Hey guys, I've setup a CS style GUNGAME server:
http://www.halo-ce.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=17
Let me know what you think!
Sounds cool. Has nobody done this before? And is there a list of the sequence of weapons?
Weapon Progession:
Plasma Pistol
Plasma Rifle
Needler
Assault Rifle
Shotgun
Pistol
Sniper Rifle
Plasma Nade
Frag Nade
Flamer
Fuel Rod Gun
Rocket Launcher
Oddball
I'm open to suggestions on this, obviously I want it to go from shitty -> good.
How is this even possible? lol
E: Just treid it out. Works as intended, I can't pick up anything on the map. Though there was noone on the server so I coudln't actually play :(
How does this work? Is it all scripted with one of the server apps? I've been out of the loop for a while.
Yeah it's all scripted using SAPP, and the weapons and power-ups on the map are intentionally disabled. Wouldn't be a very good gungame if you could just pickup whatever you wanted off the map haha.
I'm asking sehe to add a event_wdrop, similar to event_wpickup, once I have that I'll be able to force oddballs on you as quickly as you drop them. I'm not sure if this is a great solution though... Right now if you drop the oddball you're screwed because you can't pick anything up (including the oddball you just dropped). That means you're useless until you respawn again.
If I had event_wdel I could just give you another oddball if you were to drop the one you're given. However this would be an infinite thing so you could just constantly click to "fire", thus dropping the ball, and then be given a new ball.
I can imaging the thousands of skulls flying around the server already.
Best solution would be a command that prevents you from dropping the ball somehow.
Probably a script that SAPP runs since that's what the server app is. And the weapon sequence looks alright, but having a rocket launcher to get to the oddball is a bit easy, isn't it? Maybe switch the positions of the Frag Grenade and RL? I'm assuming unlimited grenades, so that means spam is possible, so it's not to hard to get kills. I assume melee kills levels us up as well? And what happens if you TK/suicide? Do you drop a level?
Could you also do it like the old css gg servers where you have to work backwards down the list once you got the kill with the final weapon? 13 weapons seems like it would go quick, especially in Halo.
Start with power weapons and work your way up to weaker ones as you gain levels. It lets people who join late or get screwed by spawns have a chance.
How about this for a modified order? Then work backwards of course. Also does SAPP have a way of detecting what weapon a player was killed with? Would be cool for melees to set someone back. Also suicides.
Plasma Pistol
Plasma Rifle
Assault Rifle
Shotgun
Needler
Sniper Rifle
Pistol
Flamer
Fuel Rod Gun
Rocket Launcher
Frag Nade
Oddball
Yeah flag poles can be used, I'm thinking that I'll make oddball the first melee weapon you need to get a kill with (mid way through the weapon cycle), then I'll make the flag the final one.
Plasma Pistol >>>> Rocket Launcher
Plasma Rifle >>>> Fuel Rod Gun
Needler >>>> Flame Thrower
Assault Rifle >>>> Plasma Grenade
Shotgun >>>> Frag Grenade
Pistol >>>> Sniper Rifle
Sniper Rifle >>>> Pistol
Plasma Nade >>>> Shotgun
Frag Nade >>>> Assault Rifle
Flamer >>>> Needler
Fuel Rod Gun >>>> Plasma Rifle
Rocket Launcher >>>> Plasma Pistol
Oddball >>>> Oddball
With that, you move from primarily area of effect weapons to longer ranged weapons leveling up to close range. If you want to extend game length, require two kills with each weapon before you die. Oddball would only require one kill since it is melee. I suggest the while you're still alive aspect because I somehow triple leveled while dead one round going from needler to pistol. I can only guess that people with nades killed themselves after taking damage from my needles.
With this order, people who enter the game late or spawn on the opposite end of the map have a chance to work their way up due to longer range and hitscan weaponry. Part of the hardest aspect of the plasma weapons is that you have to lead on a no-lead server. With skill, LOL MLG PRO!, you can keep your lead and this disparity of being behind actually meaning you are in the lead is generally considered good design from a psychological perspective. That feeling of being underpowered and wondering if you're going to be able to pull through and win is the hook/tension that makes people keep playing.
