I wouldn't use one on an SKS on principle. If you want an AK, buy a fucking AK. If you can't buy an AK, go somewhere you can.
High capacity make all guns more fun, it has nothing to do with pretending to be another gun. If you think that, you're thinking to hard about your guns IMO.

What's your guys' opinion on this? http://henryrepeating.com/rifle-survival-ar7.cfm

I'm thinking of buying a rifle, have around 300 or more depending on if my car sells for the right price. That looked like it would be good for taking camping.

The stock is lot bigger in person. It's really weird looking. You really can't beat the capacity in a pack-sized rifle when your other choice is a single shot Cricket.

Bought a couple Ruger p95's several weeks ago and had FTE's every single round. It took 300 rounds, storing it slide locked (heavy ass retained double springs), and some oil and now it cycles single-handed even with shitty Blazer practice ammo. Now if I could just find some small pistol primers...

Was at The Nation's Gun Show this weekend, helping a couple of my firearms-illiterate friends shop. Buddy picked up a nice Finish M39 Mosin-Nagant for $250, including 100 rounds of 7.62x54R in the deal. I must say, I like the Finish version better, the stock is beefier and looks better. His fiancée picked up a Walther PK380, after I showed it to her. I will probably get one myself at some point, that thing is one of the most comfortable handguns to grip ever made.

A mosin is a pretty good choice. The ammo is cheap, the action and sights are simple, and the rifles are cheap too. You can expect accuracy to be inconsistent between rifles. I've seen rifles that were real dogs, and some that shot excellently. It really depends on the gun.
I wouldn't hunt with it. The hunting ammo selection for them sucks, and the rifle is long/cumbersome/heavy to pack into the field for long periods of time.

If you want to buy from a store, I suggest looking around for local gun stores and going inside.

If you want to buy online, I suggest going to AIMsurplus (http://www.aimsurplus.com/). They sell them for a very good price, they'll help you with an FFL transfer, and I've only heard great things about the quality of the rifles they sell.
If you buy from there, I also suggest ordering a pair of the ammo spam cans they sell. That'll be about $220 bucks or so after shipping. If you buy one, it doesn't come with the can opener, which are hard to find on their own.

If you decide to pull the trigger on this, then have fun :)

Yeah my next paycheck i'll most likely get one.

One thing though, since I live in Arizona, are there any restrictions on one of these things? Like what is an FFL transfer, can I just buy one online, etc?

TVTyrant

FFL Transfers:
An FFL transfer is when you purchase a gun online. Because of the Kennedy assassination, laws were made in the US that make it so guns cannot be shipped right to your door (except under special circumstances, which I won't get in to). As a result, what you must do is find a person or company that has an FFL (which is an abbreviation of Federal Firearms License) and have the gun shipped there. You then pay that person a small fee to have the gun transferred into your possession.

Arizona gun laws:
To my knowledge, Arizone is probably the most laxed state when it comes to gun laws. I've never heard of them instituting any kind of special gun laws or restriction, and they usually support every kind of freedom there you could imagine.

Ammo can be shipped to your door as long as you are 21. You'll want to stay home from school or work the day that it's going to arrive though, because if you're not there they will not be helpful with you about receiving your package.

Went to Cabellas today to check them out. They had both the regular and carbine models. They had the bolt locked though on the regular ones, but the carbine ones were unlocked.

Most of the ones they had there were pretty beaten and bashed up, and yet they were all $170 :| I did like the feel of them a lot though. Just wish I could purchase one for $100 somewhere :( Because then i'd just buy it now.

Because they are cheap, reliable, and accurate; that's why. Personally, though, I don't have one. I'd like to get one purely because they are cheap to buy and cheap to shoot, but there are many other guns I find more desirable. The German Gew.88 Commission rifle, a Arisaka Type 44, MAS-36, the Norvegian Krag-Jorgensen...all really awesome and I want one of each. I'm also a whore for reproduction black powder, percussion cap...these technically don't even classify as firearms under US law.

