Just as a disclaimer, I got that info from a book that was all about the AK from conception to modern day.

Izhevsk is and to my knowledge always has been a machine/mechanical works, hence the abbreviated IZHMASH versus TOZ (Tulskiy Oruzheyny Zavod, Tula Ordnance Factory [my spelling is probably wrong phonetically but you get the picture])

Pre-1928 Izhevsk rifles are marked Izhevsk Ordnance Factory.
Ah I see now.
Also were are more of those glorious pictures of the mosin nagant you promised.
HAS BEEN UNEXPECTED DELAY. PHOTOS GET PUT ON WRONG TRAIN, GO TO KAZAKHSTAN. MAYBE PHOTOS ARRIVE END OF NEXT WEEK.
(photos are on the other camera which i don't have)
*slams table* SHOW ME YOUR GUN. END OF WEEK TOO LONG.
I want to get an MN so old that the rear sight is measured in arshins rather than meters...
WITH BAYONET ATTACH, RIFLE IS TALLER THAN FATHER. ALMOST AS TALL AS ME.
Put a PEQ-14 on it.
Fix swords!
PEQ-14 on mosin, lulz. speaking of bayonets

I love the mosin bayonet, always seems to make me in the mood for shish kabob, I'm sure though the pumpkins didn't apperciate them after halloween.
Since we are on mosins/bayonets check this out.

The guy uses a Mosin-Nagant, yes thats right he used a MN in a robbery. Urgh and I thought I'd never seen one used in a robbery because the regular length mosins I thought would be unsuitable except for the 1907, M38, and M44 but even then I didn't think any MN would get used in a robbery.
Good thing I am going the GR gun show in 3 weeks and 3 days here in MI, gotta by them milsurps by the crates. But no seriously the only guns I'm considering right now is some other type of Mosin Nagant or a SKS, perfably a Russian one. No Yugo or Chinese-export american market crap, any other varient of SKS's will be fine for a decent price since I don't have a ton of money to spare. I remember running into a Albanian SKS back in October, I really wish I got it but I didn't.
Never seen an Albanian. Everyone says the Russian ones are the best, but I have no problem with a nice Yugo. Be sure to inspect before you buy!!!
Yeah the polished look is way cooler.
Did that motherfucker saw the butt off? That's gonna hurt.
Put a MOE kit on it.
MOE ftw. Seriously, if anyone pointed a mosin at me I'd be like fuck it, take what you want. I'd take a 9mm, 5.56, maybe even a .45 but FUCK that thing
Only if it's M193. M855 (SS109) doesn't really shred, which is a criticism that's been levied against it more than once.
Apart from that, the higher power of the 7.62x54R will do much worse things to you than a 5.56 if it clips you instead of a direct hit. Terrible, terrible things. Like splitting your entire body open (like an axe hitting wood) and letting stuff fall out. I take it you've seen the ballistic gel results, no?
Most available 5.56 ammo is 55 grain or M193. Also lots of SP ammo rolling around in the US.
Trust me, being hit by the Mosin would be far, far, far worse.
So would taking an arrow to the knee.
there is no amount of facepalm.
Also yeah 5.56 can be pretty fucking deadly given that upon contact all of its energy is then transferred from the round into your organs as well as shrapnel. Where as most rounds that do a through and through can sometimes do less damage since the energy is transferred directly through and can do minimal damage to the body. The 7.62x54r doesn't usually do a clean through and through shot. The bullet itself for one is massive, usually weighing around 148gr to 160gr (5.56 is usually 55gr or 62gr), the cartridge as a whole is huge. And when it hits it blows shit apart, especially people.
They're both pretty terrifying. Actually, any standard issue rifle round from WW2 is fucking nasty. 7.92x57, the shit is that?! With some bullet weights being over 200gr
Commercial ammo for the 7.62x54r can have 180gr and 200gr bullets, never seen anything higher. Also have you ever seen a 7.62x54r FMJ round wreck a deer or any other animal? It fucks their shit up. I have seen HP 7.62x54r, made me think how cruel it would be to shoot something with it.
On another note I want one of those American Mosin Nagants from Remington or New England Westinghouse (NEW) in a good condition but that will be a tough one to find.
E: Remember the difference between the 7.62x54r and 30-06? It's easy to point out why it is superior, another reason why Bannerman took Remington and NEW rifles and did conversions on them to accept 30-06 back in the 1920's I think it was then.
I'm saying that the ammo designed to shoot animals does more damage than FMJ. Always.
Always does. There is literally no argument against that.
Anything with a soft- or hollow-point will. That's the point (lol). Bigger bullet diameter = more energy transfer. It also usually means a worse ballistic coefficient (mitigated by increasing length+changing the overall shape). A soft or hollow point allows you to increase diameter without actually increasing the diameter, therefore preserving the round's coefficient for the most part.
Bullets designed to shoot animals draw from bullets that were designed to shoot people, first. :p
What? I think he just meant bullets designed for hunting were the product of a design that was meant to kill people fast and effectively haha
.950 JD HP, accept no substitute.