I may or may not have admin edited my rep to some insanely low number.
Also, I made some changes to the weapons order (very similar to what Zeph suggested).
At the time of this post the 1.10 master server is offline, you can direct ip connect to the server using:
game.halo-ce.com:2310
Grenades are jsut bad. Take out grenades and just make the order reverse after getting to the top.
I think generally (it depends on the local terrain) the needler is much harder to get a kill with than the plasma rifle.
Really? It's basically easy mode for me no matter which map.
Yeah you just need to get close enough to the person to use it effectively.
Played the updated version. Nades just seem to be in a weird spot. Move them to after PP?
Grenades are terrible. Remove them completely.
gameservers.com opened up some slots in Chicago, so I've bought a server there for 12 months (donations welcome to keep it running there). The name of the server is the same if you're connecting via server list (BUNGIE GUNGAME).
If you use Direct IP you can now use:
gungame.halo-ce.com
If you feel like donating to keep the server running, please click the following link!

Or if you're planning on buying your own server (I highly recommend gameservers.com for Halo CE/PC servers), use my referral link before ordering (click this before ordering):
http://www.gameservers.com/?ref=1620893
strafe beats needler
I pushed an update to the gametype that removes 'nades and implements the reverse-order. It now takes 22 kills to win.
Well you seemed to win most every time anyway so you know... ;)
And then he left and I started winning most of the time.
Yeah but I can't make it so you need fences to win
Also, has anyone rented any VPS's before that would run more than one CE server for less than $25/month before? Someone I know mentioned PhotonVPS.com but they haven't personally used them before. I tried them out once when Just Cause 2 MP came out and they seemed half-decent but the server I had on there didn't take off so I cancelled the service.
Not sure if their $16/month 1 GB RAM, 1 Core, 20 GB storage space VPS would cut it for two Halo CE servers. The default maps only take up 501~ MB and the rest of the server files are like 50MB if that. Storage isn't a concern really (and I can configure the servers to share a single maps folder easy enough).
The reason I ask is because there's some other gametypes I'd like to try out, and I wouldn't mind hosting a normal server either. I feel that just buying additional gameservers.com servers would be more expensive than a single half-decent VPS.
I can set up a windows xp box in my basement and charge you $20/month to ssh to it.
I have a 42U server rack in my basement with servers in it already, no need for that haha.
The biggest factor is Internet connection consistency.
Here's a game we played last night on Wizard. At one point we had about 9 randoms on the server along with me Freelancer and Zeph. It's tons of fun with lots of people.
I like that popping text you've got. Kinda looks Halo 3 style. Is that something OS adds or is that an individual client mod you're running?
The text is.. alright. I'm using it too. It could be boldened a little bit, and the animation could be quicker. I'm hoping it's more configurable via like, lua scripts or whatever later on
what time do you guys play i want in (if the server is nolead)
How about right now?
ok
so does chat just not work anymore?
It works fine...
Also, I rented a VPS in Los Angeles for a month to see how it is. It gives me the resources to run (I think) about 2-3 servers for about the same price as the gameservers.com server I rented. Please try this server by joining either of the following two servers:
http://cache.www.gametracker.com/ser...0000_1_1_0.png http://cache.www.gametracker.com/ser...0000_1_1_0.png
You can also use the following addresses to connect the server (a little easier to remember if you're not running HAC2 and have no server bookmarking):
vpstest.halo-ce.com:2302
vpstest.halo-ce.com:2305
GUNGAME2 is running the exact same setup as the GUNGAME you have been loving. Please play on both and let me know if you think GUNGAME2 runs the same/better/worse.
I thought you just had to go into the redist folder and install msxmlenu.msi
Howcome I've never had to do that before? (for the record this is a fresh halo install on a fresh PC with no changes but the 1.10 patch)
No idea, I always have to do it.
Guys please try the new servers this weekend! I may password the gameservers.com one so you guys play on the others. I think the general concensus was that it was alright when we played a bit on 1.10 the other day.
I need to know if I can go forward with the VPS solution. It's cheaper overall, and easier to manage and setup additional administrators in the future.