Assault rifles/civilian versions of them are for pussies.

But in all seriousness they are great for casual shooting. They're cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, and easy to maintain. For someone who's starting out collecting they're a great first gun that come with a historic value at an affordable price. Personally I'm not big on the whole owning 3 of the same gun, although there are several variations to the Mosin which are worth collecting and some are more rare than others.

Wow really? That's actually WORSE than in Canada!

In Canada, after you pay your firearms license fee and/or take the course (costs more but includes the license fee + you get some decent firearms training) then all you need to do to buy online is buy it. You buy the rifle, if it's non-restricted there are no extra licensing/registration costs and they just ship it to you like any other parcel.

I'm fairly confident that Restricted firearms can be sent the same way, but you pay a licensing fee. Prohibited firearms can't be sent by mail since you can't buy them or legally own them 99% of the time anyway.

The difference is you guys have to take a course/own a license to own a firearm. We have no safety net of any sort, so we have to deal with this FFL bullshit because the righties can't get their shit together.

Next thursday is my paycheck! I found an FFL near me that will do a transfer for $20. I'm actually thinking about getting either the M44 or Type 53. I'm not a big person so those fit perfectly in my hand. When I held the 91/30 that thing was huge on me.

Also, will you guys hate me if I put on a red dot? My shooting eye is my not so good eye (can't get 20/20 vision even with glasses, had lazy eye as child), so I think that a red dot would be easier for me to see.

If you're going for targets at 150m to 200m+ you will have just as hard of a time seeing as you would with iron sights most likely given that your vision sucks. Not to mention if your red dot isn't very sensitive in how dim or bright it gets when changing the intensity, you probably wouldn't even be able to see your target.

I've got a similar situation to you, but it's my left eye that sucks. Thankfully I shoot right handed, but sometimes I have to use my left eye to shoot (shooting with NODS on when doing night fires with a PEQ-15, they go over your non shooting eye). My m68 CCO is good as far as dot intensity goes, lots of steps in between fully bright and all the way off.

PenGuin1362

Like rooster said, red dot won't help you at range, personally not a fan of them as they tend to be more fuzzy unless you drop some cash on a decent model that gives a little more crisp reticle. That doesn't bother some people but I prefer the irons.

ThePlague
June 30th, 2013, 10:47 PM
I was thinking red dot because of the pointability (is that a word?), accompanied with the M44/type 53 carbine style smallness. I will try out the irons when I first get it though. Are there any good sights other then sniper scopes for mid/shorter ranges? I doubt i'll be using the thing from too far away.

Unless you're firing more than 200m then you won't need a scope, unless you just want it for cool points or something, or you're trying to get a really tight grouping. Basically, it's just really unnecessary unless you feel like blowing your money.

Recoil pad? Seriously? I'm the same size and build as the average woman and I don't even use one. It's not like this is a .460 Weatherby Magnum...

Cartidge carrier is nice, but I'm not sure how much use you'll get out of it if you plan on loading your magazine all the way.

I think you ought to try the rifle out without the scope before you spend on the scope and accessories.

I also have lazy eye. 20/200 with the right eye, except the fuckers at the optometrist never even tried to patch my left eye to strengthen the right; just fixed me up with a contact lens ("20/40" if I wear it...I don't) at age 12 and called it a day. I shoot with my left now. You need to shoot with your good eye, plain and simple. You match the weapon to your eye, not to your preferred hand.

From what i've read I heard the recoil was pretty rough, that's why I posted that. Only gun i've shot before was a 22 so in terms of recoil I have no idea.

Cartidge carrier is nice, but I'm not sure how much use you'll get out of it if you plan on loading your magazine all the way.I was mainly getting that for the cool factor. I figured it'd be a nice addition for collection or something.