But seriously, wheres those mosin pics ross, Ivan isn't pleased
YOU LISTEN HERE, CAPITALIST SWINE. PICTURES ARE ON CAMERA WHICH IS MANY THOUSAND OF ARSHIN AWAY. I AM GO TO FARM TO SHOOT GLORIOUS RIFLE OF FASCIST DEFEAT AND PROBABLY ALSO BRITISH RIFLE OF LEE ENFIELD TYPE. THIS HAPPEN IN A FEW DAYS OR MAYBE A WEEK, BECAUSE FRIEND IS ALSO PLANNING ON COME TO FARM AND I GET RIDE WITH HIM. TRAIN IS FULL OF CONVICT AND DISEASE, I WAIT FOR RIDE.
heard good things about those, a couple tfr posters have them
Look at all that plastic lol. BRING BACK WOOD!!!
There's no plastic on the XCR. It's all metal except for the pistol grip, cheek rest, and butt pad.
which you must replace with wood :haw:
Wood butt-pad, good idea!!
:like:
And since your Arshins away from posting photoo's of Ivans work, I had to substitute by taking my own photo's to help ease Ivans soul.
Also doesn't Denatured Alcohol help thin Shellac out and spread it around slightly, because I was told it does thin Shellac out since I wanna fix the flaking Shellac on mine.
YOU TAKE VERY GOOD PHOTO. IMPRESSES ME. PLEASE TELL ME SECRETS, I AM NOT GOOD WITH CAMERA.
AS FOR SERVICE RIFLE OF GLORIOUS CRUSHING DESTRUCTION OF NAZI INVADER, HERE IS GUIDE TO CLEAN AND RESTORE. I HOPE YOU FIND HELPFUL. REMEMBER TO TEST IDEA ON SMALL UNIMPORTANT PART BEFORE DO TO WHOLE RIFLE, FOR TO AVOID FUCKING UP EVERYTHING.
ADDITIONAL, WHAT YEAR IS YOUR RIFLE? I SEE IZHEVSK MARKING. DOES RIFLE HAVE ALL SAME SERIAL NUMBER?
I just took a bunch of pictures with my very good camera at a certain time of day when the sun is just past noon. I took not too many to find the one I liked the most. 1943, the common year. The only reason why I bought a 2nd one is because of the stock and how nice the metal looked, looked like it was machined during peace-time not wartime. The magazine looks unrefurbed, some blueing is left but once in sun light its almost pure white. And no my rifle is not all matching, it was force matched by electro penciling in which before I bought it my friend polished the bolt and the electro-penciled number was gone. Thanks for the guide to cleaning my rifle comrade.
Also my first MN I left with my grandfather since he might have hung it up somewhere but he didn't, he said when I come back I should bring it with me so I'm hoping sometime in April I shall be getting it, now that is all matching if my mind tells me right.
Thanks for the guide Ross, that was very helpful!
here's your wood SCAR
http://i.imgur.com/TECB9.jpg
LMAO. Shit would break so fast.
Only because the design is made with thin walls and an internal metal frame in mind, not because wood is inherently fragile.
That's what I was getting at.
Only wood peices you could use on a real SCAR would be the stock, pistol grip, and possibly the lower receiver (unlikely). If you wanted you could replace the frount-set that holds the barrel and gas system together with wood but it wouldn't hold up as long as metal due to heat issues in those areas. So that would include the side and botton rails, as well as the silver portion in front of the receivers that you can see in my sig.
Now, the AR, on the other hand, can easily use wood versions of its plastic furniture. Actually, the whole gun can be manufactured by small shops in third-world countries if necessary, unlike its Kalashnikov adversary.
Milled vs. stamped, ftw.
Many AKs of the milled variety are made on the Khyber Pass every year, and are mostly fairly functional.
I know the AK-47 Types II and III were milled. Type I was stamped, but it was not good stamping (very heavy).
The wood on that thing is absolutely gorgeous.
DO WANT
I've kind of stalled on a project to build an airsoft version of that gun. I have some real-steel AK furniture, from the factory in Poland. It was part of the last stock before it shut down.
:realsmug:
I have yet to buy the G&G RK-47 to put it on, and now I'm not sure if I should do that or if I should put it on a real AK. The problem with the latter is that there are no good milled receivers to use in the USA if I do an AK-47 project. They all put these crappy logos on them.
Don't forget the SVT40's! I really want one but the price is ehhhh.
One of the things Canadians can rejoice over, them being able to have cheap SVT's, but get pinned to 5 shot magazines.
They have cheap SVTs :o
Yeah they're not bad.
I think SVT-40's are still cheaper than Russian AK-47's. To find an original Russian AK, milled or stamped is damn hard enough. Last Original AK I found went for like $3,000. You can find, American, Romanian, and other Slavic country Ak's for cheap but that's no fun. Izhmash now imports modern Russian AK patterned rifles, including the 74m through Arsenal inc. for a fair price. I guess it's better than nothing, but still can only be ordered in polymer furniture.
http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct1068.aspx
oho oho (supposed to be a Gregorian chant)
E: took a second look and that wasn't the product I was trying to show.
http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct655.aspx
There you go.
