discount on "Halo Reach PC".
But its not a dream, so... well have to wait and see I suppose.

You obviously need it to prove you own the game and can use it to redeem something. I hope its something better than a helmet.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
Wait, so keys used from Halo PC's inception until a month or two ago, or just used about a month or two ago? I have two keys and I've only used one as recently as this or late last month. The other...I'm not even sure if I've used it yet :s
Didn't know there was a real keygen for Halo PC...unless it just spits out a cycled list. Fucking pirates. Fuck them and fuck v1.00 CE.

Didn't know either that a real keygen besides that cycle crap one existed. Though I always wondered why no one made one :P
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I am intrigued, very intrigued. I wonder why they would bother promoting HPC, even when Bungie really didn't have a whole lot to do with the port and neither Bungie, Microsoft or Gearbox would be making a profit from promoting it now.
Unless it's Bungie's way of apologizing for PC players getting the short end of the stick for all these years.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I think it's sheer benevolence, rather than promotion. From 2005 and on, the patches we've gotten were out of the kindness of a single Bungie employee and that same employee probably suggested this as a cool way to reward a community that's been left in the cold.
I mean, they never even acknowledged H2V's release. They know how bad we've had it.

Not quite true*. "For the last several months, the Bungie and Microsoft guys were in it just as deep as the Gearbox guys were - writing code, prioritizing tasks, etc. It was a group effort and it was pretty hard-core, non-stop - even bonding, if you can call it that."
I'm excited to hear that this CD key thing is still in. Bungie brought it up months ago, that we should save our CD keys, but hasn't said anything on it until just now. I still have mine safe.
*Oh yes, it's that thread
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
Awesome. Thank god I wrote my CD key on a piece of paper and put it inside my halo case because I was stupid and took off the yellow sticker with the CD key from the slip and lost it.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
What can we do with the key before Reach's launch? WHen does Reach come out anyway?
Probably something to type in the site and we get something if we play Reach? It's "a final feature to claim a reward". I remember we had a debate on what "feature" could mean =(
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
It's probably in-line with the bonuses for playing Halo 2, which Bungie has also been quiet about.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
Maybe we'll get a free year subscription of Bungie Pro?
wonder if I can then wait a year then enter in my second key :o
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
My guess would be the Mark V helmet as it wasn't on the armoury picture on Bungie's weekly update, so i guess the master chief variants of the helmets are available through 'other ways'.
I've always held on to my Halo PC retail copy it's up there with my Halo for Xbox. This is a very interesting thing Bungie are doing though - i guess we'll know more in September.
e: I take that back, i bet all the previous Spartan helmet variations (or at least alot of them) will be unlockable through completing different difficulties on single player and firefight stuff, similar to how you unlocked more helmets in Halo 3, but maybe they only unlock for purchase. And the ones shown in the BWU armoury picture are just those available to purchase with credits as soon as you put the disc in. - so i have no idea what the PC Key would unlock...
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
i have two CD keys so i guess i could give away the second one if its a helmet or keep both if its jsut bungie pro
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I haven't even played in the past two months fuck that noise
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I think Sawnose took a look at EVERY key that's been used up to 2 months ago and is invalidating the ones that have been used hundreds of times.
I know I bought 2 copies of PC, but I lost one of my cases. Just found the other, so I'm good there.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I hope its something exclusive, so if its a helmet its a very rare one people cant purchase from the game. Still rocking my retail copy, I'm pretty surprised at the condition I've been able to keep it all in, considering its from 2003 it looks immaculate.

I think what he meant is that all keys used UP TO a month or two ago are good. Playing a game now won't help get on that list.

I think I'm eligible, I've owned this copy of PC for a couple of years and installed/uninstalled it a few times. I can has goodies? :-3

Hey, I can dream can't I?

Apparently it's a visual flair, which is exactly what bungies been calling all these exclusive armours.
Halo 1 MkV armour?:ohboy:

Now that you mention it, that does ring a bell. Where else did they actually refer to armor as a piece of "visual flair?" I know with Halo 2 Xbox, they said a piece of visual flair would be awarded to those playing the game on its last day, but they never said what.

I'm just paraphrasing here but:
"Pre-order halo;reach limited edition and get some exclusive elite visual flair and for those who want more, get the legendary for some flaming flair."
I can't remember the exact words they used, it was in a update long ago but like you said, their doing something for halo 2 players as well so it cant just be a sign next to your name.

It's confirmed that if you played any time before the last two months, you are safe:

I played Halo PC maybe once or twice before Custom Edition was released. Hopefully they tracked down my CD key from waaaay back. Unless it doesn't matter if you played either PC or CE.