So you're saying I should try out shooting with my left hand and whatnot instead of my right? When I go to the shooting range i'll give it a go. I've always shot BB guns and whatnot with both eyes open. And with pistols I usually maneuvered the sights to match up with my left eye anyhow.

Thanks for all the info.

Exam I do what I want.

It's going to feel weird at first, shooting with your off-hand. But then, you get used to it and then you find that you can shoot with either hand with the only limitation being your vision. For giggles I sometimes shoot with my right eye and hand to see how good of a grouping I can get, but if I'm actually trying I always use the left.

But really, the red-dot isn't going to help your bad eye at all. The only thing it will achieve is obscuring the target with a red dot, making shot-placement just as much guess-work as it would be using the irons. If you were trying to hit a man-size target with no particular level of precision, sure. But target shooting? No, pointless gesture.

Gun sling in black (because black is cooler then green)

(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CP1ZUNE/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)Once I get the rifle i'll pick up all the cleaning supplies and whatnot to get the cosmoline shit off. I am pretty sure the gun won't come with a cleaning rod, but will check once it gets here. Some people said they got one, others did not, so i'll hold off on purchasing those.

I also need to get myself a carrying case, but the ones they have on Amazon that work with Amazon Prime are sold out atm.

Good buys? Should I buy oil or whatever now?

Oh man the things I missed.

The recoil pad..it doesn't help with the recoil at all really. The things it does is add 1 inch in length and not get your shoulder hit by metal/wood. I used to think shootin with the recoil pad was better but eventually the mosin buttplate stopped bothering my shoulder. Seriously just dont loosly hold the rifle to your shoulder unless you want your shoulder to get hit hard when firing. How tall are you again plague? Also which mosin did you get.

The allen cartridge holder is aight, let me know how it works and I may buy one.

The ncstar leather dog collars MAY be really thin..just going to warn you on that.

And a carry case? What are you looking for..a hard case or soft? Theres plenty of options even with the Prime.

ThePlague

What I heard about the recoil pad is it did help a lot, after you drilled out some of those holes completely. I purchased the Type 53 M44 clone, all the 91/30's and whatnot were out of stock, and the Type 53 I messed with seemed to fit me right. I'm only 5'5", so a full length Mosin seemed weird.

The strap and cartridge are coming in today, so i'll let you know how those things are. The Mosin won't reach the FFL till Wednesday, so i'll pick that up the. Of course i'll make sure to examine the shit out of it first, incase anything looks messed up. Then cleaning and whatnot will commence!

If it's a dime-a-dozen rifle and it's not being sporterized, I don't honestly care one way or another. It's a Chinese, round receiver Mosin. It's nothing special (actually, most Mosins are nothing special...that's why we like them).

It will make it look like it is supposed to, like an M44.
That's a bit of a slippery slope, though. For instance, anyone who has two eyes to see with can tell you that the shellac finish on Soviet Mosins is not original. It was done postwar. The wartime finish was oil, like everywhere else. Despite this, it is generally frowned upon to strip the stock and oil it, and it generally devalues the rifle (to whatever extent you can devalue a Mosin without bringing Tapco into the equation). It also causes consternation when someone later down the line tries to sell it as !!!RARE ORIGINAL OIL FINISH!!!, because a few such examples do exist and trying to figure out which is which can be a headache.

'Sides, the sunscorched fencepost look has a certain charm to it.

So I have acquired a red dot sight. I put it on an airsoft gun, but this thing is full metal and meant for actual firearms. I've got to say, I don't know why anybody would ever use anything else. The way it works is there's a laser in the back of the unit that reflects off of the glass you look through. Due to this reflective nature, the dot always shows where the bullet will go (assuming you've got the dot zeroed in of course). You don't even need to hold the gun straight. The bullet will hit whatever the dot is on. This shit is straight up cheating.

rossmum
July 21st, 2013, 08:48 PM
Yes, it is the latest evolution of what was once refered to as a collimated gunsight. They have existed since the end of the 19th century and been in common military usage on aircraft since 1917. Really the only big difference between that an a WWI Oigee reflector sight is that it uses a laser instead of a small incandescent lamp, and also the degree of miniaturisation.