Let me know if you guys want to do a custom map gamenight on there or something this weekend. I can make that happen, or appoint another administrator to make it happen (if you want to do it let me know).
I'd be down for a custom map game night. Especially with gungame.
All of my videos on youtube were made with Sony Vegas, except for this one I posted in the thread. I used Adobe Premier and After Effects for that one jsut because I happen to have the CS6 suite installed. I actually like Premier/After Effects a lot more than Vegas after using it just once.
So I found this video. Some random who joined when we played the other was actually streaming it on twitch lol
i'd noscope that nerd hard
That's awesome! :)
Glad people are enjoying it enough to record stuff like this!
Right now I'm thinking that I will be canceling the gameservers.com server and hosting on the VPS exclusively, but I'll give it until at least Monday before I make up my mind. Yes the VPS is in a less ideal location (LA instead of Chicago), but it's the same price for basically 2-3 servers there. And I can scale it up a level and get 4-6 servers for MUCH less than gameservers.com offers.
Here is a game idea:
Map: putput
Describtion:
Create cuboid areas for each room in sapps areas.txt. With the event_aenter event replace a players weapons on entry of the room with rooms specific items/weapons.
Make custom variables (e.g. var_add room1 4) for each room to keep track of which player achieved a kill in which rooms.
The game ends when a player killed at least one enemy in every single room.
The interesting part is the different rules/weapons for each room. For example in one room everyone could have camo and rockets and in another room sniper rifles or melee only or no shield or just one bar health or or or or
That's a very awesome idea!
I seem to recall being able to let SAPP load a specific configuration depending on the map and/or gametype name, so this could definitely work and even be added into the existing mapcycle. Assuming I'm right and that is actually a thing I'm remembering correctly.
Oh man that guy's IP is in his video :/
Oh well, at least he left in the bit at the end where I go ham.
The only problem I see with the putput thing is players just not going into the last room so the lead player can't get the kill he needs.
Then again, I doubt Halo PC players would do that. Xbox Live probably, but not here.
eventually you'd get 2 players on the last room and they'd have to end it (assuming that there's 3+ players)
3 of those 4 extra assists you had were the 3 kills more I yoinked from you in the last minute or so, heh.
Fun stuff!
Edit: Heads up, there may be some shuffling of IP's soon. I'm going to either cancel my gameservers account and keep the VPS, or cancel the VPS and purchase another gameservers account. I'll keep you guys posted, but one thing that will definitely happen is the removal of the second GUNGAME server.
So the end result will be BUNGIE 1.10 and BUNGIE GUNGAME remaining online, but possibly under different IPs.
Hello, I tried to look into blocking to drop a weapon, but it's not a 5 min fix as I hoped (or I was looking at the wrong place), need to understand how this thing is working exactly. I'll give it a try today again, but if i can't manage it, it won't be in the next update. :/
Alright, blocking a weapon drop would be the best. However if you could add something like event_wdrop (the opposite of event_wpickup) then I could just give players another skull/flag pole if they drop it.
This would be an intermediate fix though, blocking weapon drops would be preferable.
Update on server situation: Everything moved to VPS. Gameservers account cancelled. The primary gungame server is now:
game.halo-ce.com:2305
There goes my 30 ping
Made a simple gg_map for this. Got it set up in Sapien and all, but I've apparently missed something because it exceptions on load in game mode. It's been so long since I made one, I can't remember what I've missed. There a checklist anywhere on population for levels?
As in spawn points, team spawn points, vehicle spawn points, weapon spawns, teleporters, etc?
Mhmm.
fy_iceworld
Besides the ones I mentioned, those are all I remember. I know you need spawn points and they need to be setup for team games as well some how. It's probably been 5+ years since I had HEK installed, lol.
Ok well, I looked into this blocking weapon drop again, and looks like I can block it but it doesn't sync. So I just made an event_wdrop, it's in 8.1 which is out now.
Sweet! Thank you very much sehe!
Edit: The GUNGAME server now has this implemented. If you drop the skull or flag pole by mistake you should immediately be given a new one if everything is working right in the new event!
Try it out!
Can't wait to see how many flags I can drop before the server lags out.
I put a 2 second delay on giving people another skull/flag to reduce that... But yeah...