When they say CE, they really mean Combat Evolved. So you're good if you played even before Custom Edition was released.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I don't even know if i've ever played PC online... I've just been a CE player

I don't think it matters if you played Halo PC or CE.
It's the same Gamespy authentication system, just different game versions.

so if theyre only checking halo pc and not ce for recent players, do you think i could get away with taking a picture of myself holding my key with the original box and send it to bungie? i think i might have played pc once or twice in total, but i played ce a whole lot last year.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
so if we played custom ed we're safe thank god for tinkering with maps ealier this srping and everything else such as MPG3 testing
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
So i've played like once in the last few months :/ i hope my key works...
but i bet it has somethign to do with special armor or something.

Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
They are probably just collecting the keys so they can make their own keygen for the office.

Input your key backwards for a Halo Reach PC trial beta rev1 build 777.

Whoa, people! My PM box just exploded after replying below. I can't field questions on an individual basis, and there are getting to be too many posts in this thread for me to read everything. The answer: wait and see. And don't try and buy it now, because the list of valid keys was locked in May to those already used, to prevent us from being overrun by keygenners. A few more weeks of patience, and we'll start validating keys, PC and Mac. The reward is a small visual thing in-game, similar to what we promised for Halo 2 players. Please self-police this thread by pointing people to the main answer: wait and see.
Oh wow, I can have a floating image above my head :O This is BEST reward EVER!! :raise:

Well that would be awkward.
I would have both the halo Pc symbol and the Halo 2 symbol, wouldn't that clutter the screen up?
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
* Something is better than nothing. At least they're acknowledging the player base that still exists in both game worlds (or did, in H2X's case). This is their last game in the Halo universe, it's just their way of paying homage.

edit - see my addendum at the end of the OP
edit -
To clarify, OLD keys work. If you ever used your key (technically, to enter the multiplayer game lobby, since that's what validates the key) at any time from 2003 until a couple months ago (May?), you should be ok. We won't be allowing NEW keys, because we'll assume they were keygenned.
"Halo 1 for Mac" users are included in this.
"Halo 2 for PC" is NOT included since Bungie wasn't involved in that port.
edit -
The reward is a small "visual flair", as was described during the last days of Halo 2 for players of that game. Not armor or anything in the Armory. We realize that some people have lost their keys or never played online to validate their key, and unfortunately we can't do anything about that. If that's you, you're not missing out on something like Recon or Flames, it's just a little indication that people have been part of a certain Halo community for a while, and we wanted to give them a nod.
As others have noted, we have no way of telling if you've played the Xbox version, so that isn't included here.
edit -
Yes, you can continue to play the game without invalidating your key.
Well then.
E: If he's saying Halo for Mac, I'm assuming Custom Edition is in as well. I know I don't have much to worry about, as I played Halo PC once or twice (mostly with buddies, never of my own accord), but Custom Edition should be fine, too.

Well, I'd rather have that greenie over my head than Recon helmet 2.0. Think of how many people in Mac/PC/CE who still actually have their freaking original cd keys from 2003 up until May and have also used them to go online. Now consider how many will be getting Reach and how many will actually know that the key will do them anything special.
I think in the expanse that will be Reach's online user base, the people who not only have this new flair but also use it will be really small. It won't turn into another Recon either because it wouldn't make sense for Bungie to just start handing it out as awards when it is specifically for H1PC players.
They're flooding the market with tons of unique visual flairs, each of which can only be obtained from one specific source. It should lessen the blow people saw with the Recon craze as we go into Reach. Of course, you'll always have whiny little fucks saying "gimme <X>" when the signs clearly said you had to buy <A> in order to get <X>.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
See, I'm probably not going to use 90% of my special goodies.
I may use my flaming helmet, my GameStop grenade belt, my green triangle, and (if it doesn't override the greenie) my special "You played Halo 2 on the last day!" flair.
Other than that, I'm just going to go with what looks cool. Right now, I'm leaning towards that Stormtrooper-ish looking helmet. And Sargent Stacker in Firefight. Hell yes.

Yeah, I've seen it said by multiple employees, and that although it wasn't final at the time, they said the reward would most likely be an in-menu icon like the Halo 3 septagon for being a Bungie.net member.

I tried running it on a PPC based Mac a while back...wasn't good enough for the game. Haven't tried it on my Intel book yet. The PC version also had very little support for hardware configurations. To top it off, the mother fucking publisher's bullshit protection also locks you from using the game if you don't fit the requirements to the letter. You can't even fucking say "ok, but play the game anyway". If this wasn't an issue, I would have been messing with the game for Yelo too (since it still had the networking/multiplayer code from H1X era in it). I enjoyed the Xbox game though.