The next step up is the gyroscopic reflector gunsight, which also computes lead based on the motion of the thing the sight is mounted on and a range to target input. 1941 technology.

Guys guess what.

I got a 1953 Izhevsk SKS (they only made it for two years)..its a refurb but the guy had no idea what he had. Ahhh I got lucky. And the bummer was I sold the m1 (as I couldn't part with any of my other rifles) for money (lol poor college student). I got $900 out of the m1 and I found the sks and im aw shit. The guy sold me the rifle, 200 rounds of russian HP, 30 rd duckbill mag for a wooping $600.

I really didn't want to sell the m1 but bills needed to be paid. I also sold some other misc stuff like some ammo and a extra mosin stock I had laying around.

I tried the boiling water thing, it was a mess and overall a pain in the ass. Biggest thing was the water didn't stay hot enough, long enough, for me to clean everything off. Went into the garage, got some WD-40, sprayed it on and it whipped clean off. The thicker globs just dripped off. Got the idea from several other gun boards. Technically WD-40 is also a rust preventative but wouldn't hurt to give the whole rifle a good cleaning after you get the cosmoline off and coat it in a light treatment of oil.

TVTyrant
December 6th, 2013, 03:50 AM
What's the theory as far as the wood goes? I've heard all kinds of things, and decided to use mineral spirits after all things were considered.

TVTyrant
December 9th, 2013, 07:10 PM
Took the cosmoline off, then played hooky from studying to drive up to the mountains and fire it.

Used WD-40 (thanks Penguin!) on all the exterior metals, and used carburetor cleaner to remove the cosmoline from the bore. Just rubbed some mineral spirits along the wood to try and get it off that, which worked but not to the dramatic effect I was hoping. Dipped all the small bits in a boiling pot of water as well and that got some more out,

Thing shot very very straight at about 50 yards. If I'd been using good technique, I could have probably shot two inches, but I wasn't caring about grouping and was just shooting an 8x18 inch box. Hit every time as long as I did my part. Had some cosmoline bleeding out of the wood and the bolt after a while, which I wiped off carefully and continued usage. Only problem was a bit of sticky bolt (wouldn't close at times), and a few failures to cock (happened twice in twenty rounds).

Only got to shoot twenty rounds because I accidentally grabbed my GI can of shot shells instead of the one I am storing my 7.62R ammo in, but 20 was enough. Cleaned the bore after shooting and put it in a case. Great gun, and I can't wait to shoot it some more.

I've had mine for almost 6 years, and was scrubbed clean when I got it. On super hot days after a handful of rounds my stock starts to ooze too. Just small drops but it happens.

I think I'm going to sell the Rob Arms XCR-M for a Remington 700 XCR Long Range Tactical in .308. Then I'll probably bed the stock. I want a nice, modern long range .308 to play with. I'm a fan, because typically the heavier profile barrel reduces vibrations and felt recoil, and the stocks are a lot lighter weight than wood (being fiberglass or some sort of combined polymer). The threaded barrels are great for compensators like this too. This thing has almost no felt recoil, it's like shooting a .223 / 5.56.

But yeah, this is a fairly "classic" kind of tactical bolt action. Without a fancy modern age stock that weighs 20 lbs. I have some videos of me shooting all this stuff, only one ready to show is this though:

It's a Ruger 9E, the budget version of their SR9. The trigger is smooth and the ergonomics are nearly perfect for my thin twink fingers. It's a bit heavier than the S&W SD9VE I was also looking at back when buying, but after running both on my first range day, I definitely prefer the Ruger. For the $100 I saved, I picked up a pelican case to transport it in, the extra two mags, and mag loader. I'm planning to eventually CC with it given how thin it is for a full size, I'm just looking for a good holster for daily carry.