E2: Nope thats a scam too. Damn you Penguin and being right!
i didnt like that red wood look at first glance, but now im finding myself oddly entranced by it.
74Ms only look right with polymer, while 47s, 74Us and the older-pattern 74s only look right with wood.
Dream combo - AK-74M with 1P29. I want it so badly. Other white whale: a side-mount PEM 91/30 (not repro). SashaVedernikov on YT (cool dude who posts tons of stuff on Red Army snipers and recolours some amazing WWII photos, got me back into doing so myself) says he knows the serial of Zaitsev's original rifle from before he was wounded - the one he used in Stalingrad - but the odds on that one are a bit long I think :v:
74M's only come in polymer. AK-74 proper comes in wood and plum polyamide, as does the AKS-74. Legit '74s in wood look absolutely stunning.
Also, an SVT-40 is ~$900 here in the States. I wouldn't call that steep, really.
My "white whale" gun would have to be a .303 Lee-Enfield Mk. V transition rifle. It looks almost the same as the Mk. III*, but it has a single-piece top and it uses aperture sights instead of the traditional v-notch sight. I hate the No. 4's looks, I do not want one of those.
Other hard-to-obtain desirable would be a Winchester M1894 Legacy rifle; it's a full-length, full-stocked lever action with a semi-pistol grip on the stock (rather than the typical straight grip). I want the one in .50-90, but I'll take any caliber.
That's not bad at all considering I'm definitely going to pickup one of those RobArms XCR-M's in .308 if/when I get into the Reserves or get a job again.
He had a PEM on the side mount in Stalingrad, like Chekhov and most of the other snipers there. The top mount was more common but for some reason they returned to the side mount for a while before switching over to the PU. Zaitsev was wounded by shrapnel from a mine and had to have his vision restored, when he returned to service he was presented with a PU with a hero plate on the butt.
They are $280 in Canada. I wouldn't call 900 steep either; I'd call it fucking extortionate. Your government is fucking stupid and makes dumb laws. On the same topic, things are like that here but for any gun, so consider yourself lucky.
Speaking of which, I had a good chuckle earlier - a friend told me the guys I got my Mosin from have some 'snipers' in stock. To their credit the inverted commas are theirs, not mine, and they clearly state that the scopes and mounts are reproductions and the other work was done by gunsmiths. The rifles are not ex-snipers but very good condition Izhevsk infantry rifles, but they are asking a lot.
Like, $1,150 kind of a lot. My ex-sniper, absolutely mint, was $575, a PU scope from the same year with its mount was $400 including postage, and the rest of the work will probably bring me close to the same price - for a WWII scope on a legitimate sniper rifle. Jesus Christ Australia is a shitty place to live if you enjoy shooting, and even worse if you're into milsurp or rare items.
I can't recall for sure, but I believe I've seen original sniper rifles - as in, those left in their WWII state and not converted like mine - fetch $2,500 here. They're what, $150-250 in the US based on rarity and condition? Fucking disgusting.
e/ One last addition to this post - if any of you get an ex-sniper Mosin or SVT and intend to convert it to its proper form, don't bother with a reproduction scope. The cheap ones are shit, the good ones will run you north of $250 US, and an average wartime-production PU in still very much serviceable condition will seldom go for more than $400 US unless it is a rare variant, and that includes the mount. PE and PEM scopes and mounts are another matter entirely, though, and originals are much harder to find than the ubiquitous PU.
Probably not the best idea to post that on a public domain :ssh:
Also call me a bitch but breaking the law, even a fucking stupid law that makes no logical sense, is still not a good thing and you should probably not do it, least of all because it just reinforces the stereotype of shooters not caring and doing illegal shit and THE BLACK MARKET
No but think of all the weird stuff the Canadian Boarder Security Agency will do to you!!
$280 for a SVT-40? Where can I get one?
i want a tommy gun. anybody wanna make an illegal gun run to my house? looking at you tyrant
SVTs are selling for 320 on there.
I hate my government so damn much.
join a mexican drug cartel, the batfe will supply you real good
this is literally a thing by the way, the atf have been illegally supplying weapons to mexican cartels and so far said weapons have killed a us border patrol officer and a shit ton of mexicans. how's that for gun control
Actually, thats not the story I read when it came out at all.
What I had read was about American citizens who are Hispanic buying loads of semi-automatic AK style guns and bringing them across the border to sell to the cartels. Thats a border patrol problem, not an ATF problem. And yes, it has been a disaster.
Don't forget the Russian SKS's, I wish the prices were like then in the 90's so I wouldn't have to pay 350 up to 450ish, I'm uninterested in paying for a RU SKS above 430 but if it's one I'm solely after I'll take it, that is not after negotiations first and a good inspection.
And a gun show in GR is coming up in 2 weeks, I'm interested to see the new place they got that they say is supposedly a ton bigger then the last so I can go hunting for something for 3 hours.
I'd prefer a Russian SKS, but I know I can't afford one. Howeverm what about the Type-56 from China? Marstar has it for some too good to be true price. It there any chance that this thing will blow up in my face if I was to use it?:
http://www.marstar.ca/main/images/$75-SkS.jpg
Marstar is like Norinco LMAO.