Derek – Yes, we built a gameplay prototype in the Halo engine while we were developing our own custom engine for Shadowrun (codename: Badger). This allowed a small team of programmers, artists, and designers to quickly iterate on new ideas while building off stuff that just plain worked already in Halo, without having to wait for major features to roll into the Badger engine. This also gave us confidence to say, "Yes, Teleport is going to rule, so go ahead and spend the time to do it right for the final game." Nothing beats playing the game (even an ugly prototype) to let you know what is awesome and what should be cut.
Wasn't sure if it was public knowledge or not but since it is..."Looks like I picked the wrong day to stop smokin'!"
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I won't play another Halo until they make something for PC again. Sadly enough, we all know how that one will turn out.
-
Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
The fact that us, being obvious PC players, getting to use our CD-Key for Reach, currently an 'exclusive' 360 title...leads me to believe it probably won't ever be on PC since it's likely a lot of people will (if they haven't already, like me ._.) now buy a 360 and finally move on from the first Halo to the last Halo. The jump isn't exactly frightening either, Reach is probably more like Halo 1 than Halo 2 and 3 were.
Can always look forward to Bungie's next game, which will (or better be) on PC since...you know, they're done with Halo and now are signed for 10 years with Activision. (Erk, let's not get into that)

Next game will be for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3
Only their next game is signed to be published with Activision for the next decade. Any other games they come out with on the side can be done with anyone else (including MS). AV only has publishing rights over their next semi-known about game. Bungie isn't going to let another MS happen to their studio or game franchise. They learned how not to make games after Halo 2, and they learned how not to get a publisher after being bought by MS. It may have had its perks, but they don't own the Halo franchise now.
Reach could easily get ported to the PC later on...but Bungie won't be the ones doing it, so looking at what they're doing shouldn't be what's leading you to jump to conclusions.

Always wanted a shadowrun style teleport in Halo. I always thought it would be a pretty sweet (if used and placed sparsely) armor ability in Reach.

How'd they get teleport to work in the halo engine? Seems a little outside of the engine's boundaries, but then again I'm no coding scholar :eng101:. Would they have been allowed to use a more (open?) version of the engine to allow for modifications, or did they have basically the same toolset we have?

Patrick made a working "portal" gun for HCE with an external app if that helps. Not sure how teleport worked in shadowrun but so it may be completely different.

Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
FASA probably just asked for the engine, since they were owned by Microsoft.

And now Reach will have a Shadowrun feel to it, what with Sage Merill on the team!
Apparently there was a bit of back-and-forth going on with FASA and Bungie.
"Shadowrun’s dev team included a Halo alum, who was that and what did he bring to the party?
John – We have a couple actually. I was design lead for Halo (one) and Shadowrun and Bart House worked on the networking for Halo 2 and Shadowrun. We’ve also traded other arts and smarts over the past couple of years including Dorje Bellbrook who did concept art for Shadowrun and is now working on Halo 3."

What, so Sage was some guy on Shadowrun? I don't know these things.. if that's the case that's pretty awesome.

That sounds interesting..... Never herd of it though; did he release it somewhere? I've been looking into doing some memory hacking I may try to do a shadowrun style teleporter app. It would basically need to get current position and current looking direction and derive a new position value and teleport the player to it. I have no idea what really is possible with memory hacking so instead of sitting here babbling like a noob I'm going to read Patrick's tutorial a start fooling around with some stuff.

Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
He released a beta (or alpha or pre-alpha, whatever) awhile back that worked in a map called Chiller. I had it in my old drive before it went gonzo.

They had full access to the code.
It's funny because one of the utilities in the prototype is a hologram. Expect, it also shoots enemies and runs around (so not just running a straight line) :allears:. The teleporter worked by pressing the button you had it mapped to and it would warp you about 5 feet or something (along with playing all the teleporter effects/sounds). You could remap all the buttons (so you could make the left trigger your weapon's trigger, etc). Was a pretty cool prototype, they really had fun with it. A few game breaking bugs though, but what do you expect?

Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
It's a shame they couldn't figure out a way to reward the community that was playing Halo way back in the days of the Atari 2600. If anyone deserves "Flair" (Woooo!), it be they.

Just search around the HCE/release section (or look through patrick's created threads- that'd probably be faster).
There was a public working release a year or two back.

Re: Halo PC's key with Reach
I did, and all links seem to be dead. )-:
No worries though I'm already relearning VB.net and am about to fun making my own stuff.
I found it!! The link wasn't dead. There was just a mistakenly appended l at the end of the url. Here is the chiller portal map if anyone has had revived interest.

Teleporting, is crazy easy. You just change the players position, then do some fancy effects (white screen) to cover up and make it look awesomer.
